Global prices of pulses have gone up by about 30 per cent to 40 per cent
during last two to three months due to fear of drought in India, the largest
importer and consumer of the vegetarian source of protein. With Union
government's announcement to import pulses, international prices are
expected to move up drastically.Pulses prices have increased by 50 per cent
to 60 per cent in last one year and there is uncertainty about domestic
production in 2015 due to threat of deficient monsoon. Chana prices in the
forward trade in Australia have increased from $ 550/tonne in March to
$775/tonne in June. Similarly, prices of moong, tur, urad have increased by
30 per cent to 40 per cent in Myanmar and other supplying countries.
Canada, the biggest grower of yellow peas too has increased area under the
crop substantially. Indian importers have signed contracts for record
imports of yellow peas and lentils from Canada. With Indian government's
announcement that it will import pulses to control domestic prices, trading
community thinks that the international prices can move up further.
"Government's announcement to import will create chaos. The prices will
go up further," said an industry source.
With an aim to generate artificial rainfall in dry parts of the state,
Maharashtra Government is mulling to use cloud seeding technology. In
this technology, a rocket propelled by sugar is fired at the clouds to
generate rains.State relief and rehabilitation minister Eknath Khadse said
they have been approached by specialists in the field of cloud seeding who
claim to generate rainfall using sugar propelled rockets.Director of
International School of Professional Studies (ISPS) Trustee Abdul Rehman
Vanoo, who recently gave a presentation to Khadse, said the rocket
technology has been tested in areas like Sindhudurg and Sangli, and can hit
target in a range of 45 kms from the ground.
 Gujarat and Rajasthan. As per Government data, 2.41 lakh hectare of
cumin crop is damaged in Rajasthan. As per third advance estimate of
Gujarat State, production is expected at 1.58 lakh tonnes in 2014-15
which is 54.3 per cent lower compared to last years’ production of 3.46
lakh tonnes.According to Gujarat government data released on 19th Jan
15, Jeera recorded 2.64 lakh hac, 42% less sowing compared to last
year’s 4.54 lakh hac. Jeera (cumin) exports have been 128,500 tonnes in
the first nine months (Apr-Dec) of 2014-15, a rise of 28% from the
corresponding period of the previous (Source: Spices Board).
There is a huge carryover stock in domestic market for the medium
quality turmeric. Sowing of Turmeric in AP for the 2014-15 season is
reported at 0.13 lakh ha, as against 0.1 lakh ha last year. The area in
Telangana stood at 0.446 lakh ha against 0.431 lakh ha last year. As per
Spice board of India, the export target for the 2014-15 is 80,000
tonnes.Exports in turmeric have increased by 8% to 65,000 tonnes
during Apr-Dec 2014 as compared to last year. At Duggirala market in
Guntur estimated market supply was at 1036 quintals, higher by 1035
quintals from previous day’s arrivals. At Erode market sources reported
arrivals at 6000 quintals, up by 2000 quintals from previous trading day.
India has exported 4505 tons of guar gum in the first week of June
which is 6% higher compared to prior week. Notably, Guar products
export in May decline sharply by 40% compared to last year same period
due to weak demand from overseas.According to recent Baker's and
Hughes report on US crude oil rig count, it decline to 894 rigs compared
to 1536 oil rigs running last year at same period.Recently, OPEC
countries in a meeting says they will kept their crude oil production
intact which will pressurize crude oil prices in the medium term.

SUGAR PRICES AT KEY SPOT MARKET
National Market Update
The Indian government approved Rs 6,000-crore interest-free loan to sugar mills to
help them partly clear cane price arrears to farmers that have touched about Rs 21,000
crore. The decision, which will cost the exchequer about Rs 600 crore, was taken in a
meeting of the Cabinet.The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA)
announced interest free loan worth Rs 6000 crore to the Indian sugar millers who had
accrued pending cane arrears to the local farmers in the country.
India’s sugar export rose 7% from 35.5 thousand tons to 37.9 thousand tons for the
week ending 07th Jun, 2015, whereas the country imports rose to 53.7 thousand tons
during the same interval.
India had produced 279.6 lakh tons of sugar in current session, 2014-15 (1st Oct,
2014 – 31st May, 2015) which was 16.25% higher than the production made last year
during the same interval. A record sugar production of 104.75 lakh tons had been
made by Maharashtra this year (1st Oct, 2014 – 31st May, 2015) followed by U.P
which produced 70.9 lakh tons of sugar during the same period.
The third largest sugar producer, Karnataka had produced about 48.99 lakh tons of
sugar this year in 2014-15 (till 31st May, 2015). Sugar production declined by 15.3%
in Tamil Nadu which produced 10 lakh tons of sugar till 31st May, 2015 relative to a
production of 11.8 lakh tons last year
As per the UNICA report, Brazil’s Centre south region had churned around 40.1
MT of sugarcane in the second half of May, 2015 to produce 1.97 MT of sugar during
the same period. While, an y-o-y comparison shows that the region had crushed 38
MT of sugarcane last year to produce 2.02 MT of sugar in the corresponding period.
