Machine Data Is EVERYWHERE: Use It for TestingTechWell
As more applications are hosted on servers, they produce immense quantities of logging data. Quality engineers should verify that apps are producing log data that is existent, correct, consumable, and complete. Otherwise, apps in production are not easily monitored, have issues that are difficult to detect, and cannot be corrected quickly. Tom Chavez presents the four steps that quality engineers should include in every test plan for apps that produce log output or other machine data. First, test that the data is being created. Second, ensure that the entries are correctly formatted and complete. Third, make sure the data can be consumed by your company’s log analysis tools. And fourth, verify that the app will create all possible log entries from the test data that is supplied. Join Tom as he presents demos including free tools. Learn the steps you need to include in your test plans so your team’s apps not only function but also can be monitored and understood from their machine data when running in production.

Coding Secure Infrastructure in the Cloud using the PIE frameworkJames Wickett
At National Instruments, we have developed an automation and provisioning framework called PIE (Programmable Infrastructure Environment) that we use daily on our devops team. Similar tools are available such as chef or puppet, but what makes PIE unique is its ability to work in multi-cloud deployments (Azure and AWS) along with multiple node OS types (linux and windows). It uses zookeeper to keep state and track dependencies across nodes and services.
When building PIE we actively considered how to implement it in a Rugged way for a DevOps team. As noted in the deck on slide 68, we are Rugged by Design and Devops by Culture. We see these as intersecting domains that have the ability to impact each other. For more info see ruggeddevops.org
IT forensic is an investigatory approach used to find evidence, the extent of loss, and culprits when an information security breach occurs. It allows examiners to acquire data from various devices, uncover potential evidence through disk-level analysis, and create comprehensive reports while maintaining evidence integrity. A recent study found that over 93% of information is now digital and 85% of criminal, civil, and corporate violations involve digital intrusion. IT forensic can be used to investigate internal issues like USB drives or networks, as well as external issues like websites, email, or instant messaging. The computer forensic process involves planning, acquiring evidence, extracting data, analyzing the data, and reporting findings.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
