CONCEPT OF ENVIRONMENT
MANAGEMENT
 It is the process by which environmental
health is regulated.
 Environmental management involves the
wise use of activities and resources to
impact the world.
 Environmental management is a
systematic approach to finding practical
ways for saving water, energy and
materials and reducing negative
environmental impacts
FEATURES OF EM
 Variety of management practices
 Sustainable development
 Paradigms of development
 Policy making and planning
 Environmental range from local to global
 Identify and address problems
simultaneously.
Four Phases of Environmental management
Recognition and
definition of
environmental
problems
Formulation of
environmental
policies
Implementation
of environmental
policies
Monitoring of
outcomes
Aspects of Environmental
management (OBJECTIVES)
 Identify environmental problems and its
solution
 Restrict and regulate the exploitation and
utilisation of natural resources
 Renew natural resources
 Control environmental pollution
 Optimum utilisation of resources
 Review and revise existing technology
 Formulate environmental laws
Five Fundamental Aspects
 Environmental perception and public
awareness
 Environmental education and training
 Resources management
 Control of environmental degradation and
pollution
 Environmental impact assessment
ENVIRONMENT EDUCATION/
STUDIES
Environmental studies is defined as “the
academic field which systematically
studies human interaction with the
environment. It is a broad
interdisciplinary field of study that
includes the natural environment, built
environment and the sets of relationships

CASE STUDY
A baby experienced a life-threatening rash &
asthma that her parents connected to lawn
pesticide application. Another baby in the
community had a life-threatening rash after
her apartment was sprayed for a bug
infestation. The parents, families, and
children came together and advocated to the
City Council to approve the Pesticide By-Law
that would ban the use of pesticides on lawns
and in garden care, and Halifax became the
first city to have such a ban.
