It is my great privilege to present the 2013 Momentum for Change Lighthouse Activities! These 17 activities are shining examples of climate action around the world. They demonstrate what happens when innovation and passion come together to address the biggest challenge of our time.
This year’s activities touch on three focus areas:
Women for Results: recognizing the critical leadership and participation of women in addressing climate change. This focus area is implemented with the generous support of The Rockefeller Foundation.
Urban Poor: recognizing climate action that improves the lives of impoverished people in urban communities. This focus area is implemented with the generous support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Financing for Climate Friendly Investment: recognizing successful and innovative climate-smart activities. This focus area is implemented in partnership with the World Economic Forum.
I am convinced that this year’s Lighthouse Activities will inspire you and help you take practical ideas for action to your communities. Each of us has a role to play in meeting the climate challenge, and sharing success helps raise ambition and scale up the global commitment to act on climate change.
Sincerely,
Christiana Figueres | UNFCCC Executive Secretary

Russian anarchist and anti-war movement in the third year of full-scale warAntti Rautiainen
Anarchist group ANA Regensburg hosted my online-presentation on 16th of May 2024, in which I discussed tactics of anti-war activism in Russia, and reasons why the anti-war movement has not been able to make an impact to change the course of events yet. Cases of anarchists repressed for anti-war activities are presented, as well as strategies of support for political prisoners, and modest successes in supporting their struggles.

3. 2016 analysis of recycling in Leonia
Less than 20% of what is being put on the curb is recycled.
May 2017: The Environmental Commission proposes “Pay
as you Throw” to the Mayor & Council
PAYT is practiced in hundreds of towns across the country
and is a proven way to dramatically increase recycling,
reduce tipping fees and, if desired, increase municipal
revenue.
Response by the public was mixed with many supporters
but also some vocal dissent. Many residents had not
enough information to form an opinion.
We agreed to provide more education and return to the
M&C with the results of this effort.

Where did we start
4. What happened since
Between the Environmental Commission and the Leonia
Action Alliance, we conducted over a dozen educational
events and outreach activities.
With the help of the borough administration, we gathered
more data about apartment complexes which make up a
significant portion of the housing stock in Leonia.
Youth group such as the girl scouts and the boy scouts have
come forward and are demanding action to reduce our
footprint of waste in our town.
The school districts has moved to ban Styrofoam from the
schools and an ordinance to extend this to Leonia is making
its way through the legislative process
With the help of the Mayor & Council, we distributed
hundreds of recycling pails in Leonia.

6. What changed at the curb
In a word or two: not much
2016 Average of curb recycling: 19.0%
2017 Average of curb recycling: 19.5%

here
Pay as you throw is the only feasible way to materially
improve recycling in Leonia.

The next generation is demanding change and we have
a responsibility to act.
The Environmental Commission is looking for support
and courage from the Mayor & Council and is prepared
to come back with a specific proposal to enact Pay as
you throw including:
Options to implement tax neutral or revenue generating
A plan for education and outreach
Operational details on the rollout
