Many people advise against using the DTO pattern, but often for the wrong reasons. It is often argued that DTOs are just copies of entities and that they represent unnecessary boilerplate, but that is only the case for very simple or degenerate synthetic use cases. We will also compare Kafka Streams' light-weight library approach with heavier, framework-based tools such as Spark Streaming or Storm, which require you to understand and operate a whole different infrastructure for processing real-time data in Kafka.

Real-time Analytics with Upsert Using Apache Kafka and Apache Pinot | Yupeng ...
Apache Kafka is used as the primary message bus for propagating events and logs across Uber. In particular, it pairs with Apache Pinot, a real-time distributed OLAP datastore, to deliver real-time insights seconds after the messages produced to Kafka.
One challenge we faced was to update existing data in Pinot with the changelog in Kafka, and deliver an accurate view in the real-time analytical results. For example, the financial dashboard can report gross booking with the corrected Ride fares. And restaurant owners can analyze the UberEats orders with their latest delivery status.
Implementing upserts in an immutable real-time OLAP store like Pinot is nontrivial. We need to make architectural changes in how data is distributed via Kafka amongst the server nodes, how it's indexed and queried in a distributed fashion. In this talk I will discuss how we leveraged Kafka's partition-by-key feature to this end and how we added this ability in Pinot without any performance degradation.
Compression Options in Hadoop - A Tale of Tradeoffs
Yahoo! is one of the most-visited web sites in the world. It runs one of the largest private cloud infrastructures, one that operates on petabytes of data every day. Being able to store and manage that data well is essential to the efficient functioning of Yahoo!`s Hadoop clusters. A key component that enables this efficient operation is data compression. With regard to compression algorithms, there is an underlying tension between compression ratio and compression performance. Consequently, Hadoop provides support for several compression algorithms, including gzip, bzip2, Snappy, LZ4 and others. This plethora of options can make it difficult for users to select appropriate codecs for their MapReduce jobs. This paper attempts to provide guidance in that regard. Performance results with Gridmix and with several corpuses of data are presented. The paper also describes enhancements we have made to the bzip2 codec that improve its performance. This will be of particular interest to the increasing number of users operating on “Big Data” who require the best possible ratios. The impact of using the Intel IPP libraries is also investigated; these have the potential to improve performance significantly. Finally, a few proposals for future enhancements to Hadoop in this area are outlined.

"Structured Streaming was a new streaming API introduced to Spark over 2 years ago in Spark 2.0, and was announced GA as of Spark 2.2. Databricks customers have processed over a hundred trillion rows in production using Structured Streaming. We received dozens of questions on how to best develop, monitor, test, deploy and upgrade these jobs. In this talk, we aim to share best practices around what has worked and what hasn't across our customer base.
We will tackle questions around how to plan ahead, what kind of code changes are safe for structured streaming jobs, how to architect streaming pipelines which can give you the most flexibility without sacrificing performance by using tools like Databricks Delta, how to best monitor your streaming jobs and alert if your streams are falling behind or are actually failing, as well as how to best test your code."
Advanced Debugging with GDB
When the debugging of modern software is required, basic GDB techniques are insufficient, but new techniques can be created from the nearly 160 commands available in GDB. "Modern software" refers to multi-threading, using STL and other libraries, IPC, signals and exception
mechanisms. In this lecture, techniques for debugging large, modern software written in C++ will be explained.

In the session, we discussed the End-to-end working of Apache Airflow that mainly focused on "Why What and How" factors. It includes the DAG creation/implementation, Architecture, pros & cons. It also includes how the DAG is created for scheduling the Job and what all steps are required to create the DAG using python script & finally with the working demo.
Being Functional on Reactive Streams with Spring Reactor
The journey begins with using Java 8 introduced Optional/Stream/CompletableFuture more functional, after which Reactive Streams is introduced with a homemade implementation that is ultimately made functional to increase usability. Finally Spring Reactor (Project Reactor) is presented and used for building a device simulator periodically reporting data to device controller.
Redis + Apache Spark = Swiss Army Knife Meets Kitchen Sink
We want to present multiple anti patterns utilizing Redis in unconventional ways to get the maximum out of Apache Spark.All examples presented are tried and tested in production at Scale at Adobe. The most common integration is spark-redis which interfaces with Redis as a Dataframe backing Store or as an upstream for Structured Streaming. We deviate from the common use cases to explore where Redis can plug gaps while scaling out high throughput applications in Spark.

Blaze-Persistence GraphQL - High performance querying and Relay pagination @J...
GraphQL is getting more popular every day! More and more UI developers demand a GraphQL interface
so that they can do their work without wasting time on communication with the backend team.
There are solutions that allow exposing the whole JPA model, but doing that is rarely advisable.
Using annotations to exclude certain attributes or registering a special data fetcher to fetch attributes
requires manual wiring and is neither comfortable nor does it work well with the declarative schema approach.
Aren't GraphQL types just DTOs which we have written before? In many ways that is true, but to improve performance,
it is vital to make use of the GraphQL selection list feature to avoid loading unnecessary data.
When it comes to pagination, the GraphQL Relay spec provides guidance, but defining all the required types
and implementing the cursor pagination manually seems like a daunting task that should be done by a library.
Fortunately, Blaze-Persistence with Entity Views already solves all the underlying problems and comes to rescue.

The pandemic and its broad response from the scientific community has forged new relationships among public health practitioners, mathematical modelers, and scientific computing specialists, while revealing critical gaps in exploiting advanced computing systems to support urgent decision making. Informed by our team’s work in applying high-performance computing in support of public health decision makers during the COVID-19 pandemic, we present how Globus technologies are enabling the development of an open science platform for robust epidemic analysis, with the goal of collaborative, secure, distributed, on-demand, and fast time-to-solution analyses to support public health.
