Definition: What is literature? Why do we read it? Why is literature important?
Literature is a term used to describe written or spoken material. Broadly speaking, "literature" is used
to describe anything from creative writing to more technical or scientific works, but the term is most
commonly used to refer to works of the creative imagination, including works of poetry, drama,
fiction, and nonfiction.
What are the two types of literature?
Two types of literature are written and oral. Oral literature includes ballads, folklore,
jokes and fables that are passed down by word of mouth. Written literature includes
poetry and novels, with subsections for fiction, prose, myth, short story and novel.
A folk ballad is usually impersonal. These stories are short narratives and are meant to
be sung. Love, death and the supernatural are popular themes. Incremental repetition
advances the action in small but significant ways. A ballad stanza contains four lines.
They present brief descriptions, use concise dialogue and end abruptly. A literary
ballad, however, purposefully imitates the form and spirit of a ballad but is longer and
more involved. An example of a literary ballad is Longfellow's "The Wreck of the
Hesperus."

What are the two divisions of literature?
The two divisions of literature are prose and poetry. While prose is written in a
straightforward manner to appeal to the reader's intellect, poetry has a more rhythmic,
imaginative tone used to awaken the reader's emotion.
Prose is written in paragraph form and is meant to reflect common, everyday language.
The chief objectives of prose are to inform or educate the reader, or instruct the reader
to do something. Examples of prose include a novel, essay, letter or biography.
Poetry is written in verse form, with the express intent to appeal to the reader's emotion.
It relies heavily on the use of metaphors and abstract language to encourage the
readers to use their imagination. Examples of poetry include a ballad, an epic, a sonnet
or a song.

The Three Types Of English
There are a myriad of ways of classifying all sorts of different ‘English. Since leaving the UK and
moving to Spain, I think about this a lot more than ever before, and it strikes me that I’m dealing with
three different kinds of English on almost a daily basis:
1. Native-Speaker Level English
2. International English
3. The kind of English only understood by non-native English speakers who share the same same
native tongue.

  • 1. Definition: What is literature? Why do we read it? Why is literature important? Literature is a term used to describe written or spoken material. Broadly speaking, "literature" is used to describe anything from creative writing to more technical or scientific works, but the term is most commonly used to refer to works of the creative imagination, including works of poetry, drama, fiction, and nonfiction. What are the two types of literature? Two types of literature are written and oral. Oral literature includes ballads, folklore, jokes and fables that are passed down by word of mouth. Written literature includes poetry and novels, with subsections for fiction, prose, myth, short story and novel. A folk ballad is usually impersonal. These stories are short narratives and are meant to be sung. Love, death and the supernatural are popular themes. Incremental repetition advances the action in small but significant ways. A ballad stanza contains four lines. They present brief descriptions, use concise dialogue and end abruptly. A literary ballad, however, purposefully imitates the form and spirit of a ballad but is longer and more involved. An example of a literary ballad is Longfellow's "The Wreck of the Hesperus." While prose is written in a straightforward manner to appeal to the reader's intellect, poetry has a more rhythmic, imaginative tone used to awaken the reader's emotion. Prose is written in paragraph form and is meant to reflect common, everyday language. The chief objectives of prose are to inform or educate the reader, or instruct the reader to do something. Examples of prose include a novel, essay, letter or biography. Poetry is written in verse form, with the express intent to appeal to the reader's emotion. It relies heavily on the use of metaphors and abstract language to encourage the readers to use their imagination. Examples of poetry include a ballad, an epic, a sonnet or a song.
