2. Introduction
0 Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of
11 players each on a field at the centre of which is a
rectangular 22-yard long pitch. Each team takes its turn to
bat, attempting to score runs, while the other team fields.
Each turn is known as an innings.
0 The bowler delivers the ball to the batsman who attempts to
hit the ball with his bat away from the fielders so he can run
to the other end of the pitch and score a run. Each batsman
continues batting until he is out. The batting team continues
batting until ten batsmen are out, or a specified number of
overs of six balls have been bowled, at which point the teams
switch roles and the fielding team comes in to bat.
3. 0One team bats, attempting to score runs, while the
other bowls and fields the ball, attempting to
restrict the scoring and dismiss the batting team.
The objective of the game is for a team to score
more runs than its opponent. In some forms of
cricket, it may also be necessary to dismiss the
opposition in order to win the match, which would
otherwise be drawn.
0There are separate leagues for Women's cricket,
though informal matches may have mixed teams.
4. Early cricket
0 In the earliest definite reference to cricket being played in England
(and hence anywhere) is in evidence given at a 1598 court case
which mentions that "creckett" was played on common land in
Guildford, Surrey, around 1550. It was believed that it was
originally a children's game but references around 1610 indicate
that adults had started playing it and the earliest reference to
inter-parish or village cricket occurs soon afterwards.
0 During the 17th century, numerous references indicate the growth
of cricket in the south-east of England. By the end of the century, it
had become an organised activity. A newspaper report survives of
"a great cricket match" with eleven players a side that was played
for high stakes in Sussex in 1697 and this is the earliest known
reference to a cricket match of such importance.
5. 0 The game underwent major development in the 18th century and
became the national sport of England. Cricket was prominent in
London as early as 1707 and large crowds flocked to matches on
the Artillery Ground in Finsbury. The single wicket form of the
sport attracted huge crowds and wagers to match.
0 In the 1730s Frederick Prince of Wales played a major role in
developing the sport. Bowling evolved around 1760 when bowlers
began to pitch the ball instead of rolling or skimming it towards the
batsman. This caused a revolution in bat design because, to deal
with the bouncing ball, it was necessary to introduce the modern
straight bat in place of the old "hockey stick" shape.
0 MCC quickly became the sport's premier club and the custodian of
the Laws of Cricket. New Laws introduced in the latter part of the
18th century included the three stump wicket and leg before
wicket (lbw).
6. The men’s cricket world cup was first
held in 1975 in England, which was the
only nation that was able to put forward
the resources to stage an event of such
magnitude.
The first three tournament were
officially known as the Prudential cup.
The matches were of 60 overs per team.
Eight teams participated in the first
tournament. West Indies won the first
world cup defeating Australia by 17 runs
in the final
History of the World Cup
7. The next world cup was held in 1979.
And the defending champions defended the cup as
West Indies again won the world cup defeating
England by 92 runs.
The 1987 world cup was first time held in India and
Pakistan. The game was reduced to 50 overs per
innings because of the shorter daylight.
In 1983 world cup India made the history by
defeating the two time and defending champions
West Indies in the final by 43 runs.
8. The 2011 world cup was
played in India ,Srilanka and
Bangladesh. The opening
ceremony was on 17
February at Bangalandhu
national stadium in Dhaka .
The first match was between
India and Sri Lanka at
Wankhade stadium Mumbai.
India again wrote history by
defeating Srilanka In the
final by 4 wickets.
9. ICC
0 The International Cricket Council (ICC) is the international
governing body of cricket. It was founded as the Imperial
Cricket Conference in 1909 by representatives from England,
Australia and South Africa, renamed the International Cricket
Conference in 1965, and took up its current name in 1989.
0 The ICC has 106 members. The ICC is responsible for the
organisation and governance of cricket's major international
tournaments.
0 The ICC does not control bilateral fixtures between member
countries (which include all Test matches), it does not govern
domestic cricket in member countries, and it does not make the
laws of the game, which remain under the control of the
Marylebone Cricket Club.
10. BCCI
0 The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI),
headquartered at Mumbai, India is the national governing body
for all cricket in India. The board was formed in December 1928
as BCCI replaced Calcutta Cricket Club. It is a "private club
consortium". To become a member of a state-level association,
one needs to be introduced by another member and also pay an
annual fee. The state-level clubs select their representatives
(secretaries) who in turn select the BCCI officials.
0 As a member of the International Cricket Council (ICC), it has the
authority to select players, umpires and officials to participate in
international events and exercises total control over them.
Without its recognition, no competitive cricket involving BCCI-
contracted Indian players can be hosted within or outside the
country.
