Cricket
History
  Started in the 16th Century in England
  International Matches began in 1844
  Got it’s name from the Middle Dutch or Old English word

“Creckett”
  Common forms of the game are Test Cricket, One Day

Cricket or Limited Overs Cricket, & Twenty20
  2 teams
  11 players on each team
  Batsmen, Bowlers, Wicket Keepers, & Fielders
  Play Innings & Overs
 Innings: Term used for the collective performance

of the batting side
 Overs: Bowler bowls the ball in sets of six
deliveries and each set of six balls is called an over.
  Test Cricket: The original form of the game
  Played for 7 hours with a break in the middle
  Lasts 3-5 days
  2 innings per team

  One Day Cricket or Limited Overs Cricket
  Completed in one day
  As many runs as you can in limited overs (20-50)

  Twenty20
  Newest version of the game
  Maximum of 20 overs
  Completed in about 3 hours
Cricket Field
  Grass
  Circular or oval-shaped
  There are no fixed dimensions for

the field but its diameter usually
varies between 450 feet (137 m) to
500 feet (150 m)
  Rectangular clay strip usually with
short grass called the pitch which
measures 22 yards (20 m) long.
Scoring
  Scoring in cricket matches involves two things
  the number of runs scored by each team
  the number of wickets each has lost

  The score of a cricket team for innings in progress is shown

as the number of runs they have scored "for" the number of
wickets their opponents have taken.
  For example, a team that has scored 100 runs and lost three

wickets has a score of "a hundred for three", written 100–3
(also 100/3 or 3/100)
  The team that scores the most runs wins
Equipment
  Gloves
  Helmet
  Leg Guards
  Bat
  Ball
Wickets
  Stumps
  Bails
  Creases
  Wicket Keeper
Bowlers
  Bowls the ball to the Batsman
  Tries to get the batsmen out

by bowling the ball and hitting
the stumps, knocking off the
bails
  Fastest bowlers can deliver the
ball at a speed of over 90 miles
per hour
  The ball is supposed to bounce
once before reaching the
batsman
Batsmen
  2 Batsmen on the field
  The one batting is called the

striker, the other is the nonstriker
  Scores runs by hitting the ball
  Idea is to hit the ball as close to
the barrier as possible
  Can make a single, 2, 3, 4 or 6
runs
  Run to opposite sides of the
wickets to make runs
Batsmen Cont.
  Different shots or swings
  Pull shot
  Glance

  When a batsman is out he is

replaced by a teammate
  A team bats until the end of
10 innings or their 10 batters
are out
  Run Out
  When a player is not behind

the crease before the ball and
the other team puts down the
wicket
Fielders
  Nine fielding positions can be used at any given time
  The captain may move players between fielding positions at

any time except when a bowler is in the act of bowling to a
batsman
  Fielding positions are not fixed
  Slips ,Fly slip, Gully, Leg slip, & Leg gully are there to “catch
out” the batsman
  The captain is the most important member of the fielding side
  He determines all the tactics like who should bowl and how
  He is responsible for "setting the field” usually in consultation with

the bowler
Cricket Fielder Positions
  Deep, long: Farther away from the batsman
  Short: Closer to the batsman
  Silly: Very close to the batsman
  Square: Somewhere along an imaginary extension of the

popping crease
Officiating
  The game on the field is regulated by two umpires
  One stands behind the wicket at the bowler's end
  The other in a position called "square leg",
  a position 15–20 meters to the side of the "on strike" batsman
  Off the field and in televised matches there is often a third umpire

who can make decisions on certain incidents with the aid of video
evidence
  third umpire is mandatory for Test matches and limited overs
internationals played between two ICC full members
  The match details, runs and dismissals, are recorded by two
official scorers, one representing each team
Indoor Cricket
  2 teams
  6-8 Players per team
  Rules are mostly the same
  A ball that is struck to hit the

boundary wall behind the
bowler without touching the
floor or any other part of the
wall or roof part scores six
runs.
  A ball struck directly to hit
the roof becomes dead
immediately
  Very Popular in the UK
International Cricket
  The International Cricket Council (ICC) is the international

governing body of cricket
  10 Full Members that play official Test matches, 36 Associate

Members, & 60 Affiliate Members
  The U.S.A. is an Associate Member
