Phrasal Verbs
1.
What are Phrasal
Verbs?
“
Phrasal Verbs are sometimes
called multi-word verbs
They’re used just like other
verbs
3
Definition:
A Phrasal Verb is a combination of a verb
(such as “make” or “pick”)
With one or two particles
(An adverb or a preposition)
That results in a new word or unit of
meaning.
4
Look up (verb + prep)
Look up: (definition) to
turn your eyes upwards
This is not a phrasal verb
Sentence Example: I
looked up and saw a
plane
A simple verb + a preposition is not
always a phrasal verb
Look up (phrasal verb)
Look up: (definition) to look
at a book or computer in
order to find information
Sentence example: I looked
it up in my dictionary
5
Phrasal verbs are an important part of
English.
They are particularly common in everyday
spoken English, and informal written English
But they’re also used in many formal texts
such as business letters, academic writing and
scientific papers
6
Phrasal verbs can seem difficult to learn
Because it can be difficult or impossible to guess the
meanings of phrasal verbs from the meanings of their
individual verbs and particles
Example:
Sell up - to sell your business or property and move
somewhere else
Own up - to admit or confess that you have done
something wrong
7
2.
Types of Phrasal
Verbs
There are two
main types of
Phrasal verbs
9
Intransitive Phrasal Verbs
Are always inseparable: they do not take a direct object
between the two parts of the phrasal verb
Examples:
Back down
Get by
Hang up
Grow up
Pass out
10
11
Transitive Phrasal Verbs
Also called separable phrasal verbs, can take a direct object
between the two parts of the phrasal verb or after the phrasal
verb (never before)
Example:
Look up (something) or Look (something) up
I looked up the word apple in the dictionary
Or
I looked apple up in the dictionary / I looked it up in the
dictionary
12
Transitive Phrasal Verbs
Some transitive phrasal verbs must have the object between
the verb and the particle. Example:
Talk into: I talked my boss into giving me more holidays
Some transitive phrasal verbs must have the object after the
particle. Example
Look after: I looked after the children while my wife was away
Keep in Mind
This presentation will be used throughout
several classes so keep it handy!
