• Topic : what the text about, the style the text written in
• Purpose : who the text is written for, the reason for writing
• Main idea :
The most important thing that the author wants to communicate
The most important thing that the author wants to communicate
TOPIC VS MAIN IDEA
• Consist of one or two words
• General subject
• Include in title
• Consists of 1 sentence
• Specific and comprehensive
• Include in text or paragaph
Purpose
• To entertain : imaginative words
• To inform : provide facts about topics to prove writer belief (instruct,
describe, explain)
• To persuade (ads, movie review, academic arguments, political
speech)
How to find Purpose
• Is the text a novel, a story, or a poem? If the answer is yes, its purpose is probably to entertain.
• Does the text offer a set of facts? If so, its purpose is probably to inform.
• Does the text provide a series of steps to accomplish a specific task? If so, it is a text that instructs.
• Does the text tell how something works? If so, its purpose is to explain.
• Does the text provide sensory details that allow the reader to form a mental picture? If the answer is yes, it is
probably a text that describes.
• Does the text attempt to change the reader's opinion about something or encourage the reader to act in a
particular way? If so, it is probably intended to persuade
