Ever since the first automobile was created, Americans have been obsessed with speed. Illegal
street racing became popular in the 1950s with the evolution of the motor vehicle. In the 50s and
70s, Hollywood romanticized the activity in movies like Rebel Without a Cause and American
Graffiti. (Petrocelli, 2007) The need for speedgrew as vehicles became more powerful and faster.
But, speed and racing did not come without great consequence. Statistics show in 1999 street racing
involved deaths, but was not a giant issue at the time.

Yes, street racing was happening, but not as often. The races were taken to a secluded area, on a
road that was less travelled, and typically late hours of the night. Street racing was not a big
problem in Florida, due having 4 legal NHRA style drag strips at the time, Orlando Speed
World, Bradenton Motorsports Park, Gainesville Raceway, and Moroso Motorsports Park. The
drag strips conducted test and tune nights, which is typically twice a week, allowing drivers to
race their friends or whoever. The drag strips also occasionally held a fun day Sunday, which the
racing would last all day. But, after the release of Fast and the Furious , drag racing became a
double edge sword. It began happening on the drag strip and on the street.
A new subculture was born, Underground Street Racing! Street racing was happening anytime
anywhere, did not matter if it was in mid day traffic or on a neighborhood road. Street racers did
