In a paper published in 2011 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of
Sciences, researchers tested the common caricature of legal realism that justice is
what the judge ate for breakfast . They studied eight parole judges in Israel over 50
days in a 10 month period, who spent their entire days reviewing applications for
parole. What they found was shocking, that the percentage of favorable rulings
dropped gradually to nearly zero within each decision session and returned abruptly
to around 65% after a break. This is illustrated in the diagram below, where dotted
lines indicate food breaks. This was after accounting for different variables and
checking for alternative explanations.
This goes to show that the human mind is limited. Even moral decisions made by
highly educated individuals cannot escape the curse of mental fatigue as shown by
the Israelian judge study. The human rationality is also often plagued by hindsight
bias, the anchoring effect, the bandwagon effect, negativity bias, amidst a whole list
of cognitive biases, best illustrated in Daniel Kahneman s Thinking Fast Slow.
If we could design a machine that can make decisions without the fallibility of human
rationality, would it then be a better idea to let the machines make decisions on our
behalf, and save us from the mistakes of our minds?
My answer is that we should not allow machines to make moral decisions on our

The philosopher John Locke once said, [g]overnment has no other end, but the
preservation of property ( John Locke ). The social contract is the fundamental basis
for modern government. This idea affects everything we believe a modern state
should represent for itself and its people. This way of understanding the role of
government was inspired by the writings of the Enlightenment era philosophers. This
way of understanding the role of the state and its people is significantly different from
what was believed in ancient Athens and Rome. The Enlightenment era philosophers
did more than just think of new ideas of government; their works not only inspired
changes during the 18th century, but also continued to shape modern governments.
While it is true that certain forms of democracy evolved in ancient Athens and Rome,
modern governments differ significantly from these ancient societies. In some cases,
the very words put forth by the philosophers were written directly into the
constitutions of countries practicing these new ideas. Without the contributions of
John Locke and other enlightenment philosophers, democracy and government as we
know it today would not exist.

I Am A Peace At The Vail Valley Medical Center After...
To begin, I want to clarify that I am not sharing this because I seek sympathy, I am
rather sharing this because I feel that I owe a sincere explanation to you all.
My father was admitted to the Vail Valley Medical Center after suffering from
withdrawal symptoms from alcoholism on June 21st, 2015 (Father s Day), one week
before I left for the United States Naval Academy. Within the first week of Plebe
Summer I learned that he had almost passed away after developing a staph
infection and that Flight For Life Colorado had to transport him to a larger
hospital in Denver. During Plebe Summer I also learned that my grandfather,
whom I had been extremely close with, had passed away on July 14th, 2015. I
missed the funeral that was held on July 21st, 2015 in Durango because I was in
Annapolis, and I was therefore unable to be there for my grandmother. These two
events reinforced how much I value my family and my proximity to them. I made
the difficult decision to depart the United States Naval Academy because I felt that
I needed to be in Colorado to support my family, especially my mother and my 14
year old brother. I want you all to know that I do not place any blame on my father

Companies throw the term innovation around but that doesn t mean they are actually
changing anything monumental. Leslie Kwoh reports on digits.
Businesses throw around the term to show they re on the cutting edge of everything
from technology and medicine to snacks and cosmetics. Companies are touting chief
innovation officers, innovation teams, innovation strategies and even innovation days.

Capgemini Consulting.

I am an intern at the Domestic Violence Legal Clinic, located on the first floor of
the Domestic Violence Courthouse of Chicago at 555 W Harrison St. The clinic
offers free civil legal assistance to low income victims of domestic violence. I
have been interning at the clinic since August 28, 2017 for 15 20 hours a week. I
originally intended to intern on Mondays and Fridays from 8:30AM 4:30 PM, but
due to holidays and instances in which the clinic was closed on Fridays, I now also
intern on Wednesdays from 8:30 AM 12:30 PM. A typical day for me at the clinic
begins at 8:30 AM, when the buildings opens. The actual court opens for first
returns of service 9:00 AM. I usually wait around 30 45 minutes until the clients fill
out their intakes before we proceed with the paperwork they need to file an order
of protection. If there are no clients by 9:30 AM, I usually go to the second floor to
observe in court. Most of the time this consists of cross examinations, which I don
t observe often when I work with Pro Se litigants in the afternoon. In other

The Miraculous Mandarin is a one acted ballet composed by BГ©la BartГіk. BГ©la
BartГіk is a Hungarian composer, who was born on March 25, 1881 and is now one

and sister, ErzsГ©bet in a small town called NagyszentmiklГіs, Austria Hungary.

and expect during that time period. They also vary on their manners, duties, ages,
and skills. Kids start training since the age of seven, especially if they want to be in

Gaol Learning Experience
My three and a half months of working at the Huron County and Huron Historic
Gaol have flown by. Time has gone far too quickly and I cannot believe that my
time here has come to a close. I am so grateful for the opportunity I was given to
work at the museum and gaol this summer. It has been a learning experience that I
will never forget. I began working at the museum and gaol in May. The first month
centred on familiarizing myself with the two buildings and gaining and
understanding as to how they function. I spent time learning about the history of
both sites. I took place in an orientation for about the first two weeks of work. The
orientation was led by museum curator, Patricia Hamilton. I was guided through the
Huron County Museum, Huron Historic gaol and Sky Harbour Gallery with the
help of Pat and the audio tour mates. Pat gave us students all of the basic
knowledge that we would need to know about the three sites in order to answer
questions from tourists and the general public. I learned a lot about each exhibit on

Bub have very similar personality characteristics. As each story unfolds, each narrator
meets an unusual character. At first they judge this character poorly. At the end of
each story, Sammy and Bub undergo an epiphany caused by the unusual character.
Both narrators have similar revelations. The way Carver tells the story, Bub
undergoes a stronger epiphany than Sammy. At the beginning of each story, Sammy
and Bub have very similar personality characteristics. They are both closed minded.

realizes that life is difficult and not what he expected. Also, when Sammy looks
back at Lengel inside the store, His face was dark gray and his back stiff, as if he
