Yesterday was my birthday. When I woke up, I noticed my brother Jun hung up a big sign that said, “Happy Birthday, Joey!” Mom made a spaghetti for dinner. It’s my favorite food in the whole world. My friend David came over and handed me a wrapped gift. I wondered what it was. It was a new basketball! I had a great day.
a. Which sentence should be the first one in the paragraph?
b. Which sentence should be the second? The third? And the fourth?
c. Which sentence should be the last one in the paragraph?
d. Do you think the sentence "A dog barked loudly as we approached." should be included in the selection? Why?
Remember that a paragraph is a series of related sentences that develop into a single topic or main idea. These sentences should be consistent with the ideas or topic presented in the selection. Any unrelated sentence will inhibit the readers' comprehension.
The correct sequence of this paragraph is 2, 5, 1, 6, and 3. The first sentence of "There was a fire on our block." tells the event, and other details, except for number 4, describe the event. The sentence "A dog barked loudly as we approached." does not contribute any idea about the paragraph; hence, it should be left out from the selection.
