A paragraph is a series of
related sentences that develop
the main idea, thought, or
concept.
SENTENCE
The sentence, the basic unit
of the paragraph, should be
clearly stated to exhibit clear
thought.
BASIC STRUCTURE OF A PARAGRAPH
TOPIC
GENERAL STATEMENT
SUPPORTING DETAILS
TOPIC
The topic is the core of the
paragraph and is anchored with
the main idea.
GENERAL STATEMENT
The General Statement or Topic Sentence is
the statement or sentence of the entire
paragraph. It is the overview of the whole
composition; hence most paragraph starts
with a topic sentence.
SUPPORTING DETAIL
The supporting details give all the
necessary information to answer the
WH questions.

 Direction: Read the short passage and complete the tasks given.

Yesterday was my birthday. When I woke
up, I noticed my brother Jun, hung up a big
sign that said, “Happy Birthday, Joey!”
Mom made a spaghetti for dinner. It’s my
favorite food in the whole world. My friend
David came over and handed me a wrapped
gift. I wondered what it was. It was a new
basketball! I had a great day.
(1) The fire trucks came out of the
firehouse. (2) There was a fire on our block.
(3) The trucks finally arrived, and the
firemen put out the fire. (4) A dog barked
loudly as we approached. (5) Someone
turned in the alarm at once. (6) As one truck
was turning a corner on the way to the fire,
it skidded into an automobile.

 1. Animal's sleeping habits differ in many ways.
 2. Some animals sleep during daylight while others sleep during darkness.
 3. They also differ in the length of time they sleep.
 4. Other animals sleep for weeks or months at a time when they hibernate.
 5. They differ according to what time of the day they sleep.

  • 6. PARAGRAPH A paragraph is a series of related sentences that develop the main idea, thought, or concept.
  • 7. SENTENCE The sentence, the basic unit of the paragraph, should be clearly stated to exhibit clear thought.
  • 8. BASIC STRUCTURE OF A PARAGRAPH TOPIC GENERAL STATEMENT SUPPORTING DETAILS
  • 9. TOPIC The topic is the core of the paragraph and is anchored with the main idea.
  • 10. GENERAL STATEMENT The General Statement or Topic Sentence is the statement or sentence of the entire paragraph. It is the overview of the whole composition; hence most paragraph starts with a topic sentence.
  • 11. SUPPORTING DETAIL The supporting details give all the necessary information to answer the WH questions.

Remember that a paragraph is a series of related sentences that develop into a single topic or main idea. These sentences should be consistent with the ideas or topic presented in the selection. Any unrelated sentence will inhibit the readers' comprehension. The correct sequence of this paragraph is 2, 5, 1, 6, and 3. The first sentence of "There was a fire on our block." tells the event, and other details, except for number 4, describe the event.
