Ferdinand Magellan led the first circumnavigation of the world in 1519-1522. Sailing for Spain, Magellan discovered the Strait of Magellan connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The expedition reached the Philippines before Magellan was killed. Only one ship, the Victoria, returned to Spain, proving the world could be sailed around. In the 17th century, the Dutch replaced the Portuguese in Southeast Asia. They seized the Moluccas islands from Portugal and established plantation economies. The Dutch also established colonies in North America, with Henry Hudson exploring the Hudson River and New York Bay in 1609.
