Students and residents in Sandton, South Africa are encouraged to use public transportation, walk, bike, or other eco-friendly transportation options instead of private vehicles to participate in the EcoMobility World Festival taking place in October during the country's Transport Month. The festival aims to reduce air pollution from vehicle exhaust emissions and make transportation more environmentally friendly. The University of Johannesburg is also participating by using golf carts on campus to reduce carbon dioxide and protect students with asthma.

Designing in The Walkable City
1) Stockholm has transformed over time from a walkable medieval old town to expanding suburbs focused on cars, and now aims to again promote walkability and transit with its city plan.
2) A survey of over 4,850 people about future scenarios for Stockholm showed the most popular was a "Techno City" focused on high growth, public transit, and shared mobility rather than car-oriented suburban sprawl.
3) Reducing car space and increasing pedestrian access and connectivity is a goal for redesigning areas like Slussen in Stockholm.

Pedestrians account for 30% of road users but occupy less than 3% of road space. Car users account for only 2% of road users but occupy 19% of road space.
