What is an Essay? An analysis of any topic in which there are points that get explained by sources/evidence. Consists of: Introduction paragraph Body paragraph(s) Concluding paragraph
Different Types of Essays Argumentative Essay A form of essay that tries to prove a point by supporting it with evidence Example:  Climate change is happening because of the increase in human activity.   Descriptive Essay   A type of essay in which it describes an object or animation using different adjectives Example:  What is your Utopia?
Expository Essay An explanation essay Cause and effect Compare and contrast Classification Sequencing Example:  Explain the cause and effect that World War I had on Canada?   Narrative Essay   An essay in which it is in the form of a story with a narrator explaining events taken place which try to prove a point or an initial thesis Example:  What was the best idea you ever had that made a difference in your life?
Formal Essay An essay where there is a subject that has to explained or proven with concrete evidence and proper essay format Example:  How did Canada contribute in World War I?   Informal Essay   A type of essay that allows the writer to go a bit off topic and not use proper evidence (assuming) allows humour  lets the author’s opinion get involved in the essay Example:  Why do you think Star Trek was popular?
Personal Essay   An informal essay that explains a personal opinion about any topic Example:  Explain whether or not you like cats . Persuasive Essay   An essay in which you try to convince the reader into believing one point other than the other Example:  Was Louis Riel a hero to the Métis?
What Makes a Good Essay? Formal essay A well thought out, serious, answer to an essay topic Good topic sentence Logical argument Wide range of supporting evidence Explain how the evidence is related to the topic Well organized essay structure Introduction 3+ body paragraphs Concluding summary
