What is ASSERTION?
-Is a statement that is
somewhat true and
somewhat false.
-Is a statement that many
people are declaring,
affirming, or assuming to
be true but cannot be
proven.
-It is a confident and forceful statement
of fact and belief.
There are four types of ASSERTION
◦Basic assertion
◦Emphatic assertion
◦Escalating assertion
◦Language assertion
BASIC ASSERTION
◦It is a simple and straightforward
statement for expressing feelings,
opinion and belief.
EXAMPLE:
◦I wish I could have express this idea earlier
because now someone else has taken the
credit.
EMPHATIC ASSERTION
◦It conveys sympathy to someone, and
usually has two parts, the first
encompasses the recognition of the
feelings or situation of the other
person, and the second is the
statement, that show support for the
other person, and the second is the
statement, that show support for the
other person’s viewpoint, feelings of
EXAMPLE:
“I understand you are busy and
me too, but it is difficult for me to
finish this project on my own. So I
want you to help me complete
this project”.
ESCALATING
ASSERTION
◦It occurs when someone is
not able to give response to
a person’s basic assertion
and therefore that person
become firm about him or
her.
EXAMPLE:
◦“If you do not finish this work by 6:00
tonight, I will engage the services to
another worker.”
LANGUAGE ASSERTION
-It involves the first person
pronoun “1” and is useful
for expressing negative
feelings. Nevertheless, it
constructively emphasizes
a person’s feelings of anger.
EXAMPLE:
◦“when you speak harshly, I cannot work
with you because I feel annoyed.
Therefore I want you to speak nicely
and then assign me a task.”
- A statement of assertion
does not start with I
think or I believed.
-It is considered as
declaration, as if it were true
even though it may not be.
