England and Germany (Deutschland) had close ancestral ties as Anglo-Saxon peoples until around 1900, when they entered into increasing competition for status as a world power. England developed agriculture, industrialization, and imperialism earlier in the 17th-18th-19th centuries. Germany learned from and emulated England's model of industrialization and nationalism in the 19th century. By 1914, Germany had become such a strong contender for global influence that the United States supported England in suppressing Germany's rise during World War I. In defeating Germany, England ultimately lost its own position as a world power to the ascendant United States.
