ENG 306 – Paper One Prompt
Stifling of Language and my Discourse Community
Throughout our years of schooling, most of us have been taught many approaches to writing. Most of those approaches involve a set of “rules” to follow. In “Rigid Rules, Inflexible Plans, and the Stifling of Language,” Mike Rose discusses how some of these approaches bring students to a dead-end in their writing process (p. 793). All too often, students let the rules of writing drive their entire writing process. In other words, they let HOW THEY SHOULD write become more important than WHAT THEY COULD write.
Even more troubling is just how conflicting writing rules can be. Many students have had the experience of having one teacher say, “You should never do [X]” while another teacher says, “You should always do [X].” How are student writers supposed to determine what “rules” to follow?
In this paper, you are being asked to engage in some observational research. You are being asked to choose two “rules” or pieces of writing advice that you have found yourself struggling with in the past, and determine how your academic discourse community follows (or doesn’t seem to follow) the them.
For example, assume I am like Maria in Mike Rose’s study, and I often get hung up on “hooks.” I have read explanations like those given by the Tutoring Center at George Brown College who write on their website:
The first sentence of your introduction is the first chance a writer has to capture the attention of the reader. This source could be a good source for my paper because it has aspects that talks more about race and how they interact on campus and each other. I think this article by far the best one I found because it get in depth with race discrimination in organziations , campuses, and each other. The goal of this source is to inform people on what goes on with each race and people who try to engage with people.

Mills defined sociological imagination as the manner in which individuals comprehend their own lives and the lives of others in connection to history and the structure of society. It is the ability to view the private struggles of a person within the perspective of the larger social processes that organize those struggles. Because of this, the sociologist is able to investigate what Mills referred to as "personal troubles of milieu" as "public issues of social structure," and vice versa. Personal issues can be of a purely internal origin, such as being overweight, being unemployed, having marital problems, or feeling purposeless or depressed. It is possible to address and comprehend them in terms of one's own or the individuals in one's immediate milieu's personal, psychological, or moral characteristics. This can be done either by the individual themselves or by the individual's immediate milieu. This is, in point of fact, the perspective that people are most likely to have on the problems that they are up against in an individualistic culture such as our own. On the other hand, if a person's personal problems are frequently discussed with other people, this may point to the existence of a widespread social issue that has its origins in the manner in which social life is organized. At this point, the problems cannot be effectively comprehended as being nothing more than private concerns. They are best dealt with as public concerns that call for a reaction from the community as a whole in order to be resolved. For example, people in North America are becoming more and more aware that obesity is a growing problem for both children and adults. According to statistics Canada, in 2012, 18.4 percent of adults were obese. So, obesity is not just a personal problem caused by the health problems, eating habits, or exercise habits of a few people. It is a widespread problem that puts people at risk for chronic diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

This should include an introduction or brief overview of the case and why you are presenting it. For example: “This case involving a family with a son in middle childhood is being presented to receive feedback regarding current intervention strategies and future goals.” Do not copy and paste the scenario or write any part of the scenario verbatim. Etherington describes the dehumanization of primary students as a direct result of
online pedagogy. He goes on to illustrate the potential problems that will stem from this:

human advancement led them to create better technology. This technology led humans to

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to discuss the
generational gaps that are found in the workplace
today. With multiple generations working together,
and the oldest generation having to work longer and
retire later, generational changes are occurring in the
workplace and for management. There is a lack of
communication and understanding between the
different generations caused through differing values
and goals. Younger generations are also entering
different fields than those that were popular for older
generations. There is a serious new problem in the
workplace, and it has nothing to do with downsizing,
global competition, pointy-haired bosses, stress or
greed. Instead, it is the problem of distinct
generations — the Veterans, the Baby Boomers, Gen
X and Gen Y — working together and often colliding
as their paths cross.
Individuals with different values, different ideas,
different ways of getting things done and different
ways of communicating in the workplace have always
existed. So, why is this becoming a problem now? At
work, generation differences can affect everything
including recruiting, building teams, dealing with
change, motivating, managing, and maintaining and
increasing productivity All of these ideas are
explored, discussed, and evaluated, through looking
at current research on the topic and case studies that
have been conducted not only in the United States but
around the world.

· What is advocacy?
Advocacy is how we support our children. We as teachers give advice for our children or we listen. We let the children and families know that we believe in them and we will be there for them. Teachers, admin, staff can advocate for children as long as they are in school. Advocates are also trained people and they are not lawyers. One of their responsibility is to stay up to date with the regulations of the educational laws.
· Why is advocacy important to early childhood education?
Its important to help the families because they might be vulnerable in society. We as teachers need to make sure our children and families are being heard. We as teachers need to make sure their wishes and views are being considered when it’s about their child or family. Its because we are helping the family make life decisions about their children and even their family life. Its also important to make sure we are not judging the family or having or our own personal opinions about what is going on when we are helping advocate for the family, we need to make sure we are stating the facts for the family.

Successful brands possess two characteristics. Top-of-mind are brands a consumer mentions first when asked about brands in a particular product category – these are brands in our Evoked Set. Top choice is the brand within a product category that consumers prefer the most. So top choice requires top-of-mind. Brand equity, which is the level of brand strength perceived by consumers, leads to top-of-mind and top choice brands.
This is also applicable on the B2B side when business people are faced with modified rebuy situations. A common dilemma I had was for every Fox Graduation Ceremony, there are three per year, and the need for graduation program booklets. There was a printer who I always wanted to hire because I enjoyed working with them, they always had fair prices and delivered high-quality programs in a timely manner. However, due to non-profit regulations, I had to bid the job to at least three vendors. So my top-of-mind, first choice brand was always included but I had to add two other vendors as well. Abstract
The purpose of this study is to discuss the
generational gaps that are found in the workplace
today. With multiple generations working together,
and the oldest generation having to work longer and
retire later, generational changes are occurring in the
workplace and for management. There is a lack of
communication and understanding between the
different generations caused through differing values
and goals. Younger generations are also entering
different fields than those that were popular for older
generations. There is a serious new problem in the
workplace, and it has nothing to do with downsizing,
global competition, pointy-haired bosses, stress or
greed. Instead, it is the problem of distinct
generations — the Veterans, the Baby Boomers, Gen
X and Gen Y — working together and often colliding
as their paths cross.
Individuals with different values, different ideas,
different ways of getting things done and different
ways of communicating in the workplace have always
existed. So, why is this becoming a problem now? At
work, generation differences can affect everything
including recruiting, building teams, dealing with
change, motivating, managing, and maintaining and
increasing productivity All of these ideas are
explored, discussed, and evaluated, through looking
at current research on the topic and case studies that
have been conducted not only in the United States but
around the world.

Throughout the years, as the population has continued to
both grow and age, it has caused generational changes to
take place in the various aspects of life. With the changes in
the demographics of the world’s population, there have also
been changes in how each group thinks and what they

Teachers, admin, staff can advocate for children as long as they are in school. Advocates are also trained people and they are not lawyers. One of their responsibility is to stay up to date with the regulations of the educational laws.

Successful brands possess two characteristics. Top-of-mind are brands a consumer mentions first when asked about brands in a particular product category – these are brands in our Evoked Set. Top choice is the brand within a product category that consumers prefer the most. So top choice requires top-of-mind. Brand equity, which is the level of brand strength perceived by consumers, leads to top-of-mind and top choice brands.
This is also applicable on the B2B side when business people are faced with modified rebuy situations. A common dilemma I had was for every Fox Graduation Ceremony, there are three per year, and the need for graduation program booklets. There was a printer who I always wanted to hire because I enjoyed working with them, they always had fair prices and delivered high-quality programs in a timely manner. However, due to non-profit regulations, I had to bid the job to at least three vendors. So my top-of-mind, first choice brand was always included but I had to add two other vendors as well. Tell story about Bill DeVece and misspelled student names and how wonderful he was in fixing these issues.

After completing the assessment, my Signature Theme Report produced the following results: Communication, Relator, Individualization, Consistency, and Strategic. When I first saw the themes presented, I was a little skeptical at first but after reading the detailed descriptions I felt like it made a lot of sense and mirrored a lot of what I had already thought about myself.
A core value that I would like to continue to strengthen would be the value of acceptance. One of my top five themes was relator which explained that I have a comfortability with gravitating towards people I already know and building relationships from there. I don’t have issues with making new relationships, but I can see that sometimes I close myself off initially to embracing new ones. With acceptance, you have to understand that there are some situations you can control and some that you can’t but embracing the latter can lead to new experiences that could be beneficial (Riley, 2021). Another core value that I would like to improve upon would be calmness. This fits in well with my theme of consistency. While I am a firm believer of things being fair and consistent, I can get easily upset when things don’t balance out like they are expected to. I know that working on being calm in tense situations will help me adapt easier when things don’t always work out as they should.
One of the strengths that I would like to embrace fully and continue to improve upon is communication. It was no surprise to me that communication was at the top of my list for my themes. When I am in a position of leadership at work, I make it a priority to keep my staff updated on everything that is going on for that night and it is something I expect from my charge nurse when I am working the floor also. A communicator is only effective when they are aware of their style of communicating and how others perceive or respond to it (Marshall & Broome, 2021). As a communicator I know that I can always work on how I communicate non-verbally and with body language especially. The other strength that I would like to continue to work on is of being strategic. The report explained that the strategic theme fit me because I am able to sort through the clutter and find the best route when I am trying to accomplish something. I really believe this about myself because when I have a task I need to accomplish, whether I am in a leader position or not, I will break everything down and reorganize it to make sure I have come up with the best solution. I feel like the best way to do something is the way that makes it concise and without a lot of excess getting in the way.
A characteristic of mine that I would like to strengthen would be that of instinct. My theme of individualization points out that I have an instinct about others and how they work and function. I have always felt that I easily read people and can get a sense of who they truly are and for example in the workplace how they are as a staff member. S.

Stifling of Language and my Discourse Community
Throughout our years of schooling, most of us have been
taught many approaches to writing. Most of those approaches
involve a set of “rules” to follow. In “Rigid Rules, Inflexible
Plans, and the Stifling of Language,” Mike Rose discusses how
some of these approaches bring students to a dead-end in their
writing process (p. 793). All too often, students let the rules of
writing drive their entire writing process. In other words, they
let HOW THEY SHOULD write become more important than
WHAT THEY COULD write.
Even more troubling is just how conflicting writing rules
can be. Many students have had the experience of having one
teacher say, “You should never do [X]” while another teacher
says, “You should always do [X].” How are student writers
supposed to determine what “rules” to follow?
In this paper, you are being asked to engage in some
observational research. You are being asked to choose two
“rules” or pieces of writing advice that you have found yourself
struggling with in the past, and determine how your academic
discourse community follows (or doesn’t seem to follow) the
them.
For example, assume I am like Maria in Mike Rose’s
study, and I often get hung up on “hooks.” I have read
explanations like those given by the Tutoring Center at George
Brown College who write on their website:
The first sentence of your introduction is the first chance a
writer has to capture the attention of the reader. Some people
call this a “hook” because it captures a reader’s attention with
interesting statements and ideas just like a fisherman will use a
shiny lure to get a fish on his or her hook.

Although I acknowledge that there are many factors that could
negatively impact the proper child growth and development due
to child abuse, I claim this because numerous studies have
shown that child abuse affects the child’s psychological and
emotional development which leaves them less capable of
navigating through life easily (Cole, 2006). We should,
therefore, act to ensure that this vice is eliminated from our
society to protect the future of our children. I also acknowledge
the fact that other factors such as being raised in an
unconducive environment could lead to the occurrence of these
effects on the child growth and development. I will, therefore,
consider this in my study.
Child abuse has the potential to cause devastating effects on the
growth and development of the individual. It could lead to
emotional instability, drug use and addiction, the inability to
form proper social relationships with others, behavioral
problems, and a lower quality of life in adulthood and low
income in the future (Cicchetti & Carlson, 1989). The study
looks at the effect of child abuse on the growth and
development of the child and seeks to answer the question, how
will the nation overcome this vice.
Looking at the philosophical background of child abuse and its
religious standpoint gives me an idea of the reasoning behind
the execution of the vice. From this line of thinking, I can find
ways of overcoming child abuse in the society. For instance, in
some communities, beating a child is seen as a way of
disciplining the child (McNeil, 2007). Therefore, one way of
combating this would be educating the community on the long-
term effects of the practice and introducing other ways of
disciplinary action for them to use.

author of this book, is a clinical professor in the field of

Medicine. According to the author, soul murder refers to
performing of brutal acts against the children that result in
emotional instability and a kind of bondage to the user. This in
turn leads to psychiatric disorders in the long run.
The author further examines the psychological effects of the

10. Childhood abuse has very serious effects on a person’s life after
that, including adult and family life. Some of these effects like
low self-esteem, negative attitude towards certain gender,
confusion, self-doubt, rage, depression, nightmares, apathy,
suspicion, sadness, fear and mistrust are described by the author
to be some of the experiences of a childhood abuse survivor.
The author notes that these experiences may later lead to
alcoholism, addiction to other hard illegal drugs and domestic
violence.

I am studying child abuse because I want to find out what the
impact has on growth and development of a child. This way, my
reader will best understand many types of child abuses and
possible effects they have on children as they grow into
adulthood. For example, some common types of child abuses of
interest include physical abuse, neglect, psychological abuse
and sexual abuse among others. The research topic on child
abuse will focus on the question; how can a society or nation
effectively fight against child abuse?
I purpose to resolve the problem of unique damage to growth
and development occasioned by child abuse which happens
either intentionally or due to ignorance. It is evident in many
forms of pathology and child abuse has emerged as the most
contributor of emotional, developmental and relational damage
when children become adults (Priolo-Filho & Williams, 2016).
Failing to answer the research question stated above, there
would be increased childhood abuse. For example, there are
high chances that it will cause permanent destruction to the
brain and eventually lead to emotional, physical and relational
damage. In addition, associated problems such as commercial
sex works and many others could result in the society if an
amicable solution is not provided by the research question.
Philosophy, religion and history will constitute relevant
humanity disciplines to aid in the study of the impact of child
abuse as follows. Philosophy will provide a detailed perception
of persons committing child abuse unintentional and cannot
recognize its detrimental consequences. Religion will be helpful
in understanding what different religions consider as a child
abuse and yet they do not observe it. Acquiring every religion
perspective would offer a good bargaining power to advise
people against child abuse. Lastly, history will offer a detailed
trend concerning the issue of child and therefore, devise
12. effective measures to resolve the problem.
