2. •The Generation 1 small block Chevrolet engine has been produced
from 1955 to present ( .
•The Generation 3 (LS) small block Chevrolet engine picked up
where the first generation left off in terms of modern innovations.
•There are a few different design factors that distinguish these two
engines apart from each other such as durability, emissions
production, power output, and fuel efficiency.

4. The Generation 1 Small Block
Chevrolet V8 Attributes
• Were mass produced by the millions, so finding a good
used motor or parts is easily obtained.
• By having so many units available, cost is generally
lower than the newer generation engines.
• Simplistic in design, allowing it to be repaired easily.
• Reliable for the application that it is intended for.

5. The Generation 3 Small Block
Chevrolet V8 Attributes
• Has a very high reliability rate(Amann, R., Damico,
M., Green, B., Hahn, C. et al.) .
• Engines yield excellent MPG (“Miles Per Gallon”).
• Power to engine displacement is high. That feature
yields a higher efficiency for the engine.
• The quality of the engine build is high, and that
yields a more robust product.

8. Pros and Cons of the
Differences in Designs
• There seems to be a strength for each engine type in certain ways. For
example: Not every person wants to spend top dollar for engine
replacement parts, so the Gen 3 may not be ideal for the budget minded
consumer. The Gen 1 would be ideal in this instance.
• The emissions standards are different for separate states in the U.S.(Find
Law). A budget minded consumer may also not need the engine that
complies with the stringent rules.
• Fuel mileage is an added bonus, but how long will it take to pay back the
higher demanding price for the Generation 3 engine vs the Generation 1?
The same logic applies to the reliability factor. Is the payback worth the
added cost?

11. But Wait! No Generation 2?
Due to the similarities in architecture to the generation 1
Small Block Chevrolet V8, this generation known as the LT1
will not be discussed. The generation 3 has major
innovations, including a brand new design.

12. The intended application is the
determining factor that decides
with both engines, why to
purchase or use either one.
• Maybe the reason is for nostalgia.
• Maybe the consumer could be wanting to do their part to help maintain
a cleaner planet.
But with either choice, the Gen 1 and Gen 3 Chevrolet
engines are great in their own similar and unique ways.
