Energy is the ability to do work and comes in different forms. ATP is a high-energy compound that provides energy for cellular processes. There are three main energy systems: 1) the phosphocreatine system produces ATP very fast without oxygen for intense bursts up to 15 seconds; 2) the lactic acid system produces ATP anaerobically over 60-90 seconds for high-intensity exercise; and 3) the aerobic system produces large amounts of ATP aerobically for continuous, long-term exercise over 24 hours. Each system is used in different sports and activities depending on their intensity and duration requirements.
