The Mayor of London works to make London a more resilient, sustainable and resource efficient city, where businesses want to be based and where people want to live and work. To achieve the Mayor’s vision for the environment, the GLA develops and delivers a set of results-focused programmes. These programmes also create jobs and attract investment in areas such as waste recycling, water, green infrastructure, energy and the low carbon and green economy. RE:FIT and RE:NEW are the Mayor of London award-winning programmes to help make London homes, non-domestic buildings and assets more energy efficient by cutting carbon emissions and energy bills. These programmes support organisations to develop and bring their energy efficiency projects to market. The Mayor’s DEPDU Successor programme – 50% funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) - is set up to support the Mayor’s target of 25 per cent of London’s energy to be generated through Decentralised Energy (DE) by 2025. The programme supports others to develop and bring their DE projects to market.

Utilising the OJEU compliant Framework procured by Peterborough City council, they have successfully deployed now a number of EnPC contracts with Honeywell. In this session, the Corporate Director of Resources - John Harrison, supported by Honeywell, will demonstrate how he has transformed this into a new source of funds for the Council (PCC are realising new funds of up to £4.5M) and how the Framework is available to all other Local Authorities, allowing them a fast and simple access to realise the same benefits.

The Edinburgh University created a Renewable Energy and Low Carbon Options (RELCO) Group to explore the technical and business cases for different pathways to achieve their organisational goal - Zero Carbon by 2040. As part of this renewable energy review process, the OnGen Expert was successfully used to screen dozens of sites across the 300+ buildings and land in and around south Edinburgh for their renewable energy potential and the financial case for installation. The OnGen platform was a key tool in determining viable renewable energy strategies on buildings across the University's complex estate and provided particular reassurance to the estates' team. The session explains how energy cost savings of £3.8m over 20 years and annual carbon savings as 600 tCO2e/year have been forecasted on 18 sites.

However, the benefits of flexibility and the role it has to play in balancing the grid is already very clear, and growth in this area will continue despite wider market volatility. As this flexibility becomes crucial to maintaining security of supply, it is incumbent on big businesses to do their part and be more responsible in managing their energy consumption. Companies will differ in how they can reduce demand and shift consumption out of peak times, but there will be direct benefits for the businesses that embrace it – both savings on energy bills and additional financial incentives for supporting the grid. In this session we will cover some of the schemes available for consumers with dynamic energy consumption, and the benefits of working with a supplier to integrate flexibility with procurement to ensure the best possible returns.

In 2014, Heathrow’s Terminal 2 Retail Fit-out Sustainability Project won the ‘Most energy efficient project of the year’ at the Environment and Energy Awards. This was for Discovery Mill’s approach and the work the Heathrow team collaboratively achieved with Heathrow’s retail business partners in reducing energy usage in T2 Retail. Predicted energy savings were assessed to be 17-24% compared to existing Terminal 5 operations, with additional direct savings for Heathrow through reduced central building plant consumption as well as reduced infrastructure costs.

This is the second in a series of 'Show and Tell' webinars from the Ofgem Strategic Innovation Fund Round 1 Discovery phase, covering the Heat projects. Consumers need better access to low-carbon heating options which remain reliable and affordable in comparison to existing solutions. For many domestic, commercial, and industrial end consumers, heat comprises a considerable proportion of their energy bills. There are a variety of technologies which could potentially contribute to heat decarbonisation. These include heat networks, electric and hybrid heat pumps, hydrogen, biofuels and others. As examples, you will hear from SIF projects working on developing the gas networks to adapt to hydrogen, and electricity networks exploring the use of thermal energy storage as a source of flexibility. The Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) is an Ofgem programme managed in partnership with Innovate UK, part of UKRI. The SIF aims to fund network innovation that will contribute to achieving Net Zero rapidly and at lowest cost to consumers, and help transform the UK into the ‘Silicon Valley’ of energy, making it the best place for high-potential businesses to grow and scale in the energy market. The study investigated the design optimization of these hybrid systems, focusing on understanding solar radiation patterns, identifying geographical influences on solar radiation, formulating a mathematical model for system optimization, and determining the optimal configuration of PV panels and pumped hydro storage. Through a comparative analysis approach and eight weeks of data collection, the study addressed key research questions related to solar radiation patterns and optimal system design. The findings highlighted regions with heightened solar radiation levels, showcasing substantial potential for power generation and emphasizing the system's efficiency. Optimizing system design significantly boosted power generation, promoted renewable energy utilization, and enhanced energy storage capacity. The study underscored the benefits of optimizing hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems for sustainable energy usage. Optimizing the design of solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems as examined across diverse climatic conditions in a developing country, not only enhances power generation but also improves the integration of renewable energy sources and boosts energy storage capacities, particularly beneficial for less economically prosperous regions. Additionally, the study provides valuable insights for advancing energy research in economically viable areas. Recommendations included conducting site-specific assessments, utilizing advanced modeling tools, implementing regular maintenance protocols, and enhancing communication among system components.

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacks

This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations. When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10 and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating adversary training.
