the power of
this world government will
come
from
Satan himself.
Bringing this
all together, the
prophecy states
that, in order to
gain entry into
the
coming
global economy, a person
will have to
take on the
mark of Satan.
This, for obvious
reasons,
will result in
eternal damnation. After all,
it’s what one
should expect
for taking on
the mark of
Satan.
The prophecy
reads like this:
“And
he
causeth
all,
both small and
great, rich and
poor, free and
bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in
their foreheads: And that no man might
buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or
the name of the beast, or the number of
his name.”
It is more than a coincidence that we
are living today on the brink of a global
cashless society. A worldwide economic
system is being established, as we speak,
that will have the ability to lock people
ver since the patent rights for “Digital Angel” were acquired late last year by Applied Digital Systems of Palm
Beach, Florida, many in the Christian community have
been alarmed that this product will become the mechanism used
by the Antichrist to fulfill the mark of the beast prophecy.
DigitalAngel.net, Inc. is a subsidiary of ADS. Its president, Dr.
Peter Zhou, is also the chief scientist for the computer chip implant device. In an interview with WorldNetDaily.com he
responded to concerns from the Christian community. “I am a
Christian, but I don’t think [that argument] makes sense. The
purpose of the device is to save your life and improve the quality
of life. There’s no connection to the Bible.”
In comparing Digital Angel to pacemakers, he said,
“Pacemakers used to be seen as bizarre, but now they are part of
everyday life. Digital Angel will be received the same way. A few
years ago there may have been resistance, but not anymore.
People are getting used to having implants.”
ADS President Richard Sullivan added, “No one will be forced
to wear Digital Angel. We live in a voluntary society.”
When a true global economy is finally established, which will
not be long from now, the Christian community may want to revoice its concerns. If this Digital Angel technology falls under the
control of the New World Order’s global economy, Christians
should indeed be speaking loudly at that time.
It would be of interest to note that a special Technology
Pioneers Award was recently given to Applied Digital Systems
from the World Economic Forum for its contributions to “worldwide economic development and social progress through
technology advancements.” Global economy planners apparently
see the potential of Digital Angel for the future global economy.
And that’s scary! ❏
Another headache that technology
has given the governments of the world
is free speech. The Internet is a big, wide
super-information highway that transmits any kind of message quickly and
efficiently—including politically-incorrect ones. It’s cheap, it’s anonymous and
totalitarian systems don’t like it too
much. But they can’t stop it.
They can, however, control it.
Got the picture? Good. Now let’s look
at the prophecy.
Revelation 13:16-17 describes an
endtime cashless society. In it, nobody
will be allowed to buy or sell unless he
has some sort of mark. This mark will be
a person’s entry ticket into the economy.
An economy is a place where you buy
and sell things — like food, for instance.
The context of the chapter tells us that
this economy will be a global economy,
and the mark—well, the mark will not
be good. It’s called the mark of the beast,
and the beast—well, the beast will be the
leader of a global government. In fact,

out if they don’t have the password. The
password will be a number, and you will
only be issued your number by agreeing
to play by the rules of the New World
Order. Unfortunately for Bible-believing
Christians, the rules will require taking
an unbiblical oath that will, in effect,
deny Jesus as your exclusive Lord and
Savior. This is the reason why taking the
mark of the beast will result in eternal
damnation.
What will the mark be like? The Bible
says it could be a mark, or it could be the
name of the beast, or it may even be the
number of his name. And that number
will be 666.
How will one calculate the number of
someone’s name to be 666? We don’t
know at this time. Revelation 13:18 says
it will take wisdom. “Here is wisdom. Let
him that hath understanding count the
number of the beast: for it is the number
of a man; and his number is Six hundred
threescore and six.”
It is apparent from the prophecies that
the governments of this world will
choose to exercise intrusive measures
upon the emerging computerized cashless society. If you want to play the game,
you’ll have to get your number.
Mythological, you say? Try getting a job
without a social security number. Try
opening a bank account. Try buying land
or getting a dentist to fix your teeth.
Welcome to the 21st Century, where
myths become realities.
A cashless society is a technological
inevitability. It’s already in place. Will
the government control this cashless society? That, too, is inevitable. They’re
already working on it.
It’s time to slap on your Nikes, grab
your sword and start spreading the Good
News. You’re running out of time. ❏

Many have stated that it is impossible to know whether or not we are living in the last days before the second coming of Jesus Christ. However, below you will find dramatic proof that this is the last times. All of the proofs below taken together defy coincidence. 1. EUPHRATES RIVER TO BE DRIED UP: In Revelation 16:12, the Bible predicts that the Euphrates River will be dried up to prepare the way for the kings of the east to invade Israel. This will happen at the time of the battle of Armageddon according to verse 16 of the same chapter. The battle of Armageddon will be the final battle at which time Jesus Christ will return and fight on the side of the nation of Israel. Immediately thereafter He will establish His kingdom and usher in His 1000-year reign of peace. On January 13th, 1990, the Indianapolis Star carried the headline “Turkey will cut off flow of Euphrates for 1 month.” The article stated that a huge reservoir had been built by Turkey. While filling up the reservoir, the flow of the Euphrates would be stopped for one month and a concrete plug for a diversion channel built. These things have now been done. With this newly built dam, Turkey has the ability to stop the Euphrates River at will. The conditions for fulfilling this 1900 year old prophecy are now in place! 2. CHINA GOES TO WAR: In Revelation 9:1516, the Bible prophesies that an army of 200 million soldiers will launch a war which will kill “the third part of men”. Never in the history of the world, until our present generation, has there been a power on earth that could field 200 million soldiers. However, the late ruler of China, Mao Tsetung boasted in his diary that he could field an army of 200 million. We see that this prophecy pertaining to the very last times could not ever have been fulfilled until now. endtime SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 1999 3. WORLDWIDE NUMBERING SYSTEM PREDICTED: In Revelation chapter 13, the Bible prophesies that a world dictator will soon rule over a world government. He will cause all people on the earth to receive a number without which they will be unable to buy or sell. We are seeing this prophecy fulfilled before our eyes in a most astonishing way. Nearly every human being in the world now has been assigned a number. In America it is our social security number. In the last few years we have seen this number extended to small children. A child without a social security number cannot be declared as a dependent on an income tax return. We have seen the emergence of electronic money, shopping with credit cards, and many people are urging the abolishment of cash. All of these things could not possibly have been fulfilled until this present time. Only after the invention of the computer could such a worldwide numbering system be administered. 4. THE EMERGENCE OF A NEW WORLD ORDER: Revelation 13:7 and Daniel 7:23 prophesy the establishment of a world government. We recently have seen the term “new world order” being used by the leading political people of our world. Mikhail Gorbachev has made the term famous, and Pope John Paul II has referred to it repeatedly. Finally our former President, George Bush, in the Chicago Tribune, September 12, 1990, said “Iraq is the first test for the new world order.” He stated emphatically that the Iraq War is Saddam Hussein against the world. The United Nations troops are continually referred to as the multi-national forces. The decision has been made to establish an interdependent community of nations that will rule the world under United Nations authority. The Bible says that this will lead us into a great world government. We can see this happening right before our eyes. COINCIDENCE OR DIVINE PROVIDENCE? The Euphrates River can be dried up, the necessary 200 million man army is available, a worldwide numbering system is possible because of the computer, and now the new world order is appearing. Is it coincidental that all of these major prophecies pertaining to the last times are being fulfilled simultaneously? Hardly!

I came upon something that I may be misunderstanding concerning the Ten Nation Union. I don’t have too much knowledge concerning biblical prophecy, but I am trying to improve in this area. You stated in Chapter 1 that Great Britain applied for membership to the European Common Market. If the lion is supposed to represent Great Britain and Great Britain is a member of the European Common Market, isn’t Great Britain being represented twice on the beast; once as the head of the lion and once as a horn on the ten-horned beast? Could you please explain this to me? Tonight, I was sitting around discussing the PalestinianJewish issues that are left to be resolved. I couldn’t believe it, but some of them were citing the Jewish people as the trouble. They said that the Jews never had Jerusalem in their possession at any time. They contended that, before the 1948 War, Palestinians lived there and called Jerusalem their city. Is this true? He also said the Moslems were planning on building a temple on the site next to the Dome of the Rock. Have you heard anything about this? Thank you, C. Jones Plainfield, IN Reply: When you refer to Britain being represented twice, I think you are referring to the seven-headed ten-horned beast of Revelation 13. It does have the mouth of the lion and the ten horns of the tenhorned kingdom. If the European Union (formerly called the Common Market) is the ten-horn kingdom and if Britain remains a member in the European Union, then Britain would then be mentioned twice in this passage. In the Daniel 7 prophecy, the ten-horned beast is described as being the last kingdom to arise. This could explain why Britain is duplicated. It is also very possible that the European Union will not end up being the ten-nation union. This must be considered since the European Union now has fifteen members and is negotiating to add more. The Jews possessed Jerusalem from 1004 BC, when King David conquered it, until 70 AD when the Romans conquered the city and drove the Jews out. When Jews began to return to Israel in the early 1900’s, it is my understanding that they bought the lands and homes from the people living there. When the United Nations partitioned the Holy Land between Jews and Palestinians in 1947, the UN declared that Jerusalem was to be an international city under UN administration. The Arabs refused to accept this decision and launched a war against Israel. The control of Jerusalem has been determined by war from that time until this. Negotiations are presently underway to determine the final status of Jerusalem. The deadline that has been set to achieve an agreement on final status is September 13, 2000. These negotiations ultimately will not suc6 endtime MAY/JUNE 2000 ceed. We know this because the Bible prophesies that the world’s final battle, Armageddon, will be fought over control of Jerusalem. The report you received about the Arabs building a temple north of the Dome of the Rock is not true. They would never initiate such an action. There has been talk about the Jews building a temple there. It appears that this is what will happen. “Sorcery” refers to witchcraft The scripture says in Revelation 18:23, “...for by thy sorceries were all the nations deceived.” What do you believe that is referring to? I understand “sorcery” in the scripture is referring to drugs. Please respond as soon as possible. Sincerely, S. Laughlin Ft. Worth, TX Reply: The word sorcery refers to witchcraft and mysticism. Chapters 17 and 18 of Revelation prophesy of the Vatican. When in Rome several years ago, our Roman Catholic guide told us that the word Vatican meant the hill of the magicians and the soothsayers. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing! I knew that this scripture said the Vatican would be filled with sorceries, but until then I didn’t know that this was the literal meaning of “Vatican.” “Unity” and the One-World Religion I’m writing to find out what you think about unity. All of the world, even Pope John Paul II, is calling for the unity of Catholics, Buddhists, Muslims, etc. Could it be possible that the first beast of Revelation 13:3 is Pope John Paul II? The scripture says one of the heads of the beast was wounded as it were unto death. Could the wound be the assassination attempt made on the pope’s life in the 80’s that left a mark and was healed? Could it be that the image in Revelation 14:11 is speaking about the statue of the Virgin Mary? C. Connelly St. Petersburg, FL Reply: The drive toward unity that we are witnessing in our world is the formation of the one-world government and the oneworld religious system that is prophesied in scripture. True Christians should have no part in it. The first beast of Revelation 13 symbolizes the coming global political leader, the Antichrist, and his world government. The second beast in Revelation 13 represents the False Prophet, the personage that will be the religious partner of the Antichrist. The political leader has been from Europe and the religious leader has always been the pope of Rome. It seems almost certain that the final head of the Holy Roman Empire will be no different. If Pope John Paul II is to fill the role of the False Prophet, events will have to move very quickly. He will soon be eighty years old. It is interesting that Pope John Paul II has venerated Mary more than any other pope. Taking the “Mark of the Beast” accidentally I really enjoy reading your Endtime Magazines. They are so true on what is happening in this crazy world. I have already finished your book, A Message for the President. It really explained a lot to me that I would have never figured out on my own. My family and I are praying for your ministry. I am using the Understanding the Endtime manual as a witnessing tool. I have two Bible studies already. If one person will hear the gospel and be saved, it will be worth everything. Anyway, one of the men in my Bible study wanted to know if you could take the Mark of the Beast accidentally and if it would literally be the number 666? Reece Muncie, IN Reply: Daniel 12:10 states concerning the endtime, “...none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.” There will be many people that will accept the mark of the beast without question. That’s the reason it is so important to understand the prophetic events that are unfolding right now. The mark will almost certainly not literally be 666. Revelation 13:18 says, “Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast..." Another passage says the mark will be the name of the beast or the number of his name. There are several things I have decided that I will never do. I will never pledge allegiance to any man except for Jesus Christ. I will never pledge allegiance to the United Nations or any other world government organization. And if the phrase “under God” is ever omitted from the U.S. pledge of allegiance, I will no longer be able to take that pledge. I also will never take a name or number on my body or under my skin. The New Jerusalem is the Church I have gotten a few of your videos and enjoyed them very much. Do you think you could explain what Revelation 22:12 means? I am very interested in Bible prophecy. Thank you. Yours truly, V. Gustafson Portsmouth, RI Some people believe that the New Jerusalem is a physical city. Others contend that it is a symbolic description of the church. I’m not positive whether there will be a literal city or not. But I do know that the New Jerusalem is a description of the church. We are able to know this because of Revelation 21: 9-10, "And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife. And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God.” Notice that the angel promised to show John the Lamb’s wife. Then he showed him the New Jerusalem. Revelation 22:1 describes a pure river of the water of life in the New Jerusalem. In John 4:14, Jesus described this same river of life. "But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” Revelation 22:17 also describes this water of life as a spiritual thing, “And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” Revelation 22:2 speaks of the tree of life bearing twelve manner of fruits. This has to be referring to the fruit of the spirit that is produced by all who become a partaker of the tree of life. Cloning and the Soul You may have already covered the subject of cloning, but would you please cover it again sometime in your magazine? I can see where an animal can be cloned, but I want to know what you think about humans being cloned. The Bible says that the soul of a man goes upward, and the soul of an animal goes downward. I cannot fathom a human being, being cloned, because we have a soul. How could God allow this to happen? I also listen to you on short-wave radio. I value your opinion very much. Sincerely, R. & D. Jackson Internet Reply: If the cloning of a human being actually were accomplished, it would be my opinion that God would still impart to that human being its own unique soul. Al Gore Once Strong joined Annan at the UN, it was decided that a visit to the White House would be in order. The U.S. Congress was refusing to pay close attention to $1 billion in back dues to the UN. This had been done in order to prod the UN into accomplishing the needed reforms. Strong was asked to accompany Annan to the White House in an attempt to obtain payment because Strong had a very close friend in the Clinton administration—Vice-President Al Gore. He asserted that all nations would soon answer to a single global authority. But why should we care at all what Strobe Talbott says? Talbott has been very close to President Clinton for a long time. They were roommates while attending college as Rhodes Scholars in London. When Clinton took office in 1993, one of the first things that he did was to make Strobe Talbott Deputy Secretary of State. Talbott has been the key foreign policy advisor to Clinton throughout his entire administration. So one of the most powerful members of the U.S. State Department believes that United States’ sovereignty is soon to be over! Robert Muller Where in the world does Strobe Talbott come up with these outlandish ideas? It’s interesting to notice that Robert Muller published a book in 1991 titled The Birth of a Global Civilization. In 1992, Talbott wrote his article, “The MAY/JUNE 2000endtime 9

He worked in the UN for thirty-eight years as Assistant UN Secretary-General to three Secretary-Generals—U Thant, Kurt Waldheim and Javier Peres de Cuellar. He wrote so prolifically about the future of the United Nations that he was given the name “Prophet of the UN.” Another of Muller’s books New Genesis-Shaping a Global Spirituality, reveals Muller’s extreme interest in spiritual things. During one conversation that I had with Muller, he stated that the world had gone as far toward unity as politics could carry it. He asserted that total world unity could only be completed by coming together spiritually. That belief is what inspired him to write New Genesis. Another of Muller’s outstanding achievements is the writing of his World Core Curriculum. He authored the World Core Curriculum in order to provide young people with the global education that he felt they need to compete in our increasingly interdependent world. Muller credits the teachings of Alice Bailey and the Tibetan teacher Djwhal Khul for providing the basis for the World Core Curriculum. Alice Bailey Who is this Alice Bailey? In the early 1920’s she founded a publishing company called Lucifer Publishing Company (You may have heard of Lucifer!). Bailey used her “demonic” publishing company to disseminate her radical New Age ideas around the world. Most people were not inclined to seriously consider adopting views produced by Lucifer Publishing. When the negative effects of the company’s name became apparent, Bailey shortened the name to Lucis Trust. Amazingly, Lucis Trust was headquartered at the United Nations Plaza for many years. Recently, it was moved to Wall Street. Djwhal Khul Of this entire mysterious web, the identity of Djwhal Khul is the most bizarre. Djwhal Khul never existed. He was Alice Bailey’s spirit guide. Bishop William Swing Episcopal Diocese of California The men who run the world Bishop William Swing of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, CA is one of the original signers of the United Religions Initiative. He has worked closely with Robert Muller, the “Prophet of the UN”, to bring about a global religious forum patterned after the United Nations. His hope is the URI will do for religion, what the UN has done for the political world. Robert Muller stated to me that he felt it was a pity that the political leaders of the world were able to meet and talk daily at the UN while the spiritual leaders of the world would hardly speak to each other. He pointed out that the constant dialogue, which takes place at the UN, had enabled the world to speak together and act together as the World Community. Muller, the “Prophet of the UN,” believed that an organization should be created that would do for religion what the UN has done for the political world. Since Muller had expressed this idea to me, I was not surprised to hear a couple of years later that the United Religion Initiative had been launched. Robert Muller, employee of the UN for thirtyeight years, was one of the three original signers of the Initiative. Another signer of the original United Religions Initiative was Bishop William Swing, Episcopalian Bishop of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Swing has become the driving force behind the United Religions. He also was one of the speakers at Mikhail Gorbachev’s Global Forum in 1996. Also in 1996, Bishop Swing traveled the world to assess the level of support among the religious leaders of the world for a United Religions effort. He met with the Dalai Lama, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Mother Teresa, the Pope and Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria, the Vatican’s Director of Inter-Religious Dialogue. Some people believe that Cardinal Arinze could become the next pope upon the death of Pope John Paul II. Pope John Paul II Pope John Paul II is very much a player on the world geo-political scene. A Strong Environmentalist Baxter: I first heard your name back in 1992 when you were chairman of the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Tell us a little bit about that particular meeting and what came out of it. Strong: As I mentioned, I have long had this deep interest in nature — the human relationships with nature and how our relationships with each other depend upon and affect nature. So when the United Nations decided to convene its first world conference on the environment in Stockholm, Sweden in 1972, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, at that time U Thant, asked me to come in and become SecretaryGeneral of that conference. That means to manage the conference process itself. That was in 1970. The conference itself was in 1972. That conference gave rise to, amongst other things, the establishment of the equivalent of a “global Environmental Protection Agency,” called the UN Environment Program. I became the first head of that. I subsequently went back to my own government. Then in 1990, the UN General Assembly decided to convene a new world conference on the environment and development, because the environment and development are closely linked. I was asked to become Secretary-General again. I said that, while happy to help, I think we need a new generation of leadership. It was decided, however, that I should do it. I agreed, and it was a great experience. The conference was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in June 1992. It produced two major treaties. One on bio-diversity and one on climate change. It also produced Agenda 21, which is a program to help insure a sustainable future for the human community in the 21st Century, and a series of principles, which we call the Declaration of Rio. So it ended on a high note. However, the problem, as with so many other international agreements, is that there is no enforcement power at the international level. Governments have done some good things, but on the whole, progress has been much slower that envisaged. And we are still doing the kind of things that are not going to fundamentally get us off of that destructive pathway. Strong Enforcement Baxter: Do you foresee ever being able to enact enforcement mechanisms? Strong: Well, we don’t need enforcement mechanisms from the global level on every little aspect of human life. I am a great believer in the principle of subsidiary, which means that every regulatory or governmental action that has to be taken is taken at the level closest to the people concerned at which it can be managed effectively. On that basis, not everything needs to be done at the global level. But there are some things that can only be done at the global level—the atmosphere, the oceans, and the common areas beyond national jurisdiction for example. No individual government, however powerful, can manage them alone. Yet the condition of those common areas, and I think particularly of climate change, the atmosphere, carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas content of the atmosphere, is something that is determined by actions that happen all over the world. People can draw a border on the ground to separate their country from another, but they can’t draw a border in the atmosphere. The atmosphere is everybody’s atmosphere. What people do to it helps or hurts everyone. So there are issues of that kind — climate change and protecting the sources of bio-diversity around the world. These are the key to earth’s life systems. Many of them require a degree of international cooperation that no government can enforce. Of course, the mechanism for doing this is our treaties and conventions. We have a whole system now of conventions and treaties; however, we have very, very limited enforcement mechanisms. I have to say I am a great admirer of America as the most powerful country in the world—a country that has given us such a great example of law and order and democracy. But Americans need to remind themselves that their government has not always practiced what it preaches on the international level. Some undertakings that it makes, which are in international law and treaty commitments, frankly aren’t always adhered to. Now when the greatest country of the world doesn’t abide by its international commitments, that certainly doesn’t make it very conducive to other countries pursuing and following their E-mail: endtime@endtime.com, Website: http://www.endtime.com

I am convinced that the ordinary American does not realize the degree to which the U.S does not adhere to some of the international laws and treaties. Now, of course, America is not doing that across the board. In many cases the U.S. is in the lead in these things. But as the most powerful country in the world, the point I am making is not so much criticizing the U.S., but reminding Americans that what they do or fail to do makes a vast amount of difference. Until the U.S. gets solidly behind the consistent and fair enforcement of international agreements, it is going to be very, very hard to develop an enforceable system of international law, which is absolutely essential to our future. A Strong Friendship with Gorbachev Baxter: Maurice, I find myself with questions bubbling to the top of my mind, because you are such a wealth of information. Out of the Earth Summit at Rio de Janeiro where you were the chairman, there was an organization born called Green Cross International. Mikhail Gorbachev became the president of that organization. Tell me, how does a man go from being the dynamic, charismatic, and world-dominating leader that Mikhail Gorbachev was, to the totally different venue of environmentalism? What is going on in the heart and mind of Mikhail Gorbachev? real interest in the environment and his interest in spirituality. What interested me while he was still in office was to see the number of times that he mentioned the importance of spiritual life, of spirituality. He didn’t talk about religion, but he talked about spirituality. Later, as I got to know him, it was quite clear that he has a real spiritual orientation. It is also clear that he had a deep interest in the environmental issue, both personally and in the sense of being one of the early people amongst world leaders to recognize its importance to world peace and security, as well as the future of humanity. between us as human beings and the larger forces that created us, which regulate our life and into which we ultimately return. Baxter: Robert Muller wrote a book called, New Genesis: Toward A Global Spirituality. He and I discussed this point when he was on our program. We were talking about the fact that the world had been brought together as far as it could be brought together politically through the United Nations. He felt the need for something beyond that — a global spirituality that could pull nations together. How is that going to be enacted? Strong: Well, first of all we have to recognize those basic spiritual concepts and moral and ethical values which do have a universal degree of validity, and an almost virtual universal degree of acceptance. Compare these spiritual concepts with the ones that divide people because they involve different religious interpretations. My own belief is that there is an innate universal spirituality that links people. People strive to express it in the best way possible, and in doing so, they go on different pathways; but they are still heading for the same mountaintop. We have tried to distill the essence of these in what we call the Earth Charter. This is the movement started by Mikhail Gorbachev and me as a result of the Earth Summit in Rio, where I had proposed to the governments in attendance that they should adopt an Earth Charter. The Earth Charter is basically a statement of ethical and moral principles designed to guide the behavior of human beings towards each other and towards the earth. It is intended to shape a secure and sustainable future for humankind. The governments weren’t quite ready for it. They did agree on a Declaration of Principles, but it didn’t go nearly as far as we had expected. Following Rio, and then after Mr. Gorbachev left office, we joined to undertake a people’s movement to produce a People’s Earth Charter. Literally millions of people throughout the world have been involved in that process. We have developed a Charter now, which is the product of widespread consultations and dialogue amongst vastly different My own belief is that there is an innate universal spirituality that links people. Strong: Well, you will have to go to Mikhail Gorbachev to find out what is going on in his mind and heart. However, I can tell you what I see, as a friend of his and as one who has been privileged to work with him and know him. We are joint chairpersons of the Earth Charter Initiative. This is an initiative of his Green Cross Organization and the organization of which I am the chair, the Earth Council. The Earth Council also emerged from the Earth Summit Conference in Rio. While Gorbachev was still Secretary-General of the Communist party and President of the Soviet Union, you could read in his many statements some first clues as to his Global Spirituality & The Earth Charter Baxter: When you speak of spirituality, can you describe what that means in a global context? Strong: Well, everyone will have his own definition, but I define spirituality as that set of forces which links us to the source of all life in the cosmos. People define it in different ways, through religions and through philosophies. But these people have joined in identifying those universal spiritual, moral and ethical values that they can all sign onto and that they believe are essential. This will enable us to cooperate in securing a future for all of us. Now, after three years of intensive dialogue and consultations, we have just agreed on the Earth Charter. It happened in March, in Paris, at UNESCO Headquarters. The Earth Charter is not a statement written in stone. It is a product of widespread consultation. It articulates these universal values and principles, but it is not designed as a document for people to sign onto. Rather it is to serve as a focal point for them to examine their own hearts and souls. They should examine their own life priorities in relation to the Earth Charter and the principles that it articulates. They should look at those principles in terms of how they apply in their own communities, their own organizations, and how they apply in their own national life. Then we hope to stimulate that kind of educational and dialogue process throughout the world. Then in 2002, on the 10th Anniversary of the Rio Earth Summit and the 30th Anniversary of the original Global Environmental Conference in Stockholm, we expect to submit this as a People’s Earth Charter to the United Nations. We don’t necessarily expect the United Nations to automatically adopt it. They will hopefully give it blessing, but it will stand on the authority of the millions of people around the world who have helped to design it and who have helped to make it a centerpiece of our universal moral and spiritual life. That is where it will derive its authority from, and it is well on its way to that now. Baxter: Maurice, we have interviewed Hans Kung on this program. He wrote a book called A Global Ethic for the Global Politic and the Global Economic. He also wrote a document called “Towards a Global Ethic,” which was adopted by the Parliament of the World’s Religions in 1993. I also know that Bishop William Swing plans to have the Charter signing of the United Religions Initiative on June 26th of this year. Have these religious leaders had any input into the Earth Charter? 16 endtime MAY/JUNE 2000 An ecological agenda Ecological security did not become a U.N. concern until the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment in 1972. The Earth Charter is the first worldwide campaign addressing the interrelated problems of poverty, conflict, social injustice and environmental degradation. EARTH CHARTER TIMELINE 1987 The World Commission on Environment and Development (Brundtland Commission) recommends the creation of a universal declaration on environmental protection and sustainable development. 1992 An Earth Charter is placed on the agenda for the Earth Summit, but governments fail to reach agreement. Instead, the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development is adopted. 1992 Creation of the Earth Council to promote and advance the implementation of the Earth Summit agreements. 1994 A new Earth Charter initiative is launched under the leadership of Maurice Strong, the Secretary General of the UNCED, and Mikhail Gorbachev, the president of Green Cross International. 1995 The Earth Council and Green Cross International, with support from the Dutch government, begin the task of developing a people’s Earth Charter to be presented to the United Nations by 2000. 1996 The Earth Council initiates the Earth Charter Consultation in preparation for the Rio+5 Forum. 1997 The Earth Charter Commission is formed and convenes at the Rio+5 Forum. A Benchmark Draft is released as a "document in progress." 1998-1999 Groups from some 45 countries join the Earth Charter initiative. 1999 Benchmark Draft II of the Earth Charter is released in April. 2000 The Earth Charter Commissioners convene in France to ratify the latest version of the document and to endorse The Earth Charter Campaign. 2000 The official launch of The Earth Charter Dialogues and Media Campaign is scheduled for June at The Hague Peace Palace. Strong: Very much so. They have been very much involved. It has not been confined to religious leaders only, but they have been very influential indeed. This coming August, just before the special millennium session of the UN General Assembly, there will be a Millennium Peace Summit of Religious & Spiritual Leaders convened in New York, involving spiritual and religious leaders from throughout the world. The Earth Charter will be an important agenda centerpiece. Baxter: So is it possible that the United Religions Organization may well lend their influence and maybe even the Parliament of the World’s Religions. This could become a document for people to rally around. Strong: Absolutely! We have to be clear though. It is not another piece of sacred writ. It is simply a statement of ethical, moral and spiritual principles. It has come about through a very spiritually exciting process. It should be used as a focal point of education for reflection for action for determining how we can reorient our own actions and our own lives in the places that we have influence around these basic principles. Clinton wanted UN reform. Consequently, Kofi Annan became our Secretary-General of the United Nations and appointed you as the Under-Secretary in charge of UN reform. Can you give us an overview of what the goals are of this effort? How is it progressing? Where are we right now? Strong: First of all let me be historically correct here. I was, in fact, directly in charge under the Secretary-General of his UN reform program. I have now moved to an advisory role and have undertaken to reform a particular UN institution, which is the University for Peace in Costa Rica, where I am speaking to you from today. The U.S. had been pressing for reform. That is true. But the U.S. wasn’t the only one. People in the UN wanted reform. Usually people in organizations know when they need to be changed even though sometimes they resist the change. So the U.S. wasn’t the only one. This certainly wasn’t President Clinton’s intention, but some elements in the U.S. wanted the UN to reform primarily to reduce its cost. Of course that is a worthy goal in itself, but it is not a sufficient reason for reform. The UN and its various institutions were created just after WWII and in the aftermath of that war. Their composition largely reflects the conditions that existed at that time. Those conditions have changed immensely. We have now over 185 members in the UN, most of them from the developing world. Very few developing countries were even there when the UN was created. They were colonies and therefore, not represented. So the world has changed, and it is only normal that the institutions that reflect that would have to adjust accordingly. Kofi Annan, as Secretary-General, came into his job knowing that, having more experience in the organization than any SecretaryGeneral has ever had. Kofi Annan grew up in the UN. Nobody knew the UN better. So he was able not just to respond to the President’s call, but to respond to the basic need for reform, which he, himself, understood as well as anybody. He decided, and I think quite realistically, that he had to undertake reform on two separate pathways. On the first tract, he took care of those things that were under his control as the chief executive officer. Tract two represented those very fundamental reforms which the Secretary-General was not able to undertake on his own. These he could only recommend to governments, because only governments could undertake those. It is interesting to observe that even those governments who keep calling for reform are reluctant to undertake fundamental reform themselves. Virtually every single thing on tract one that was under the authority of the different departments and organizations of the UN and consolidating them into five executive decision-making structures. And consolidating different agencies where the UN functions. The UN is a big family. There are a lot of different organizations, and they often act individually. We have brought them together into a common UN house, having them work cooperatively, and thereby improving both their effectiveness as well as sharing costs and efficiencies. Taxing Matters Baxter: What lies ahead to be done? Strong: Well, the biggest single reforms must be undertaken by governments. For example, the Secretary-General recommended that a number of committees and governing bodies be consolidated, and some of them actually removed. None of that has been done, and none of it can be done by the Secretary-General. He can only recommend. These actions, of course, would not only improve costs, but would also improve effectiveness. Or providing some basis where the veto could be overridden in the General Assembly by a two-thirds majority.” On getting the U.S. to surrender sovereignty: “No nation has to surrender sovereignty. Almost nobody is against it. And by the way, it’s prophesied in the Bible. Money has become a relic of the past. May we please have a moment of silence? Your usefulness has come and gone. You are leaving this cold, cruel world and being replaced by a string of ones and zeroes. We will miss you. What is cash, anyway? When you sell something, you get it. When you buy something, you give it. Cash is what you hold onto between acts of selling and buying. Why do you accept it from people? It’s because you believe that cash has a value and that everyone recognizes this value. Why do people take it from you? Because they believe it has a value, too. Cash is what you temporarily hold onto between sales and purchases. How much time does a person hold onto cash these days? Not much. With the invention of the computer, the Internet, smart cards and other technological advances, the amount of time a person needs interim cash is approaching nil. Cash is quickly becoming unnecessary. In fact, the only reason it’s really still around is because the masses aren’t ready to part with it completely— yet. Living in a cashless society has many obvious benefits. Convenience, safety, reduced crime and cost savings are but a few. What’s not to like? Ask the government. They have some major problems with the emerging cashless society. You see, the technologies are 18 endtime MAY/JUNE 2000 Is the cashless society closer than we think? coming together in a way that is enabling individuals and corporations to move their money to any place in the world, at the speed of light, and (here’s the kicker) without the knowledge of Big Brother. And what Big Brother doesn’t know, Big Brother can’t tax. The ramifications are clear. The government’s very existence is being threatened, and the government knows it. Their traditional methods of tracing the financial activities of citizens and criminals alike are coming to an end. It’s a new day. Technology has passed them by. What will Big Brother do? Government has two choices. First, it can hope for its citizens to voluntarily come forth with all of the information needed in order to levy its taxes. Sure. Their second option is to take a stroll down Intrusion Boulevard. They can attempt to compile a detailed record of every financial transaction for every person in the country. Bringing this all together, the prophecy states that, in order to gain entry into the coming global economy, a person will have to take on the mark of Satan. This, for obvious reasons, will result in eternal damnation. After all, it’s what one should expect for taking on the mark of Satan. The prophecy reads like this: “And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.” It is more than a coincidence that we are living today on the brink of a global cashless society. A worldwide economic system is being established, as we speak, that will have the ability to lock people ver since the patent rights for “Digital Angel” were acquired late last year by Applied Digital Systems of Palm Beach, Florida, many in the Christian community have been alarmed that this product will become the mechanism used by the Antichrist to fulfill the mark of the beast prophecy. We live in a voluntary society.” When a true global economy is finally established, which will not be long from now, the Christian community may want to revoice its concerns. If this Digital Angel technology falls under the control of the New World Order’s global economy, Christians should indeed be speaking loudly at that time. It would be of interest to note that a special Technology Pioneers Award was recently given to Applied Digital Systems from the World Economic Forum for its contributions to “worldwide economic development and social progress through technology advancements.” Global economy planners apparently see the potential of Digital Angel for the future global economy. And that’s scary! ❏ Another headache that technology has given the governments of the world is free speech. The Internet is a big, wide super-information highway that transmits any kind of message quickly and efficiently—including politically-incorrect ones. It’s cheap, it’s anonymous and totalitarian systems don’t like it too much. But they can’t stop it. They can, however, control it. Got the picture? Good. Now let’s look at the prophecy. Revelation 13:16-17 describes an endtime cashless society. In it, nobody will be allowed to buy or sell unless he has some sort of mark. This mark will be a person’s entry ticket into the economy. An economy is a place where you buy and sell things — like food, for instance. The context of the chapter tells us that this economy will be a global economy, and the mark—well, the mark will not be good. It’s called the mark of the beast, and the beast—well, the beast will be the leader of a global government. In fact, 20 endtime MAY/JUNE 2000 out if they don’t have the password. The password will be a number, and you will only be issued your number by agreeing to play by the rules of the New World Order. Unfortunately for Bible-believing Christians, the rules will require taking an unbiblical oath that will, in effect, deny Jesus as your exclusive Lord and Savior. This is the reason why taking the mark of the beast will result in eternal damnation. What will the mark be like? The Bible says it could be a mark, or it could be the name of the beast, or it may even be the number of his name. And that number will be 666. How will one calculate the number of someone’s name to be 666? We don’t know at this time. Revelation 13:18 says it will take wisdom. “Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.” It is apparent from the prophecies that the governments of this world will choose to exercise intrusive measures upon the emerging computerized cashless society. If you want to play the game, you’ll have to get your number. Mythological, you say? Try getting a job without a social security number. Try opening a bank account. Try buying land or getting a dentist to fix your teeth. Welcome to the 21st Century, where myths become realities. A cashless society is a technological inevitability. It’s already in place. Will the government control this cashless society? That, too, is inevitable. They’re already working on it. It’s time to slap on your Nikes, grab your sword and start spreading the Good News. What words could possibly be used to say that one-third of the world’s population, two billion people, will soon be snuffed out by a fiery nuclear exchange? How could a person say these things and remain credible? I’m not sure there is a way. The prophecy doesn’t lie However, the scripture is right there staring back at us off the pages of Revelation 9:15-16. “And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men. Freeman Jr., a former assistant secretary of defense and retired American diplomat with long experience in China. “While the clash may not be imminent,” Freeman said, “it’s very likely the U.S. and China are going to have a war over this issue.” Freeman’s statement was published in The Washington Post, March 16, 2000, in an article headlined “Experts Debate Likelihood of a U.S.-China Clash.” “CIA Predicts Military Confrontation in the Straits in 2000”—Central Intelligence Agency Director George Tenet warned that a military confrontation in the Taiwan Strait was likely this year because of Taiwan’s presidential election in March and related talk of independence for the island. Tenet made his comments when he delivered his annual global threat-assessment report to the Senate Intelligence Committee on Wednesday, February 3, 2000. (China News Digest, February 7, 2000) USA Today on March 15, 2000, “There is going to be a military confrontation,” predicted Charles W. Freeman Jr. summed it up this way, “A conflict is inevitable because the Taiwanese won’t reunify with communist China, and Beijing won’t settle for anything less.” How did we arrive at this dangerous juncture? China has stated repeatedly over the last fifty years that there is one China and that Taiwan is a renegade province of that one China. She has insisted that someday Taiwan must reunite with the Mainland. However, it appeared that the uneasy co-existence between Taiwan and the Chinese Dragon just 100 miles away might be allowed to continue until someday it would hopefully just work itself out. Since 1972, the United States government has assented to this “One China” policy—with one condition. The projected reunification must be done through peaceful diplomacy, not through war. Congress passed the Taiwan Relations Act in 1979, which obligated the U.S. to supply Taiwan with the necessary military equipment to defend herself against invasion. The turning point came in 1996 when Taiwan held its first democratic elections. The last thing the communist dictatorship on the Mainland wanted was for the dreaded disease of democracy to take root in China, and the Mainland insisted that Taiwan was an inseparable part of China. In an attempt to scare Taiwan out of holding the elections, China fired missiles just off the coast of Taiwan while at the same time threatening invasion. President Clinton sent two aircraft carriers and 100,000 troops into the Straits of Taiwan. China was forced to back down. Beijing is prepared for a nuclear war against the United States if Washington “would dare to stand in the way” of China’s reunification, a military-backed weekly has warned. It would even be possible for China to form a military alliance with Russia, and perhaps India, the article said. It also warned Japan not to provide logistical support to the U.S. military in a Sino-U.S. war over Taiwan. If they did, Beijing would see it as Tokyo's declaration of war against China and then Japan would become part of the battlefield. China took delivery of the first Sovremenny in February of 2000 and is scheduled to receive the other one later this year. In the meantime, another event contributed to the escalation of tensions across the Straits of Taiwan. Negotiations for the eventual reunification of Taiwan with the Mainland were scheduled to begin in August of 1999. In July of 1999, Taiwan’s President Lee attempted to establish Taiwan’s position on a German talk radio show. He stated that China should negotiate with Taiwan on a state-to-state basis. Chinese leaders went ballistic. They protested that Lee’s statement was a de facto declaration of independence and was therefore a cause for war unless it was retracted. President Lee stood firm and no retraction was forthcoming. China immediately began to threaten invasion of Taiwan. In August, a secret paper was issued to Chinese military officers instructing them to prepare for war with Taiwan and the United States. In September, Chinese forces conducted a mock invasion of Taiwan. During the exercise, troops chanted, “We will liberate Taiwan.” On October 1, 1999, China held a huge parade in Tiananmen Square commemorating the 50-year anniversary of the communist takeover in China. Intercontinental ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads capable of reaching the United States were displayed in the parade. Soldiers carried a huge banner in the parade that read, “We will not wait forever to liberate Taiwan.” Then came all the threats and counter-threats during the Taiwanese election campaign. With the election of pro-independence candidate Chen Shuibian, China has suddenly been thrown into a quandary. Does she make good on her threats to invade or should she continue to depend on diplomacy to pursue the unification of Taiwan to the Mainland? The latest position taken by China is that they will wait to see what President Chen says in his May 20 inaugural speech and what he does. They say that, if reunification talks do not begin within a few months, they will invade Taiwan. President-elect Chen has been very careful about making any statement that might anger the Chinese. The last thing Taiwan wants is war with the Mainland. Yet he has refused to agree to the one China policy that China says must be accepted in order to avert war. So what will happen? We all would like to believe that cooler heads will prevail and that tensions between Taiwan and China will dissipate. However, the prophecy of Revelation 9:15-16 and the opinion of the secular experts seem to indicate just the opposite. It seems certain that we are headed straight toward the most horrific war ever experienced by the human race. The government would almost certainly resist severing the link altogether, but senior figures think other religions should have a greater role in national life, just as representatives of other faiths are to be given seats in the House of Lords along with Anglican bishops. The Church of England is itself considering ways to be more “inclusive.” The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. George Carey, is reported to have told an audience in his diocese that he expects the church one day to have its status and privileges reduced. A smart card has just been developed that can verify its owner through fingerprint verification or iris recognition. It is being called e-purse. The smart card is based on a technology known as biometrics, and was developed by Keyware Technologies as a way to combat fraud and other security issues. The biometrics can be used in conjunction with PINs (personal identification numbers) and passwords and, according to the company, cannot be duplicated by impostors. Albright Plays Environmentalism Card U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright has found another platform from which to promote global governance — water. She struck this environmental chord in a speech in Singapore on Earth Day, April 11, when she proposed the creation of a global water security alliance. “The goals of our alliance must be to dramatically improve the management of transboundary water resources, eliminate water as a source of regional instability and use cooperation on water as a basis for bringing nations together on other issues,” Albright said. Albright is aware that water is one of the major issues in the Middle East peace process. Israel has it. The Palestinians don’t. Understanding the symbolic impact of entering the new millennium, he decided to make the trip in the Year 2000. His stated goal for this pilgrimage was to promote ecumenism and Interfaithism. In the twilight years of his life, he would like to be a catalyst for religious unity. His plan was to emphasize the things that Muslims, Jews and Christians have in common. To do this, Pope John Paul planned to begin his journeys by travelling to Ur of Chaldees, the birthplace of Abraham. All three religions revere Abraham as the father of the faithful. John Paul’s plan was detoured when Saddam Hussein refused entry into Iraq where Ur of Chaldees is located. Not to be deterred, the Pope arranged for a virtual tour of the birthplace of Abraham via video. The second leg of Pope John Paul II’s plan took him to Egypt and Mt. Sinai. Jews, Muslims and Christians all believe that Moses was given the law there. They also all look to Moses as a prophet. During all these travels, the message had been emphasized continuously— Jews, Muslims and Christians all worship the same God through their common origin—Abraham. Finally, came the Holy Land itself. It was shocking that the Pope would make such a declaration just a month before heading to Israel. Yet Pope John Paul II has always felt that the Catholic Church should have a voice in the control of Jerusalem. One thing makes this move very interesting. Scripture teaches plainly that the person who is pope at the time of the Antichrist will be the False Prophet. The Antichrist and the False Prophet will ultimately make war against Jerusalem at Armageddon. This makes it very interesting that the Pope felt compelled to sign the pact against Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem. Marching Toward Armageddon: Present status of Mideast peace negotiations When the Sharm el-Sheik agreement was signed between Israel and the Palestinians on September 4, 1999, the date for a framework agreement on final status issues was set for January 13, 2000. When it became obvious that the January 13th date was going to be missed, a new date in May was agreed upon. Now negotiators are saying it might be June before the framework agreement can be completed. The hope is that by September 13, 2000, a comprehensive agreement can be reached on all remaining issues. These include the final status of the City of Jerusalem and final borders between Israel and a yet-to-be-established Palestinian state. Two major issues Two major sticking points remain in the negotiations: 1. What will happen to the Jews that have settled in the West Bank since the 1967 War? 2. Who will ultimately control Jerusalem? Settlements in the West Bank One hundred forty-four settlements have been established in the West Bank by Israel since the Six-Day War of 1967. Somewhere between 140,000 and 180,000 Jews presently live in these areas. These settlements are not composed of tents or trailers that can be easily disbanded. Some of them are beautiful towns of ten to twenty thousand 30 endtime MAY/JUNE 2000 population. Many of the homes there are valued at between $100,000 and $500,000 each. The Palestinians contend that every one of these settlements must be turned over to Palestinian control. They insist that Jewish residents will have to make a choice to either abandon their homes and move to Israel, or live in the newly created Palestinian state under Palestinian control. Israel says that she is unwilling to abandon many of these settlements and that they must remain under Israeli control. “More wars have been fought over Jerusalem, forty in all, than over any other city on the face of the earth.” Future of Jerusalem Dispute over Jerusalem is not a new thing. More wars have been fought over Jerusalem, forty in all, than over any other city on the face of the earth. The Jewish people disagree on almost everything. But there is one thing on which 95% of Israelis agree—Jerusalem must never be divided or shared. It must be Israel’s capital and remain under Israeli sovereignty forever. On the other hand, the Palestinians are adamant that they must have at least East Jerusalem for the capital of their Palestinian State. They insist that the Temple Mount must remain under Palestinian control and that a Jewish temple can never be built there. These two positions are diametrically opposed to each other. That’s the reason the Mideast peace negotiations continue to be so difficult. What is prophesied to happen? In Matthew 24:15-21, Jesus prophesied that those living in Judea during the times right before His coming would have to run for their lives or be slaughtered. Judea is the area where a large part of the settlements are located. He said “Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes…For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.” This prophecy seems to indicate that most of the settlements will be given to Palestinian control. Apparently, many Jews will choose to remain in their settlements, even as the dangers escalate. As Jesus said, this will result in terrible times for those who do choose to remain. An agreement on the settlements may prove to be possible. But what about Jerusalem? There appears to be no hope for solving the Jerusalem conflict. The Jews don’t intend to share it, and Arafat says there will be no peace unless they do. What does the Bible tell us about what will happen to Jerusalem? Zechariah 14:2 indicates that Jerusalem will be the issue over which the Battle of Armageddon will be fought. This will take place at least seven years from now—maybe more. This lets us know that the Jerusalem issue is not going to be permanently resolved. It will ultimately explode in the world’s face. Apparently Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak realizes that an agreement on Jerusalem is not possible at this time. He recently offered to give the Palestinians 90% of the West Bank if they would agree to postpone for several years dealing with Jerusalem. This “trial balloon” sent up by Barak apparently did not fly with the Palestinians. Their negotiators rejected it immediately. However, don’t be too sure this won’t yet occur. It appears to reflect the course that the Bible prophesies will, in fact, take place. If 90% of the West Bank is given to Palestinian control and the Jerusalem issue put on hold, this would explain the prophesied conflagration in Judea and the continuing festering of the Jerusalem issue until the time of Armageddon. ❏ E-mail: endtime@endtime.com, Website: http://www.endtime.com
