An upper GI endoscopy or EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) is a procedure to diagnose and treat problems in your upper gastrointestinal tract( esophagus, stomach and first half of duodenum).. A patient may be fully conscious or sedated during the procedure.This procedure is done using a long, flexible tube called an endoscope. The tube has a LED light and video camera on one end. The tube is put into your mouth and throat. Then it is slowly pushed through your esophagus and stomach, and into your duodenum. Video images from the tube are seen on a monitor. ERCPs are used diagnostically to detect gallstones, cancer, and other pathologies and to remove stones or lesions or repair narrow ducts. Patients must not eat or drink for 8-10 hours before the exam, which typically lasts 30 minutes to 2 hours. Required supplies include an endoscope, oral anesthetic, contrast media, films, and a C-arm may be used to take images.
