This document provides information about endangered and threatened species. It notes that species are becoming extinct at an alarming rate, with estimates that one fifth of all species will vanish by the end of the century. An endangered species is on the verge of extinction unless rescue steps are taken, while a threatened species is likely to become endangered without habitat and pollution protections. Habitat destruction, overexploitation, invasive species, disease, pollution and limited distributions are reasons for endangerment. Examples of well-known endangered animals include African elephants, bald eagles, black rhinos, blue whales, giant pandas, gorillas and manatees.

4. WHAT IS AN ENDANGERED ANIMAL?
• An endangered animal is one whose species is on the verge of going extinct
unless steps are taken soon to rescue it.
• Pollutants and other threats in its habitat are factors that cause endangerment.
• When an animal becomes extinct, it is gone forever!

5. WHAT IS A THREATENED ANIMAL?
• A threatened animal is one that will likely become endangered unless steps are
taken to reverse habitat destruction and/or pollution.
• These designations are made by a group of biologists who study these animals
and are familiar with their needs and numbers.
