• Anyone who participates in the field
 You'll be expected to write a discourse
analysis
 Choose a discourse community and analyze a
document written for that community
Evidence Based Writing

• Using resources to support
your ideas

• When a writer needs to support
a claim
Why?
• Gives writing credibility
How?
• Using quotes, graphics, and synopsis of
ideas
Where?
• Evidence is found in peer reviewed
journals, textbooks, research data and
online sources
Who?
• Anyone using evidence to support an
argument
 You'll be expected to create a research
plan
 Find and analyze a source that supports your
research topic
Synthesis Writing
What?
• Using several sources to support
a claim

• Summarizing claims found in
research

• Helps to present an idea using
established arguments

• Using multiple sources to formulate
cohesive summary of arguments

• Found throughout a document to
support the thesis

• Anyone asked to research a topic and

 Find and use three sources that support your thesis
Reflective Writing

• Analyzing your own writing process
When?
• Following the completion of a
writing assignment

• To better understand your own
writing

• First describe your writing process and
then analyze what worked for you and
what you should change
Where?
• Can be a formal writing assignment
or kept as your own personal
reflection
Who?
• You, a writer
 You'll be expected to create a course
synopsis presentation and then reflect on
your writing process
 Write a two-page essay detailing your presentation
and sharing your analysis of your work
Writing About Change
What?
• Making an argument for some
adjustment to current beliefs or
practices
When?
• There is no right time to write
about change
Why?
• To teach as well as to learn
How?
• Research an idea, formulate an
opinion, share your findings
Where?
• Books, articles, blogs, academic
papers, social media
Who?
• A writer seeking to learn or teach
 Change is theme used throughout course
 You will discover that change occurs in all aspects of
your academic discourse community
Take a deep breath!
My favorite thing about this course is choosing which topic to focus my research on
and making it relevant to my academic career.
You will be able to select where you will concentrate your efforts and that makes all
the difference in each of these assignments.
