event. From video surveillance to the prevention
of cyber attacks, Cisco’s IP network, the pervasive
multilevel security and a task force dedicated to
monitoring the entire infrastructure allowed the
organizers to concentrate on operational tasks
knowing that the event was in safe hands.
Business growth saw Seeberger needing a

Smart City Lab 6 - Decision Support for your DevicesPeter Waher
For things to be able to make good security decisions in an ad hoc network, it needs support from the infrastructure. We will explore how to provide decision support to devices, allowing their owners to control who are allowed to connect with them, who can read data from them and what type of data, and finally who are allowed to control them and what operations are allowed.
Smart City Lab 3 - Publishing Data from your SensorPeter Waher
In this lab, we will learn how to publish data from a sensor on the Internet, using IEEE IoT Harmonization interfaces. We will experiment with three different communication patterns: Publish/Subscribe, Request/Response and Event Subscription.

Big Data lay at the core of the strong data economy that is emerging in Europe. Although both large enterprises and SMEs acknowledge the potential of Big Data in disrupting the market and business models, this is not reflected in the growth of the data economy. The lack of trusted, secure, ethical-driven personal data platforms and privacy-aware analytics, hinders the growth of the data economy and creates concerns. The main considerations are related to the secure sharing of personal and proprietary/industrial data, and the definition of a fair remuneration mechanism that will be able to capture, produce, release and cash out the value of data, always for the benefit of all the involved stakeholders.
This webinar will focus on how such concerns that pertain to privacy, ethics and intellectual property rights can be tackled, by allowing individuals to take ownership and control of their data and share them at will, through flexible data sharing and fair compensation schemes with other entities (companies or not), as researched by the DataVaults project.

Solution: Block Armour Secure Remote Access for WFHBlock Armour
The Covid-19 pandemic has compelled organizations to allow large sections of the workforce to work from home. A majority of enterprises have deployed a VPN to provide remote access and ensure business continuity. However, traditional VPNs were never designed for today's highly distributed and hybrid IT environments and could expose enterprise applications and sensitive data on the corporate network to malware, ransomware, and other cyberattacks. Learn how Block Armour's #ZeroTrust security solution with integrated 2-factor authentication mitigates the risk of unauthorized access, prevents malware propagation and enables secure and compliant remote access for employees working from home due to Covid-19.
OCRE Workshop: Shaping the Earth Observation Services Market for Research. Session 3: Presentations from DIAS and eoMALL.
This workshop aims to bring the EO service providers closer to the research community, capture their needs and develop fit for purpose EO services.
The event will be the 4th OCRE Requirements Gathering Workshop. Researchers and Earth Observation Service Providers will be asked to provide inputs to help us shape OCRE's tender.
The OCRE project aims to provide the first end-to-end instance of organised, large-scale market pull for EO services in Europe. These services will be provided for free to EU researchers through the European Open Science Cloud. To ensure that the services meet the actual needs of the research community we invite both the demand and the supply side, to share their views and engage in a productive dialogue. Our aim is to capture the needs of EU researchers and inform the EO service providers so that they make available services that effectively address them. We will also explain how the OCRE process will work, how the different stakeholders should be involved and how to make the most of the foreseen benefits.

SAM-IoT: Securing low power device communication in critical infrastructure m...Brain IoT Project
Keynote presented during Eclipse SAM-IoT 2020
In this keynote, we will present an overview of a secure IoT data transmission ecosystem. This overview will be completed with a concrete example of a water management use case from the Brain-IoT project. In this use case, to ensure high trust in the device’s data, we integrated an end-to-end security layer that is compatible with battery-less devices with high constraints in terms of energy, power computation and bandwidth.
FUTEBOL" brings together network experts in Europe and Brazil to create infrastructure for experimental research at the wireless/optical boundary, enabling industry leadership on significant trends in future networks, including virtualization and cell densification.
Water is vital for ensuring food security to the world’s population, and agriculture is the biggest consumer amounting for 70% of freshwater. The water wastages are caused mainly by leakages in distribution and irrigation systems, and in the field application methods.
The most common technique, surface irrigation wastes a high percentage of the water by wetting areas where no plants benefit from it. Localized irrigation can use water more efficiently and effectively, avoiding both under-irrigation and over-irrigation. However, in an attempt to avoid under-irrigation, farmers feed more water than is needed resulting not only to productivity losses, but also water is wasted. Therefore, technology should be developed and deployed for sensing the level of water needed by the plantation and for flowing the water to places where and when needed.
The SWAMP project addresses these issues by use of the Internet of Things (IoT), data analytics, autonomous devices and other related technologies.
The NECOS project addresses the limitations of current cloud computing infrastructures to respond to the demand of new services, as presented in two use-cases, that will drive the whole execution of the project.
The NECOS platform will be based on state of the art open software platforms, which will be carefully selected, rather than start from scratch. This baseline platform will be enhanced with the management and orchestration algorithms and the APIs that will constitute the research activity of the project. Finally, the NECOS platform will be validated, in the context of the two proposed use cases, using the 5TONIC and FIBRE testing frameworks.
OCARIoT will develop an IoT-based personalised coaching solution guiding children to adopt healthy eating and physical activity behaviour. The IoT network will allow observing child activity patterns of daily living, health evolution, physiological & behavioural parameters and environmental data. All this information combined with medical patterns will allows OCARIoT to provide a customised obesity coaching plan while enabling children to remain active and engaged in their well-being and healthy habits management.
The proposed solution will be able to empower children (and also educational staff and families) in taking control of their health by collecting real-time information about nutrition and physical activity, and interconnecting doctors and children (including parents and tutors) in order to adapt the individual obesity coaching plan. OCARIoT will demonstrate and validate its results on three specific pilot sites in Spain, Greece and Brazil.
The OCARIoT consortium will ensure children’s rights and data privacy, security and confidentiality through an Ethics Board composed by healthcare professionals and children representatives from different EU and Brazil organisations.
n all the dialects where the Industry 4.0 language is spoken, Industrial Internet of Things, Additive Manufacturing and Robotics from the technology side and Mass Customization, Product-Service Systems and Sustainable Manufacturing from the business side, represent key cornerstones and top priority challenges.
FASTEN will demonstrate an open and standardized framework to produce and deliver tailored-designed products, capable to run autonomously and deliver fast and low-cost additive manufactured products.
5G is considered the next revolution in communication. Several researches focus efforts in tackling challenges for enhancing data rate, reducing latency, improving connectivity and reducing consumption. However there is one relevant mode that has not been strongly supported by the research efforts, which is Internet access for remote areas.
As of today, we estimate 1.4 billion of unconnected people live in areas where mobile broadband coverage is not available, showing the immense impact of a network that can deliver high quality Internet access in remote areas. It is clear that a sustainable rural service will not be available unless network deployments and business strategies are specifically tailored to this scenario.
The goal of 5G-RANGE is surpass the limitations of current technologies, making the coverage of low populate areas a feasible business. Clearly, this new 5G mode needs to be flexible to comply with different applications and services.
The main goal of the SecureCloud project is to enable novel big-data applications that can use sensitive data in the cloud without compromising data security and privacy.
The HPC4E project aims to apply the new exascale HPC techniques to energy industry simulations, customizing them, and going beyond the state-of-the-art in the required HPC exascale simulations for different energy sources: wind energy production and design, efficient combustion systems for biomass-derived fuels (biogas), and exploration geophysics for hydrocarbon reservoirs.
Goals
1. Apply the new exascale HPC techniques to improve exploration of 3 different energy industries : wind, biomass-derived fuels and geophysics for hydrocarbon reservoirs
2. Efficient use of the future 100 Petaflops and Exaflop systems
3. Benefit the energy sector from mature energy-oriented simulation toolsets
4. Benefit vendors from production-ready demonstrators that justify the need of supercomputers
Trust is built based on guarantees, previous successful experiences, transparency and accountability. Yet, to-date, the technologies and frameworks necessary to raise confidence on cloud and Big Data applications is still lacking. It is crucial to create this confidence to encourage different business sectors to take up this technology and ultimately improve business efficiency and competitiveness. The ATMOSPHERE project focuses on this issue.
ATMOSPHERE will provide a solution to assess trustworthiness of cloud applications dealing with data and support the development of more trustworthy cloud applications.
Goal
Provide a solution to assess trustworthiness of cloud applications dealing with data and support the development of more trustworthy cloud applications

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
