  2. 2. • The main goal of FUTEBOL is • to develop and deploy research infrastructure, • and an associated control framework for experimentation, • in Europe and Brazil, • that enables experimental research at the convergence point between optical and wireless networks. Project

  4. 4. The focus area FUTEBOL’s focus is on converged wireless-optical experimentation. The project focuses on three use cases of relevance to researchers in industry and academia working on the design and development of future communications networks: ● UC1:The impact of broadband wireless on optical backhauling ● UC2: The design of SDN infrastructure for wireless-optical integration ● UC3: The interplay between wireless and optical for IoT

Infrastructure - Testbeds • University of Bristol (UNIVBRIS)- Bristol is Open (BiO) – City-driven digital innovation as a City Experimentation as a Service (CEaaS) • Teknologian Tutkimuskeskus VTT Oy (VTT) - VTT Converging Networks Laboratory – 5G, cognitive network technologies, network management, Internet of Things, future internet technologies, QoS/QoE and media content analysis • Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) – FIBRE Isle has structure for integrated optical/wireless experiments

Infrastructure - Testbeds • Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) – MetroVix (50km perimeter optical metropolitan ring network) for integrated optical/wireless experiments between Europe and Brazil • Trinity College Dublin (TCD) – CD/CONNECT has access to a cognitive radio testbed based on the Implementing Radio In Software (Iris) software-defined radio (SDR) system • Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG)- WINET (Wireless Networks research group) – Devices for wireless research, ranging from areas such as infrastructured networks (WiFi, 3G, 4G), Internet of Things, sensor networks and cognitive radios.

The expected/achieved results • Control Framework A unique control framework for converged optical/wireless experimentation will directly advance telecommunications by federating testbeds in Brazil and Europe. • Open Call Publication of this call: August 31st, 2017 Proposal submission cutoff date: November 20th, 2017 Notification of acceptance: December 6th, 2017 Submission of the final project report: October 1st, 2018
  11. 11. Open Call Proposals selected for advanced support: 1. Testing Adaptive Scaling for Evolved Packet Core in the FUTEBOL Research Infrastructure – Universidad del Cauca, Colombia 2. NovaGenesis – ICT Lab-Inatel, Brazil 3. AAHCCaVI: Adaptation Aware Hybrid Client-Cache: a smart pre-fetching scheme for DASH for Regular Videos and Immersive Contents – University of Missouri- Kansas City, USA Proposals selected for basic support: 1. Evaluating Wireless Body Area Network MAC Protocols Power Consumption (WBAN) – Federal University of Viçosa, Brazil 2. Experiments in Cognitive Radios – Federal University of Lavras, Brazil This is an important phase for the project because experimenters may test the resources available in FUTEBOL’s testbeds and provide their feedback. Results shall appear starting from October 2018.

The main assets (apart from the testbeds) ▪ Reports the dissemination and exploitation activities executed within the first 24 months of the project ▪ 58 papers ▪ 16 invited talks ▪ 9 workshops (Europe and Brazil) ▪ 28 YouTube videos ▪ 3 newsletters ▪ 1 contribution to 3GPP ▪ Links with other projects: FIRE, eWine, Wishfull, and Fed4Fire ▪ Experience in working in research project with many intermediate deliverables an reports with firm deadlines, as well in working in cooperation with many partners spread over Brasil and Europe. (At least for the Brazilian partners).

Recommendations for further actions either in research or policy • The ability to virtualize and abstract communication resources, dynamically reconfigure the network, and capability to share of licensed spectrum will create major regulatory and policy challenges that need further investigation and discussion. • The need to keep the testbeds working and open to experiments • More research on spectrum sharing, focusing mainly on Brazil, a really big country with large rural areas.
