Brief History of the EMS Group

 Founded in 1967 to provided specialised radio parts before
moving into the Fire and Security market in the 80s’.

 1998 System 5000 expanded to include Radio Networking.

 2001 Introduction of alkaline based wire-fire fire detection system
to reduce maintenance costs and cost of ownership, intelligent
networking and range extenders, voice evacuation and combined
  sounder sensor product.

 Currently 130 people employed in a 4,000 m2 facility in Herne
  Bay, Kent.

EN54 part 25

The European Wireless Link
        Standard
How is it applied to radio fire
devices?
Each radio fire device requires multiple
                    approvals.
For example:
 Smoke detector: EN 54 Parts 7 & 25, ETSI 300-220

 Heat detector: EN 54 Parts 5 & 25, ETSI 300-220

 Sounder: EN 54 Parts 3 & 25, ETSI 300-220

 Call Point: EN 54 Parts 11 & 25, ETSI 300-220

© Copyright EMS Security Group Ltd.
Key differences – BS5839/Part25

 Periodic Call in reporting reduced.
Was 120 minutes Now 300 Seconds
 Bi-direction communication to all devices.
 Device LED control from the CIE.
 Minimum battery life required.
 Single power source is allowed in part 25
(two power sources are still recommended in BS5839).
 Battery packs monitored every 15 minutes.

Applications
  Difficult installations.
  Sensitive sites.
  Temporary systems.
  Remote buildings.
  Time critical installations.
  Heritage buildings.
 Asbestos and other risk environments.
  Uneconomical installations for cable.
  Expanding wired systems.

  • 2. Brief History of the EMS Group  Founded in 1967 to provided specialised radio parts before moving into the Fire and Security market in the 80s’.  1998 System 5000 expanded to include Radio Networking.  2001 Introduction of alkaline based wire-fire fire detection system to reduce maintenance costs and cost of ownership, intelligent networking and range extenders, voice evacuation and combined sounder sensor product.  Currently 130 people employed in a 4,000 m2 facility in Herne Bay, Kent. © Copyright EMS Security Group Ltd.
  • 3. EN54 part 25 The European Wireless Link Standard
  • 4. How is it applied to radio fire devices? Each radio fire device requires multiple approvals. For example:  Smoke detector: EN 54 Parts 7 & 25, ETSI 300-220  Heat detector: EN 54 Parts 5 & 25, ETSI 300-220  Sounder: EN 54 Parts 3 & 25, ETSI 300-220  Call Point: EN 54 Parts 11 & 25, ETSI 300-220 © Copyright EMS Security Group Ltd.
  • 5. Key differences – BS5839/Part25  Periodic Call in reporting reduced. Was 120 minutes Now 300 Seconds  Bi-direction communication to all devices.  Device LED control from the CIE.  Minimum battery life required.  Single power source is allowed in part 25 (two power sources are still recommended in BS5839).  Battery packs monitored every 15 minutes. © Copyright EMS Security Group Ltd.
  • 6. Key differences – BS5839/Part25 +14 dB Device at highest +10 dB power level +5 dB 0 dB  Multi channel radio signalling. -5 dB Device at lowest power level  Radio channel blocking. -10 dB -15 dB  A fault is reported when both -20 dB -25 dB channels are blocked. -30 dB Total Available Device Signal  Signal overhead EN54 -25 -35 dB -40 dB Immunity to site -45 dB attenuation (path loss). -50 dB -55 dB  In EN54 it states that a minimum -60 dB signal reserve is required. -65 dB -70 dB -75 dB -80 dB -85 dB -90 dB Device Signal Level Non-EN54-25 Compliant -95 dB -100 dB -105 dB -110 dB RCC Background Level © Copyright EMS Security Group Ltd.

  • 11. Application - Historic  Hardwire was not a consideration due to the nature of the building.  Little or No disruption caused during installation. © Copyright EMS Security Group Ltd.
  • 12. Applications  Difficult installations.  Sensitive sites.  Temporary systems.  Remote buildings.  Time critical installations.  Heritage buildings.  Asbestos and other risk environments.  Uneconomical installations for cable.  Expanding wired systems. © Copyright EMS Security Group Ltd.
  • 13. Benefits Of Wire-free / Radio Technology  Speed of installation - Sensors can be fitted in less than 10 minutes  Minimal disruption to business/staff activities  The fabric of the building is protected and undamaged  Temporary protection easily & quickly implemented  Extra devices are simply added - including © Copyright EMS Security Group Ltd.
