What are the Top Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities) needed by CPAs, Accounting and Finance Professionals today?
The Business Learning Institute shares its latest research and correlates it with other leading global research (Conference Board, AICPA, CGMA, IFAC, CPA Canada, Burrus Research, Bersin by Deloitte). These skills were identified and then surveyed across over 1,000 finance and accounting professionals to identify the top five skills needed today.
In our survey work at the Business Learning Institute (http://www.blionline.org) we found that the top five skills ranked by survey respondents covered 75% or everyone's top five list, providing a great starting point for skills development and targeting in talent development.
1. Strategic and Critical Thinking
2. Communication
3. Anticipating and serving evolving needs
4. Inspiring and motivating others
5. Collaboration and mobilizing consensus
BLI also developed a framework, called The Bounce to describe the career trajectory of today's finance and accounting professional. The Bounce is the natural career trajectory for accounting and finance professionals. It talks about the process of acquiring technical mastery in the early career and beginning to supplement wit the critical skills (competencies) needed for long-term success. BLI has been leading the training and development of accounting and finance with these ‘success skills’ for eighteen years.
The Business Learning Institute (BLI) is the largest talent development and and learning provider to CPAs, accounting and finance professionals in the US. We bring our leading approach to ‘success skills’ and competency-based curriculums to the leading organizations, public companies and CPA firms all over North America.

Strengthening the connection between technical education and employmentMozammel Hoque
Changing the current nature of work/job rely on multi-level competencies though till now for many students and families, technical education is still considered as the path to a better future. In this seminar it is intended to demonstrate what approach could be followed by teachers-students and planners in order to meet the labor market.
It is all agreed that High-level Competency: a critical asset for Individuals, Businesses, and Country are the means of economic growth. We can attain it by linking Technical Education with Employment that must meet the labor market needs, which in turns meeting the strategic options of the poverty reduction agenda of the government. Hence STEP - Skills and Training Enhancement Project was adopted in 2010 through TVET - Technical and Vocational Education and Training system. Skill competition is one of many ways to promote TVET. “How can this Competence be generated by the Technical Education System?” is going to be disclosed here.
Discussion document for consultation with stakeholders regarding proposed National Technical Training Center. The initiative evolved into DigiSkills.pk with target to train 1 million people.

12. Putting first things first … Points to ponder…
STRATEGIC THINKING
WHAT DO I WANT? -- NEED
HOW DO I GET THERE? -- SOLUTION
WHERE AM I NOW? -- CAPABILITY
WHEN SHOULD I GET THERE? -- DELIVERY
WHO CAN HELP ME? – NETWORK
WHY DID WE FAIL/SUCCEED? – EVALUATION -- INNOVATE
15. CLARITY OF DEMAND + SUFFICIENCY OF SUPPLY
Seek first to understand ….
GAP [void, discrepancy, mismatch]
A gap exists because there is an incongruence
In SUPPLY and DEMAND. The gap is Bipolar.
16. THE TALENT FACTOR – BRIDGING THE GAP
Defining the “GAP” – SUPPLY SIDE
Low employability [unfilled vacancies] - Quality
Limited pool [geographic expansion] - Quantity
Indicators:
1. Language proficiency [comprehension, control]
2. Language efficacy [confidence, customer-orientation]
3. Cyber literacy [updating, upgrading]
4. Unrealistic career choice [popularity vs. potential]
5. Societal norms [morals, values, media, influence]
6. Self-employment & migration [asset is also the liability]
7. No active referral network [competition & poaching]
8. Intra/Extra-academic training [traditional vs. non-traditional / HEI-TVI]
17. THE TALENT FACTOR – BRIDGING THE GAP
Defining the “GAP” – DEMAND SIDE
High qualification standard [Expectation]
Career & employment [Perception]
Indicators:
1. In-house training [general vs. specific]
2. No Near-hire catchment program [20-30% potential hires]
3. No Far-hire catchment program [70-80% potential hires]
4. Unclear career path [dead-end-job image]
5. Referral Bonus Wars [machine gun vs. sniper]
6. No Dual Training program [hire vs. educate]
7. No centralized pooling [in-house vs. shared pool]
8. Labor and work-life balance issues [no labor representation]
18. Points to ponder…
What are people’s expectations of me?
Do I recognize and accept my responsibility?
Am I willing to improve myself?
20. Think WIN-WIN
-Outsourced ICT operations need not be confined to NCR
-Countryside investment will decongest Metro Manila
-Talent from the regions will be granted more
employment opportunities
-Employment must not hinder Entrepreneurship
-An original Philippine ICT will strengthen our global
competitiveness
-An empowered citizenry means an empowered nation
22. Points to ponder…
Would you rather be employed or self-employed?
Would you rather work here or abroad?
Do you know what it takes to start a business?
25. INITIATIVES AND INTERVENTIONS
COMMUNICASIA – International ICT Conference & Expo
(IOS) INTERNATIONAL OUTSOURCING SUMMIT [BPAP]
(ICCCE) INTERNATIONAL CONTACT CENTER CONFERENCE & EXPO [CCAP]
TWSP (Training for Work Scholarship Program)
TESDA, iBPAP, NICP

MOSC (Microsoft Office Specialists Certification Program)
CCST, Certiport
LEAP (Learning English Proficiency for Pinoys)
DOST-ICTO,UP
LEAN Start-Up 101 Bootcamp
DOST-ICTO
26. Points to ponder…
HARDWARE + SOFTWARE + KNOW-WARE (PEOPLE-WARE)
WITHOUT KNOW-WARE… YOU GET NOWHERE
PUTTING THE “KNOW” IN KNOW-WARE
KNOWLEDGE + IMAGINATION = INNOVATION
28. Supporting Talent and Technopreneurship
2009 National ICT Summit of the Philippines (Clark)
2011 CLARK CONEX 1.0 – International ICT Conference & Expo
[Inspiring A World of Change]
2012 CLARK CONEX 2.0

[Championing the Global Philippine ICT Brand]
2014 CLARK CONEX 4.0 - START IT UP! (Start-Up Weekend)
[The Future of Philippine ICT.. Today]
Sharpen the saw…
29. Points to ponder…
How can I improve my skills?
Who can I have as a mentor?
HOW CAN I CONTRIBUTE?
30. In Conclusion
Knowledge in ICT gives you a competitive edge whether as
an employee or an entrepreneur.
Innovation is the name of the game. There are no new
Ideas… only innovations.
Build your support NETWORK. No one ever succeeds alone.
Never stop dreaming. Nothing is impossible.
Editor's Notes
As you can see, the Organizational Structure for the FOO is very small, but the individuals that will take on these roles have to have highly technical qualifications.
The ICT Office aims to have an integrated framework network, services, applications, and content. We also aim to determine the institutional, legal, and regulatory mechanisms to manage the framework.
In order for this Program to be successful, policies and plans from its stakeholders should be adopted.
Our major targets for this Program include:
- Development of plans and policies relative to the implementation and adoption of infrastructure, systems and applications and other related framework.
The key project here is what we call the National Broadband Plan. To illustrate, in the Philippines, 83 percent of public schools do not have Internet access. The ICT Office believes that if we engage the industry and other stakeholders to take on this, the benefits of ICT can be brought to everybody.
We also want the ICT ecosystem to be safe, which is why we also have the Cybersecurity Program. We are putting safeguards to ensure that the welfare of Filipinos and industries are taken cared of when accessing the Internet.
