Preparing for a “lifetime of
learning”
•  The days of getting a degree and
then stopping one’s education have
ended.
•  For many students, college life will
shift from a four-year experience to
shorter, more focused times of
learning.
•  College campuses will include a
broader mix of generations.

professional life?
•  The paradigm of ‘learn-work-retire’ will not exist in the near future.

•  The loss of “milestones” such as getting a driver’s
license will require society to create new milestones.
•  Leaving one’s parental home will occur later in life,
as old as late 20s, due to the requirements and

•  Some will achieve a better work/life balance due
to teleworking.
•  Four to five generations of Americans will study
and work together. There will be less opportunity
for a generation to form a cohesive structure as

process focus, such as mathematics, statistics,
English, and different aspects of technology.
•  The other side is content focus, such as
economics, business, political science, information

•  Interdisciplinary approaches to traditional and
emerging fields will be necessary to maximize the

•  Double or integrated majors will be common for

and most employee turnover will be less

Regardless of one’s career, work of the future will
require a great deal more knowledge than it has in
the past.
•  Adjusting to this will be similar to technology
adaptation, only it will be continuous.
•  Some people will be early adapters and benefit
economically.
•  Others will lag behind and suffer economically.
Traditional jobs:

work will disappear.
•  Accounting and what remains
of bookkeeping
•  Warehouse operations
•  Driving, mechanical repair,
and related items
•  Clerical work including
paralegals, financial workers,
postal workers, travel agents,
cashiers, etc.

Law and medicine
Some highly professional work will also
disappear:
•  Medical diagnoses will not likely involve people
nor will many surgical procedures.
•  Many duties of certified nursing assistants will be
replaced by robots who will deliver meals and
medications.
•  Autonomous vehicles will reduce the need for
visits to the ER and will largely eliminate DUI
lawyers, highway patrol, and traffic court.

Telework will be as common as working in an
office:
•  It will become an expectation in many fields.
•  Organizations and leaders will have to adapt,
including in terms of tracking employee
productivity.

Changes in technology will mean no
more snow days
•  An advanced, in-home work station that includes
virtual reality will grant employees the ability to work
anywhere.
•  Housing will have to conform to accommodate couples
who work from home. Most homes will lose their
garages to become home offices, especially as car
ownership will decline.
