CGRI Survey Series. Corporate Governance Research Initiative, Stanford Rock Center for Corporate Governance at Stanford University, February 2017
In summer 2016, the Rock Center for Corporate Governance at Stanford University conducted a nationwide survey of 1,554 individuals to understand how the American public views CEOs who engage in potentially unethical behavior, and the public’s determination of “fair punishment” for these actions.
The study reveals that almost half of Americans believe CEOs should be fired (or worse) for unethical behavior. Violations of trust between company and customer are considered the most egregious. And, the public is surprisingly critical of CEOs who engage in “immoral” personal actions. Key takeaways include:
Almost half of Americans believe CEOs should be fired (or worse) for unethical behavior.
Violations of trust between company and customer are considered most egregious.
The public is surprisingly critical of CEOs who engage in “immoral” personal actions.
“We find that the public is highly critical of—and very willing to fire—CEOs who engage in behaviors that are morally or ethically questionable, even if these actions are not illegal and in some cases even if they cause no obvious harm to shareholders, employees, or the public,” says Professor David F. KEY FINDINGS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
1. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC ARE EXTREMELY CRITICAL OF CEOS WHO ENGAGE IN QUESTIONABLE BEHAVIOR.

Book Preview, Organization Horsepower: Thinking Like a Motorcycle Racing TeamHarrison Withers
Business can be abstract and detached. By comparison, motorcycle racing is primal and visceral, and has an unmistakable goal.
Harrison Withers, expert talent development consultant and amateur motorcycle racer, has cleverly brought those two worlds together, finding unique parallels between concepts of business and those of motorcycle racing. He views the relationship between the two through the lens of technology, people, and performance. It all starts with the motivation to engage why business practitioners and racers alike not only accept the risk, but embrace and ultimately love it.
Analogies abound between business and racing: Where people fit on the team, how performance is measured, how it is improved, and how to put predictive models into practice; competitive class structures, organizational design, the role of simulation in testing and practice, and race-day execution.
Harrison's thoughts bring to light some connections we've never thought of before and in so doing given us a fresh perspective on business. Book foreword by Erik Buell, motorcycling legend and managing member of Erik Buell Racing.

ThinkNow Entrepreneurship Report – Women’s Point of ViewThinkNow
Women’s entrepreneurship is thriving in America. According to the 2018 State of Women-Owned Business report commissioned by American Express, 1,821 women-owned businesses were launched per day over the last year, bringing the total number of women-owned firms to 12.3 million, employing over 9 million people and accounting for $1.8 trillion in revenue.
So, in these last few days of October, as we wind down the celebration of National Women’s Small Business Month, we are still reminded of the tremendous contributions women business owners have made to the global economy, but also charged with challenging the antiquated mindsets and inadequate policies that still plague our cause.
Surge in female-owned firms:
Despite those challenges, the entrepreneurial spirit among women, especially women of color, is magical, sparking growth across all industries. Between 2007 and 2018, the number of businesses owned by women of color grew at 3x the national average of all women-owned firms, driven primarily by Hispanic and African-American women. As of 2018, women of color accounted for 47% of all women-owned businesses.
So, it’s not surprising that significantly more Hispanics and African-American women believe that owning a business is a strong indicator of success. According to the 2018 ThinkNow Entrepreneurship™ Report, 47% of Hispanic women and 52% of African-American women agree with this sentiment compared to White and Asian women.
While half of women-owned businesses are concentrated into three industries – other services, healthcare/social assistance, and professional/scientific/tech services – the restaurant/food and beverage industry are among the top choices for women to start businesses, according to ThinkNow.

Driving Higher Performance: Leadership and Development Tools to Positively Im...Human Capital Media
These days, most leaders and organizations are seeking to drive higher performance. However, very few of them really take in consideration today’s dynamic and multigenerational workplace and the fact that employees have higher expectations for their leaders and organizations. These expectations go beyond the single focus of making a profit to include a conscious culture, meaningful work and purpose and an opportunity to make a positive contribution toward customers, employees and society.
Though more than $156.2 billion was spent on employee learning, as previously reported by U.S. organizations, industry reports show that most organizations have focused on developing technical competencies. Although technical competencies are highly important, a variety of industry reports currently show gaps in leadership development, soft or essential business skills and employee engagement.

What is important to note is that our respondents reflected the current populations of women business owners according to the last census.
Again, expectations are met for the first year of such a survey – zoom in on metro in next slide…
Half of respondents became business owners in the last five years. (mention sample sizes)
Note: “Other” includes 4 nonprofits and 3 “imports / wholesale”
So, the use of employees and /or contractors is not mutually exclusive.
