The Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of Web Applications in the AWS Cloud - Jine...Amazon Web Services
Weighing the financial considerations of owning and operating a data center facility versus employing a cloud infrastructure requires detailed and careful analysis. In practice, it is not as simple as just measuring potential hardware expense alongside utility pricing for compute and storage resources. The Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is often the financial metric used to estimate and compare direct and indirect costs of a product or a service. Given the large differences between the two models, it is challenging to perform accurate apples-to-apples cost comparisons between on-premises data centers and cloud infrastructure that is offered as a service. In this presentation, we explain the economic benefits of deploying a web application in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud over deploying an equivalent web application hosted in an on-premises data center and highlight the 5 things to not forget while calculating TCO.

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Remember counter? SHOW of hands. For those that did not raise your hands – NOT GFD in USDThis is actually the number…. It’s 439 EXABYTES !!! <RIF Stats ->Tech Community>Despite the Global Recession…..Managing all that information is difficult and time consumingEMC’s Virtual storage can help you….Technologies like FAST and Storage Federation are key ingredientsThis morning, I will cover new products likeVPLEX and VMAXButplease make sure you take the timeBecause, by doing so, - manage the challenges of info growth
Let’s take a look at how information has been storedFor over a half a centuryIn the early days, volumes of information 1:1 mappingEven when we introduced RAID groups two decades ago,As a result, info limited by physical boundaries / characteristics of magnetic storage
Now, these physical boundaries are eliminated.Virtual Storage unleashes the power and value of your informationAs PG mentioned yesterday, we like to use the VMWare analogy for Virtual Storage.VMWare – abst layer btw phys SERVER and APP/OSVirtual Storage abst layer btw PHYS STORAGE & USER INFO
And by doing so,right information, right place, right timeThe “Right Place” could be the “Right Place” for cost, space or energy efficiencies. It could be -> right place to leverage mass scale computation like cloud infrastructures.it could be the right place for disaster recovery or disaster avoidanceOr it could be the right place for the optimal performance. And as you know, all of these places are not mutually exclusive
Yesterday, JT & PG talked about benefits of the PcloudLeverage existing data center + new models like CCVirtual Servers / Virtual Storage -> 2 cornerstones of PCFAST + Storage Federation are 2 key ingredients of Virtual StorageFAST -> optimizeinfo within the data center or cloud infrastructure -> simple policies and goalsStorage Federation -> move information seamlessly within the DC , between DCs, or service providers.
So let’s take a look at Storage Federation.Storage Federation - for cooperation across storage elementsLF - data migrations, ND tech refreshes, and simplif mgmtWe’re now extending these concepts and capabilities to a global scale – or Global Federation.GF allows for mobility & access of LARGE DATASETS not only within the data center BUT NOW across data centers
Yesterday we announced 3 innovations. Our Virtual Storage VisionA new and exciting architecture called VPLEXAnd the first set of products to be built from this architecture called VPLEX Local, Metro, Geo and GlobalThese combined capabilities create the next generation of data mobility and access
So let’s take a look at this new architectureVPLEX is a true scale out cluster-N+1 - for perf, connectivity and capacity.N-1 architecture for HA – 8 node -> 1 nodeIMPL today as APPLIANCE – Built from EnginesThe cluster exports Virtual Volumes to the SANAllows physical storage to be virtualized behind the clusterAdvanced data caching to improve application performance within DCIt’s also open and supports your existing infrastructure, including EMC and non-EMC arrays
Another key part VPLEX arch & strategy -Array AwarePreserve investments in stginnovThe storage industry billions of $$ in storage innovationThese innovations LR, RR, AP, VP, FAST & management VPLEX architecture / strategyLeverage, be complimentary & Not negate VPLEX can also extend new value into older storage assets and protect your investment even more
Let’s look at use cases. Today we have GA for 2 configsVPLEX Local and VPLEX MetroVPLEX LOCAL -simplified mobility for ND tech refreshes & LRONew storage frame -> Mon -> plug VPLEX -> Mon aft moving apps w/o disruption to users. VPLEX also has simple provisioning and mgmt for mixed array envDon’t just take my word, let’s hear customer VPLEX tech in prod************** Run Video ************************
Next use case - VPLEX METRO – DCs sync dist to 100 KilometersReal innovation of VPLEX -DCC over distance. Members in group -> latest copy of data and where to get it.Updates all members are notified of the changes. The distributed caching protocol minimizes BW and latency Why this is relevant? Fundamentally change DCby creating AA data over distance. No other technology can do this so it is a true game changer. Not only can you move and access data…..You can provision and share capacity at a distance Enables RA across sites whether For example.
Really cool VPLEX Metro +vMotion. ND move and relocate ….So now you can easily balance your applications and workloads across Data Centers. Pat Gelsinger demo’d the ability to move hundreds of virtual machines in minutes. This capability gives you new options for how you think about and plan your Data Centers.
For all the TrekkiesTeleport your APP to anywhere you need it to be.So now you can sayScotty, it’s Captain KirkThe enterprise is under attackBeam me up the financial reporting systemsThe SARBOX auditors are on the bridge now!!
And in the future….VPLEX will provide the ability to TELEPORT and access information anywhere across the globe. Whether it be across cities, countries or continents
So now you can imagine…..….. For situations like balancing workloads across DCs….of for avoiding a natural disaster like a hurricane of floodOr you could run your nightly batch process and have the CHANGES and RESULTS results immediately available in your production environment. You could also combine small DC’s into large virtual DC’s and run applications 24 by Forever.
So let’s take a look at another customer that has significantly reduced their migration time and costs with VPLEX Metro.**************** Run Video********************
Over the past year we’ve worked VERY closely….many of our partners, Oracle, Microsoft and SAP To provide live Application Migrations with VPLEXWe’ve created Proven Solutions -> demonstrated -> pavilionAnd they’re also downloadable from PowerLinkNow, let’s hear from one of our partners on the VPLEX technologyRoll the clip
Last month, we held the 114th running of the Boston Marathon. This historic race runs 26 miles from Hopkinton to Boston
As some of you may know, HQ HOP 2 miles from startFinish 2 miles from EMC WorldTo show you the capabilities of VPLEX Metro Teleported 26 x 26 x 26 This moved 676 GB of INFOHP XP24000 array to EMC’s VMAX array.
So let’s take a look at the results. With STORAGE vMOTION2.6 hours to move the apps and data from Hopkinton to Boston with an average latency of around 4-6 ms.
The same test took only 42 minutesWith VPLEX + vMotion and VPLEX 3.5 times fasterAnd it did so at a much lower latency. The lower latency result of the complementary interaction of VPLEX and VMAX’s advanced data caching algorithms
What’s even more significant Appswere running in Boston in minutes instead of hours with VPLEX The key here -> quickly respond to changing demands of your DC Like balancing workloadsAvoiding bad weathermoving APPSout of high cost metropolitanareas.
Let’s now see what happens when we Combine VPLEX w/ other technologies like Symmetrix VMAX and FASTBy doing so, we canMove data fasterRun apps in a new location quickerAnd improve the response time by 50%
Update – 26 miles in our Adv Dev Labs30 PhDs …..Some of the customers -> in the audience todayIn fact, I saw Scott Goldman from ESPN yesterday. Scott are you here?I’d just like to personally thank you and the other customersWe’ve analyzed almost one million ……..And here’s what we’ve learned.
It’s not that we haven’t known this for a long time. We’ve seen hot physical disksWe’ve seen hot logical units or volumesAnd when we look inside a volume or a LUN, we also see hot data sets‘We see Cold spots too’
Let’s look at some other aspects about managing ECVSMid-tier to large scale enterprises -> many consolidated APP ENVENV may have both virtualized and non-virtualized APPSEXT impt that the stg admin maintain control. VS pools can now be carved out of the array by the STG ADMINAnd provided -> VM ADM to use in a SELF Service fashion. A new vCenter plug-in, called VSI, allows the VM admin Discover, provision and manage storage completely independent from the other APP ENV.What’s even betterVSI unique, available today, free and downloadable via PL
Today -> Right here right now announcing New VS Protection. Ready? Now Chloe O’B -> TV series ’24’ -> 24 by forever protection for VSHow many people watch the TV show 24?The producers asked us if we could provide data center equipment.Since VMAX is the gold standardYou can see it here in the backgroundIn case you missed the show, I brought a clip for you to see. Check out the Symmetrix VMAX in the background. Let’s run the clip.
OK, as I mentioned earlier, information continues to grow at a rapid pace.In fact, since we started this morning -> 129 PB of new infoVS can help you better manage the increasing challenges of information growthSo make sure you take the time to learn about FAST, Federation, VPLEX and VMAXBecause It will help you get the RIGHTINFO …..And it will help you ENJOY the Journey to the PRIVATE CLOUDSo Thank You and Have Fun !!!
