Whitepaper : Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) on Extended Distance Clus...EMC
This White Paper describes EMC VPLEX features and functionality that are relevant to Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC) and Database. It also provides best practices for configuring an Oracle Extended RAC environment to optimally leverage EMC VPLEX.
Virtualization technologies allow IT organizations to consolidate workloads running on multiple operating systems and software stacks and allocate platform resources dynamically to meet specific business and application requirements. Leadership virtualization has become the key technology to efficiently deploy servers in enterprise data centers to drive down costs and become the foundation for server pools and cloud computing technology. Therefore, the performance of this foundation technology is critical for the success of server pools and cloud computing.
VMware vCloud Automation Center, which has been renamed vRealize Automation as part of the vRealize Cloud Management Platform, automates the process of provisioning database virtual machines, and is designed by VMware to help IT without sacrificing control, security, or flexibility. Automating time-consuming processes has the potential to enable growth, improve service quality, and free IT resources for innovation and process improvement. As businesses continue to evolve and grow, DBAs and IT departments must be able to keep up with demand. Quick and easy access to self-service portals, a streamlined provisioning process that incorporates IT best practices and security policies, and fast delivery of VMs all attribute to avoiding delays and providing for increasing demands. DBAs and IT retain control of the content, upgrades, provisioning, and accessibility of the database VMs while still able to quickly provide virtualized environments to meet the needs of their business.
The combination of 16th Generation Dell PowerEdge servers and VMware vSphere 8.0 provides a resilient and efficient solution for organizations running containerized applications. Upgrading to the hardware and software combination provides helpful features that increase workload availability and streamline management. We found Workload Availability Zones, ClusterClass, and node image customization features to function well and as we expected, thus aiding both development and infrastructure teams in a DevOps context. Deploying vSphere 8.0 on Dell PowerEdge servers enables organizations to take advantage of the benefits of containerization and modernize their IT infrastructure.

1. EMC CLARiiON CX3 series provides the highest availability for
virtualized IT environments
EMC designed an entirely new midrange architecture—UltraScale™—to deliver the highest
levels of availability in affordable, scalable, and easy-to-use systems that meet the needs
for dynamic VMware®
environments/deployments. The EMC®
CLARiiON®
CX3 UltraScale
architecture incorporates EMC UltraPoint™ technology for back-end functionality to provide
better isolation of error conditions while reducing the loop latency of the FC protocol, thereby
increasing the performance of the system. In addition, the EMC CLARiiON CX3 series is
designed with redundant power/cooling capabilities and features improved fault detection,
isolation, and error-correction functions. The CLARiiON CX3 series also features hot-spar-
ing to proactively copy data to a spare disk when the system senses a drive is beginning
to fail. This reduces drive rebuild times and increases the availability of the array. EMC
designed the industry’s first 99.999 percent available midrange storage array because
the availability of your virtual machines is only as good as the storage their data ultimately
resides on. This is one of the many reasons why more customers choose EMC CLARiiON
for VMware than any other networked storage array.

The Big Picture
2. The most flexible deployment options for VMware
VMware customers leveraging the advanced storage software and architecture of the
CLARiiON CX3 UltraScale series enjoy the most flexible deployment options available in
virtualized data centers. You can choose to deploy applications on Fiber Channel, iSCSI,
or FC/iSCSI-connected hosts. The flexibility of having both connectivity options in the
same networked storage system allows you to choose the best connectivity solution for
your VMware deployment—from both a cost and a performance perspective. For many
businesses looking to extend the economics experienced through their server consolidation
with VMware, iSCSI can provide the most cost-effective solution. The CLARiiON CX3
UltraScale series provides choice without compromise; the flexibility to deploy the right
connectivity solution for your organization.
Extending the value of flexibility is the ability to tier application performance with the
patent-pending QoS software, Navisphere®
Quality of Service Manager (NQM). In virtualized
data centers, the ability to have granular control over your virtual machine performance from
the virtual cpu/memory through the storage system is essential in being able to commit to
service-level agreements. CLARiiON’s advanced QoS software can be implemented to
provide advanced storage service-level management in highly dynamic, virtualized
infrastructures. When NQM is setup with VMware’s Dynamic Resource Scheduler (DRS)
functionality, you have the power of the industry’s only end-to-end QoS management in
your virtualized infrastructure.
MetaLUNs and virtualLUNs enable efficient provisioning and ILM
for VMware
Being able to quickly and non-disruptively deploy new virtual machines on the fly has
literally changed the game in information technology. CLARiiON’s metaLUN and
virtualLUN technologies compliment moves toward server virtualization, as they allow
for realtime/online expansion of LUNs and transparent volume movement, respectively,
with no interruption to host I/O.
MetaLUNs are created when a single LUN is expanded via several methods: concatenation,
striping, or both. When virtual machines require additional capacity, users easily provide
additional capacity to their application with metaLUN technology through CLARiiON’s
intuitive Web-based management interface, Navisphere Management Suite. The realtime
LUN expansion also supports the creation of new virtual machines on the fly. And with
the new capacity immediately available to theVMware ESXServer™, no reboot is necessary,
making this functionality imperceptible to the host application. Both RDM and VMFS are
supported with metaLUNs and users can leverage this key technology to make efficient
usage of their storage resources in a VMware environment.
With the CLARiiON CX3 UltraScale seriesyou have the capabilityto mixa widervarietyofdrive
types within a single system. This functionality to mix SATA, Fibre Channel, Low-Cost Fibre
Channel (both 2Gb/s and 4Gb/s drives) compliments economics found only with server vir-
tualization. VirtualLUNs are provided free of charge and make possible the ability to move
your virtual machines within the system—between drive types, online, and non-disruptively.
The flexibility to move virtual machines within the array based on your performance
requirements now becomes possible. In the event that a virtual machine becomes less
critical, virtualLUNs can be used to migrate information from FC to SATA drives online and
non-disruptively. VirtualLUNs can also be used when reconfiguring the system layout or
adding additional capacity. This technology makes CLARiiON one of the most flexible
midrange networked storage systems, allowing you manage and change the system con-
figuration as your VMware environment changes and grows.
