NEXT SLIDE – CUSTOMERS ON TAPE CHALLENGES
FRANK INTROS VIDEOCustomers discussing challenges with tape
FRANK TRANSITIONS TO HUGOFS: But the problem is actually broader than just tape storage.FS: Hugo, care to comment on that?HP: Yes. In the beginning, there was just tape….
Tape stored redundant copyTape manually moved off site for DROlder tapes for time travelTape was cheap; got the job done
Disk improves backup success rateSpeed matching bufferCritical restores may come from diskTape for DR and time travel
Keep all operational copies localAll operational restores from diskAvoid recalling tapes from offsiteDR still manual with tape
DR copies offsite sooner and automaticallyTape optional for archiveKey features: time-to-offsite; replication robustness; wan efficiency
In virtualized datacenters, backup needs to just send deduped delta changes from one version to the next. Recovery copies need to be virtual, held in deduplicated storage.DR also needs to just send deduped delta changes, creating more virtual images at the DR site. Files and VMDKs should be restored or used directly, online, avoiding the truck to Iron Mountain and the risk of manual handling and tracking. The only way to keep them online affordably and still meet compliance requirements is to use dedupe storage here too.
HUGO INTROS VIDEOHP: Many customers are already successfully on the journey to disk-centric data protection. Implementations are yielding real business value. Dedupe has had a huge impact. Lets hear from a few of them:ROLL: “Customers on the Journedy” Customer VideoFS: picks up on other end to begin Product Section
FRANK INTRODUCES VIDEO:Customers Using EMC Products to Beat the Backup BluesCustomers talking about individual or sets of EMC backup products + a lead in segment where customers say “I beat my backup blues”FS: might be nice to hear what I think, but let’s hear what our customers have to say, and how actual products are make a difference….and how they beat the blues
FRANK TRANSITION TO CUSTOMER ROUNDTABLE>Aaron and Alan join Hugo and Frank on Stage during the end of the video.FS: As you’ve just seen, companies of all sizes and industries are shifting from reliance on tape to a disk-based architecture. We have seen mid-size companies go completely tapeless, and in the past couple of years, the world’s largest enterprises are transforming their data centers. Joining us now, from two Fortune 100 companies, are Aaron Plaza from Emerson and Alan Pearson from McKesson to hear how two of the worlds largest companies are also redesigning their backups.
Round Table:Frank leads FAQ (Hugo pops in with wise observations)….conversation style.About company (and EMC backup products using)How did you justify the move to disk? How was the implementation? (Aaron/Emerson)What was the tipping point that got your started on the journey? (Alan/McKesson leads, Aaron comments)How has your life changed? Have you beat the back the blues? What else could this apply to in your business? Any thoughts on what might be next?END Frank: Thanks them both, great information for the audience here, let’s give them a big hand – they leave the stage.NOTE: Following slide to be shown on middle screenNOTE: Qs to Prompt will be on table for Frank/Hugo
