Marco Polo was born in Venice, Italy in 1254 to a wealthy merchant family. He traveled extensively with his father and uncle from a young age, including a trip to China from 1265-1268. In 1271, Marco joined his father and uncle on a return trip to China, staying for 17 years. During this time, he served in the court of Kublai Khan and traveled throughout Asia, experiences which he later documented in his book "Travels of Marco Polo." He returned to Venice in 1295 and later married and had children before dying in 1324.
