Big Data 2.0 shifts the focus to enterprise applications, with an emphasis on solving real business problems. Key characteristics of Big Data 2.0 include a focus on reducing latency, integrating Hadoop and NoSQL solutions, and making analytics more interactive. For Hadoop to truly serve as an enterprise data platform, open standards are needed to unite the various distributions.
Gayatri Patel, eBay, presents at the Big Analytics 2012 Roadshow
The wonders of what data can do for an organization is measured in the productivity and competitiveness of their team's decisions. Some believe more data is the key. Agreed...but good decisions require more than just deriving intelligence from big data. In this dynamic market, the need to socialize and evolve ideas with other teams, quickly correlate information across sources, and test ideas to fail fast early are strong enablers to gain competitive footing. eBay¹s analytic and technology advancements garners insights and approaches that continue to help our employees tell their "data stories" and make better decisions.
Big data refers to the massive amounts of data now available due to greater collection and storage capabilities. There are three shifts that have occurred with big data: 1) the end of sampling as all available data is used, 2) the end of exactitude as prediction and correlation are used instead of causation, and 3) the end of causality as prediction relies more on correlation than mechanisms of causation. Big data will transform society, business, government, and individuals as data becomes a resource that can be used for predictive analysis but also raises issues around data privacy and the balance between free will and data-driven decisions.
The document is a report on the big data industry in 2011. It provides an overview of key big data technologies like Hadoop and NoSQL databases. It examines the major players in the space, both established companies looking to adopt these technologies and startups focused on Hadoop. Transforming Data Architecture Complexity at Sears - StampedeCon 2013StampedeCon
At the StampedeCon 2013 Big Data conference in St. Louis, Justin Sheppard discussed Transforming Data Architecture Complexity at Sears. High ETL complexity and costs, data latency and redundancy, and batch window limits are just some of the IT challenges caused by traditional data warehouses. Gain an understanding of big data tools through the use cases and technology that enables Sears to solve the problems of the traditional enterprise data warehouse approach. Learn how Sears uses Hadoop as a data hub to minimize data architecture complexity – resulting in a reduction of time to insight by 30-70% – and discover “quick wins” such as mainframe MIPS reduction.
Apache Atlas provides metadata services and a centralized metadata repository for Hadoop platforms. It aims to enable data governance across structured and unstructured data through hierarchical taxonomies. Upcoming features include expanded dataset lineage tracking and integration with Apache Kafka and Ranger for dynamic access policy management. Challenges of big data management include scaling traditional tools to handle large volumes of entities and metadata, and Atlas addresses this through its decentralized and metadata-driven approach.
Apache Hadoop and the Big Data Opportunity in Banking
The document discusses Apache Hadoop and how it can help banks leverage big data opportunities. It provides an overview of what Apache Hadoop is, how it works, and the core projects. It then discusses how Hadoop can help banks create value by detecting fraud, managing risk, improving products based on customer data analysis, and more. The presenters are from Hortonworks, the lead commercial company for Hadoop, and Tresata, a company focused on using Hadoop for banking applications.

Big Data and Hadoop training course is designed to provide knowledge and skills to become a successful Hadoop Developer. In-depth knowledge of concepts such as Hadoop Distributed File System, Setting up the Hadoop Cluster, Map-Reduce,PIG, HIVE, HBase, Zookeeper, SQOOP etc. will be covered in the course.
This document summarizes key insights from a McKinsey presentation on customer journey analytics and big data. It finds that companies are storing large amounts of data but few know how to extract value from it. Analyzing customer journeys rather than individual touchpoints provides more predictive insights into customer satisfaction and churn. Mapping important customer journeys in an industry reveals opportunities to improve the customer experience and reduce costs. The presentation provides an example of a retail bank that identified ways to decrease service costs and improve customer satisfaction by analyzing its customer journey data.
This document provides an overview of big data and Hadoop. It discusses why Hadoop is useful for extremely large datasets that are difficult to manage in relational databases. It then summarizes what Hadoop is, including its core components like HDFS, MapReduce, HBase, Pig, Hive, Chukwa, and ZooKeeper. The document also outlines Hadoop's design principles and provides examples of how some of its components like MapReduce and Hive work.

Forrester forecasts* that direct spending on the Internet of Things (IoT) will exceed $400 Billion by 2023. From manufacturing and utilities, to oil & gas and transportation, IoT improves visibility, reduces downtime, and creates opportunities for entirely new business models.
But successful IoT implementations require far more than simply connecting sensors to a network. The data generated by these devices must be collected, aggregated, cleaned, processed, interpreted, understood, and used. Data-driven decisions and actions must be taken, without which an IoT implementation is bound to fail.

As Trino users increasingly rely on cloud object storage for retrieving data, speed and cloud cost have become major challenges. The separation of compute and storage creates latency challenges when querying datasets; scanning data between storage and compute tiers becomes I/O bound. On the other hand, cloud API costs related to GET/LIST operations and cross-region data transfer add up quickly.
The newly introduced Trino file system cache by Alluxio aims to overcome the above challenges. In this session, Jianjian will dive into Trino data caching strategies, the latest test results, and discuss the multi-level caching architecture. This architecture makes Trino 10x faster for data lakes of any scale, from GB to EB.
What you will learn:
- Challenges relating to the speed and costs of running Trino in the cloud
- The new Trino file system cache feature overview, including the latest development status and test results
- A multi-level cache framework for maximized speed, including Trino file system cache and Alluxio distributed cache
- Real-world cases, including a large online payment firm and a top ridesharing company
- The future roadmap of Trino file system cache and Trino-Alluxio integration

For the last 7 years I’ve been focused outwardly on exploring Kafka application development challenges, but recently I decided to look inward and see what I could discover about the performance, scalability and resource characteristics of the Kafka clusters themselves. Using a suite of Performance Engineering techniques, I will reveal some surprising discoveries about cosmic Kafka mysteries in our data centres, related to: cluster sizes and distribution (using Zipf’s Law), horizontal vs. vertical scalability, and predicting Kafka performance using metrics, modelling and regression techniques. These insights are relevant to Kafka developers and operators.
