Growing E Waste Issues and Its Impeding Effects on Living Beings
Besides developing and implying so many rules to overcome the e waste issue in India, no
progress has been observed so far. As the days are passing, millions tons of e waste is being
generated and the management is still a big issue in India. Not just the producer, but consumers
are also responsible to recycle their discarded electronic items. The new hi-tech devices and
gadgets replace the old electronic items and people buy them which constitute more advanced
feature. Thus, have you ever thought what to do with your old electronic items? People usually
throw their old electronics with other waste, landfills or get them incinerated which is highly
dangerous for the earth and its living beings.
Whether you are opting to throw your superfluous wastes into the landfills or go with
incineration, both of these processes will only harm the Mother Nature and its life on the earth.
There are many companies also which offers take-back schemes for the consumers which
further recycle electronic components. Or there are many recycling centers available where
you can donate your discarded electronics and they will recycle them following a secure
process.
The amount of electronic waste generated every year is 40 million metric tons and only 13 per
cent of this waste is recycled in the developing countries. As per the United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP), European Union produces about 9 million tons of this waste
which widely includes redundant computers, television, mobiles, laptops and other electronic
devices. Moreover, the UNEP states that this ballpark figure is likely too low.
E waste is a growing challenge and it has depicted that the problem of e waste will rise
immensely with the coming years. Not just the India is facing a massive challenge for the
management of electronic waste, but it is one of the biggest challenges in almost every
developing country. The process for the management of this waste has not been designed
properly and in fact, the workers perform with bare hands or without any safety cover which is
not good for the health and environment.
The informal practices of recycling in developing countries may results into many deadly health
risks. Like for an instance, an exposure to the toxic metals like leads, cadmium, etc may result
into the pulmonary and cardiovascular disorders. The combustion process while burning these
metals can directly link to the dreadful diseases in adults and children.
Thus, the waste constitutes plethora of toxic components like lead, cadmium, mercury, barium,
lithium, polybrominated flame retardants, and many others. The exposure to these toxins can
result into the health issues that include birth defects, cardio problems, liver, skeletal or kidney
failure. In fact, they can affect the nervous and reproductive systems critically.
Likewise, the toxin metals have dreadful impacts on the environment and animals as well. The
open burning of these toxins pollutes the atmosphere and can result into the depletion of ozone
layer. Therefore, it has become significant for everyone to spread awareness about the e waste
and adopt the recycling options to make the environment safer for all the living beings.
