St. Gianna Health Academy By: Randy Nguyen
ORIENTATION WEEK Orientation week was very interesting at most. The first time our class walked into the classroom I was surprised it wasn’t filled with nasty Bishop Carroll kids. When the Carroll kids arrived it was finally time to start and I realized that they were not bad at all. Over the week we had three people come talk to us about the hospital, hospital security, and hand washing projects. We got a tour of the hospitals, a TB shot, review of HIPPA laws, and familiarized with health academy rules. It was a great start to the semester.

Blog Week 4 - OR Randy Nguyen - Week 4 OR Posted by  Randy Nguyen at  Monday, September 27, 2010 1:00:25 PM CDT Week 4 rotations was my favorite department yet. It was very interesting and taught me a lot about surgery. When going in, I didn't know what to expect. As i walked through the door to the operating room, I was granted a weird and unexpecting scene of a uterus being pulled out of a patient. I was shocked but tried to look as professional as possible but on the inside, I was going crazy. During the same surgery, i got to see the Da Vinci machine at work. The next day, I saw two surgeries which included a catheter and a removal of a breast. It was really cool and I was surprised that i could handle surgery that well.
Blog Week 5 – 5West Randy-Week 5, 5West Posted by  randy Nguyen at  Thursday, September 30, 2010 2:10:49 PM CDT Week 5, I was at 5West at St. Joseph. 5West was just hospitalization usually for people with cardiac problems. Most of the patients were really old or obese but some were actually regular people. On the first day, all I really did was follow around nurses and watch them do questionnaires with patients. I got to help with a catheter and helped moved several patients as well. The second day was pretty boring and I didn't get to see very much action. In general, it was an alright rotation, not too great and not terrible. The nurses are really nice though!
Blog Week 6 – Labor/Delivery Week 6 Randy Nguyen Posted by  randy Nguyen at  Thursday, October 7, 2010 12:45:36 PM CDT I was in Labor and Delivery during week six. When i got there, no one really talked to me until a nurse asked me if i wanted to watch a vaginal birth. I said yes but she called and asked the patient first and they said that they weren't comfortable with me watching since i was a male. So as they were delivering, i was sitting in the front office being  really bored. Right after they got done delivering, my nurse had to go help another delivery and forgot all about me so i missed another birth. At the end of the day, i didn't get to see any deliveries and am really disappointed. I blame Brooke for getting my hopes up and then having them crushed. =)
Blog Week 7- MICU/CICU Blog Week 7 - MICU/CICU Posted by  randy Nguyen at  Monday, October 18, 2010 1:46:27 PM CDT During week 7, i was in the MICU/CICU. It wasn't very eventful when I first came in because everyone was going off to lunch. I was following around the charge nurse named Blair. We only had one patient to take care of so it was really boring. As I was leaving, I saw two more patients being admitted this made me very disappointed.
Blog Week 8 - Rehab Week 8 Randy Nguyen Posted by  randy Nguyen at  Thursday, October 21, 2010 2:14:29 PM CDT During week eight, i was put in Rehab (therapy). The first day was ok, I only got to see two patients. Most of the day was charting so some was kind of boring. The next day was really cool, i got to see a variety of different patients and had very interesting experiences with them. It seemed like every patient was worse than the one before so it was pretty sad. Overall Rehab was great, I am seriously considering becoming a Physical Therapist now.
Hand Washing Presentations Overview Clark Elementary Clark Elementary was really cool. Our group was very nervous because it was our first time presenting. Overall, it turned out very well and the group pulled really connected. Tops Cloud Elementary was very interesting at best. I did not know what to expect of our presentation, but in the end, it turned out great. We only did two presentations and they were both really good. All Saint I really enjoyed going to All Saints because it was my old elementary & middle school. It was really nice to see all of my old teachers and present to fellow cougars. Our presentations went great but we only presented one time. Seas Going to Seas was very cool. I never got to see the inside of it so I was very interested. Our presentations went great and we presented to a group of 75 without one of our MVPs. Our group really connected and finally perfected our presentations.
Presentations Overall Overall Presentations were great. They let Kapaun and Carroll kids bond more and demonstrated teamwork. The only downside was that I was called Germy after every presentation and the kids kept asking if I really sneezed in my hand. In the end, Purple team was the best out of every other group.
