St. Gianna Health Academy By: Jack Klenda
Orientation Week The first week of Health Academy I honestly had no idea what to expect. We had a lot of people come and talk to us. I felt overloaded at first but I knew that I would get used to the schedule.
Orientation Week cont. I remember being talked to a lot about HIPPA law. Mrs. Clark-Hang told us that we couldn’t talk about what we saw in the hospital outside of the classroom. She told us the story of a student who was kicked out of Health Academy a couple years ago for violating HIPPA. And then a police officer told us about the same information.
Orientation Week cont. We then began the touring of St. Francis. It seemed like a maze at first. I had no sense of direction inside the labyrinth of halls. Although by the end of the tour there did seem to be a pattern to it all.
Thank You Letters Every week after rotations we had to write a either a handmade personal thank you letter or a professionally written one.
Handwritten Thank You Letters During the course of Health Academy we thanked a lot of the units and individual speakers with handwritten thank you letters These were very fun to make and
Labor and Delivery Handwritten Thank You
TB test Handwritten Thank You
CCU Handwritten Thank You
Rehab Handwritten Thank You
ER Handwritten Thank You
Professional Thank You Letters Also we had to make 5 professional Thank You letters These were written in business letter profile
Respiratory Professional Thank You
PICU Professional Thank You
CICU Professional Thank You
BICU Professional Thank You
Lab Professional Thank You
Hand Washing Presentations Our first major assignment for Health Academy was to make Hand Washing Presentations for grades K-3 at some of the local Catholic schools. We were sectioned into groups of five and gave our presentations to the class as a test run.
Hand Washing Presentations cont. We went to Clarke Elementary, Saint Elizabeth Anne Seaton Catholic Grade School, All Saints Catholic Grade School, and Tops Elementary It was an interesting experience seeing which kids would be fooled by our Germ Light trick
Blogs! Every week after rotations we would blog about our experiences at the different units and comment on other people’s blogs.
PICU Blog My time in PICU Posted by  jack klenda at  Monday, November 8, 2010 1:57:45 PM CST I had heard from many students before that PICU wasn't a very exciting or engaging rotation. This was true to a point. There wasn't a whole lot to do and the nurses explained to me just about every patient in the first twenty minutes i was there. But what was fun was to listen to the nurses make fun  one nurse in particular. They tricked her into calling a liquor store and asking for Keith Stone. Apparently she didn't understand and called back twice more before they finally told her she had been tricked.
BICU Blog My time in the Burn Unit Posted by  jack klenda at  Monday, November 8, 2010 2:13:00 PM CST Burn Unit was pretty interesting. The first day I mostly watched a guy who had inhaled anhydrous and had been on a bed unconscious for about ten days before i got there. The next day I got to see a surgery. A roofer had accidentally hit his head on a power line and the electricity went in his head and out his hands. He had to get skin grafted on his head and hands. It was really cool to watch.
OR SFC Blog my time in or again Posted by  jack klenda at  Thursday, October 21, 2010 1:00:03 PM CDT This week i was in the or at st. francis. On the first day i went in and saw a lymphectomy and breast cancer removal. It was really interesting because there was alot of radiology involved and that was what my paper was over. The surgical staff was very nice and let me view as much as they could. One surgeon told me some very intersting stories about his tours in Vietnam. This was probabley my favorite rotation so far.
Labor and Delivery Blog my time in lad Posted by  jack klenda at  Thursday, September 16, 2010 2:41:48 PM CDT So i was in the new life/ labor and delivery unit at sjc. The first day i saw one baby being born. The mother had her whole family in the room and they all took pictures of the baby with cell phones the moment after it was weighed. The neonatologist came in and sucked all the fluid out of the baby's lungs with a suction instrument. He wasn't very gentle and that surprised me a little. I'd always been told that when i saw birth for the first time I would be very emotionally affected. In all honesty it wasn't some ground shaking moment. It was very cool and all but the nurse i was with was telling me stuff about birth so I was trying to listen to her. All in all if you haven't been to this unit yet pray there's alot going on that day or bring some homework.
Respiratory Blog my time in rehab Posted by  jack klenda at  Thursday, September 30, 2010 12:37:14 PM CDT My first day in rehab was alot more interesting than most people made it out to be. I followed a pt(physical therapist) and an occupational therapist(ot) around. First we saw this 80 year old asian lady who couldn't speak english therefore required a translator. I got a real good view of true Vietnamese and i realized that i couldn't ever be able to speak that language. The second patient had emphazema. His skin was filled with air pockets and was crackley to the touch. On the second day we went to the dementia ward. It was pretty creepy, and i didn't feel comfortable. The last patient was a dude who had abdominal surgery and couldn't walk very well.
