Grace Lewis completed a 14-week clinical rotation program at various medical facilities. She gained exposure to different units and specialties, including the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Radiology, the Lab, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), General Surgery, Operating Room, Emergency Room, Respiratory Therapy, and more. Her favorite rotations were NICU and Operating Room, and she hopes to pursue a career as a Neonatologist or OR nurse.

2. Orientation Week The first week was full of a lot of new information. We learned about: HIPPA Laws Security Rotations Each other What was expected of us

3. Rotations Week 1 Week one I was in SICU at St. Francis Hospital. The SICU is the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. In this unit I followed the same nurse for both days and learned what charting was, watched patients, and learned how “intense” the unit actually was. In the end, I decided this was not a unit for me.

5. Radiology Week 2 My second week I was in Radiology. I did really love this unit. I was at St. Joseph's and found that I liked it a lot better than St. Francis. I had a lot of fun and the nurses were so nice, from this unit I decided that I might look into this as a career option.

6. Lab Week 3 In the Lab I had a great nurse that I followed! Her name was Tu and she was so kind and I followed her all day and we took patients blood from all around the hospital. The second day I stayed in the lab and they taught me what all the machines in there do. This job was fun for the two days but as a career I don’t believe it was for me. There is too much Chemistry involved.

8. NICU Week 4 I fell in love with NICU at St. Joseph's campus. I loved all my nurses and being with the babies was really a life changing experience. It was amazing how little they were yet, how strong they were fighting for their life. It was absolutely amazing. This unit I did my research paper over and hope to pursue a career as a Neonatologist. It was truly a life changing experience.

10. Week 5 General Surgery For week 5 I was in general surgery. I learned very little and the floor was slow. The job of the nurses was to check on patients and distribute medications. The floor only had a few patients and the nurses had very little for me to watch. So I was able to go around with my mother in Labor and Delivery.

12. Week 6 This week I was in the OR and I loved it! I got to see two surgeries and even dressed in scrubs—which always makes one feel professional. I learned a lot and got be right there when the surgeries were taking place, I really did love this rotation.

13. Week 7 This week I was in 5E. It was not the most fascinating I helped a nurse put together “go home packets” which was nice. The floor was just like general surgery—not much went on and the patients were there to wait to be able to go home. I would never choose to work on this floor.

14. Week 8 Labor and Delivery was extremely slow and I was given the opportunity to shadow my mom. I got to watch how mothers and their new babies worked with each other in the first days of meeting one another. It was amazing and a very beautiful experience. I learned in this unit that loving your job is most important above all else.

15. Week 9 Cardiac Unit was absolutely fascinating. It was a high intensity unit and not a lot went on but the patients were so fun to learn about and I really did love the nurses I followed. They were helpful and insightful.

16. Week 10 This week I followed around a physical therapist. I absolutely loved it! This rotation was a real eye opener and I really liked how the Physical Therapist’s saw a wide variety of patients and had very important roles in all of their recoveries.

18. Week 11 This week I was in the ER. I loved it! I was able to stand in on a Code Blue and able to see so much of how the unit works in a true emergency situation. I loved this unit and now consider it as a potential career option.

19. Week 12 This week I was in Respiratory therapy it was extremely interesting yet, repetitive. I did enjoy that I go to go around the hospital a lot and I did learn so much. The nurses I followed were very helpful.

20. Week 13 This week I was in the OR at St. Francis. I got to see so much and the nurses were so nice. I was able to watch two by-pass surgeries, a skin graph, and a gal bladder be removed. It was such an amazing experience. This week I felt so truly blessed to be part of this program.

21. Week 14 This week I was in PICU. This unit was not that exciting. The nurses were fun to talk to but there was only three patients. One of the patients was being released, the other was going to surgery, and the other couldn’t have visitors.

25. Blogs 1 This week there wasn’t much required of me. I sat with the nurses and watched over patients that were extremely sick. It was a very depressing unit but at the same time very interesting. I feel like there was too much emotion there for me to ever want to work there.

26. Blogs 2 This week was awesome. It was all about being on your feet and really being ready for anything. I saw a vast majority of different people. I saw older people and extremely young children coming in for x-rays. The nurses were so nice and helpful I really did love this rotation.

27. Blogs 3 This week I went to the lab at St. Joe campus. The lab was full of information. I really liked the woman I worked with her name was Tu and she was very helpful and really let me get hands on when we were taking blood. She was so friendly and trusting. The second day was not as great. It was all just about learning the different types of machines. It was during this day I decided that working in the Lab was not for me. The work was extremely redundant. I suggest whoever does this rotation next...wear good shoes! You stand all day and Sperry's aren't the best for that!

28. Blogs 4 This week I was on rotation at the NICU at St. Joe. I loved it! I think I have found my future profession. It was so awesome being with all those babies and the nurses were some of the nicest that I’ve had so far. The nurses actually loved their jobs--which I was yet to see. I got to hold some babies and feed them. It was so nice and warm up there and so quiet. It was a great rotation. All the nurses are great and working with those babies is just all in all an awesome experience.

29. Blogs 5 For the first day I was in general surgery. General surgery was so boring so the next day I shadowed my mom around. I didn't necessarily like what my mom does--which is teaching new moms to breastfeed. What I did learn from this is that there is a job out there for everyone. My mom loves her job and it really made me want to aspire into what I want to be because the way she interacted with her patients and how excited she got when she got a patient was just awesome. From this week I learned that the extra work is worth doing to have a job that I really do love and enjoy.
