Exercise 6 WHAT DO YOU DO TO SAVE THE WOLRD
Some articles and readings with exercise
related with the natural disaster.
World prepares to save energy for an hour
Millions of buildings around the globe will be dark for an hour on Saturday, March 28 as
the third Earth Hour takes place. The event is organized by the World Wildlife Fund. It
started in 2007 as a way of drawing attention to the dangers of climate change. The Earth
Hour website says: “For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and
background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your
lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming.” Organizers hope
11. their message will reach a billion people. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Earth
Hour promises to be “the largest demonstration of public concern about climate change
ever attempted”.
Not everyone agrees that Earth Hour will help. Many see it as being too little, too late and
that not much will change when the lights are switched back on. Climate campaigner Clive
Hamilton says: "We are well past the time for feel-good exercises aimed at raising
awareness… It's like the band playing on as the Titanic sinks.” He says the event is risky
because the next morning people will think the climate has recovered a little. "Symbolism
is powerful if it leads to action, but dangerous if it substitutes for it," he says.
Environmentalist Mark Alexander-Warne agrees. He stresses the need to reduce our daily
energy consumption, rather than simply “sitting around in the dark” for an hour.

Burping cows and sheep harm the environment
Scientists are making cows and sheep scapegoats for a small part of global warming.
There are new reports that methane gas produced from the animals burping and flatulence
could be more hazardous to the environment than four-wheel-drive cars. Experts claim
cows are responsible for about three per cent of Britain's greenhouse gases. Michael
Abberton of the Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research said the average cow
or bull belches out about 100 to 200 litres of methane each day, a lot more damaging than
the carbon emitted by gas guzzling cars. Methane emissions from cattle account for a
quarter of the gas in our air. In Britain, cows and sheep are the biggest single source of
methane - a gas that is 23 times more harmful than carbon dioxide when it comes to
global warming.
The race is now on to reduce burping and farting in cows and sheep. If scientists can
achieve this, it could help Britain reach its commitments under the Kyoto agreement.
Researchers are trying to find a new way to feed cattle and sheep which leads to less gas
being produced. The key seems to be in developing new types of food that are easier for
farm animals to digest. Scientists in Wales believe putting garlic in their food could reduce
the impact on global warming by cutting the amount of gas produced by up to 50 per cent.
Project leader Professor Jamie Newbold said: "Garlic directly attacks the organisms in the
gut that produce methane." He is conducting tests to see if the garlic gives the animals
bad breath or, more specifically, if it lead to garlic flavoured milk and meat.

Human noise pollution a danger to sea life
Human-made noise pollution in the Earth’s oceans and seas is becoming a serious threat
to marine wildlife. Scientists report that there is hardly an underwater place left where
marine mammals can live in peace and quiet. Dozens of species of whale, dolphin, turtle
and other creatures rely on sound to communicate, find mates and hunt for food. Their
increasingly noisy environment is making it more and more difficult to lead a normal life.
This is according to a report from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), called
"Ocean Noise: Turn it Down”. The environmental group says noise from shipping, military
sonar, oil and gas surveys, offshore construction and marine sports has reached
dangerous levels for sea life.
16. The IFAW says the distance over which blue whales can communicate is down by 90 per
cent. It also reports that in the past decade, many whales have become beached after
being disorientated because of loud noise. The group also warns that noise pollution is
only going to get worse. It highlighted the use of seismic surveys as one example of the
extent of the problem. These generate incredibly loud sounds every ten seconds that can
travel 3,000 km. There are 90 survey ships active in the oceans today. In addition, the
number of ships sailing the seas will double by 2025. Mark Simmonds, a conservation
spokesman, said, "man-made noise is already triggering a kind of acoustic fog,” and called
for a “response to noise pollution in the underwater world”.

Vacations that have made a difference…….
Animal SOS! Did you know that there more than 5,0000
endangered animal species in the world today and least one
species dies out every year? Well, these three people
decided to do something about it! They’ve all recently been
on a working vacation to help an endangered species. They
told us all about their experiences……
Pink River Dolphin
Hayley has just spent three months on a floating
House boat in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil.
“I wasPart of an observation team doing research,
and it was amazing!” she says. “Every year, we lose about 10% of these
clever creatures. They swim in polluted waters and sometimes get caught
fishermen’s nets. There are more than 300 dolphins here and we had
to record new births and monitor the babies. In the evenings, we sat on
the porch and listened to the sounds of the jungle.
Then we went to sleep in hammocks! It was so relaxing!”
Cross River Gorilla
Ryan has just spent 6 months ina tent tracking these gorillas in the
rainforests of Cameroon after saw a documentary about them. He says,
20. “ I was very shocked when I heard there are only 300 of these gorillas left
because of hunting and deforestation that has destroyed their habitat.
Every we walked for miles up steep slopes in the rainforest. Our guide was a
poacher in the past who hunted the gorillas for their meat! I was so excited
when we saw our first gorilla. We recorded lots of information about
its location and activities. We also talked to locals and suggested
alternatives to cutting down forests for farming. This was the most
interesting- and challenging- experience of my life.
Loggerhead Sea Turtle
Mary has just come back from the Greek island of Zakynthos after helping with a turtle
conversation Project there. She says “ Every summer, thousands of females lay their eggs in
the sand on the beach. The problem is that tourists often damage their nests by accident.
They also leave garbage like plastic bags that the turtles mistake for food. Every day at dawn,
our team did a survey of nets and eggs. It was tiring but we saw some spectacular sunrises!
During the day, we patrolled the beach and told tourist all about the turtles. I’ve already told
my friends that I’m going back next year- and that they’re coming with me!”

his message: We must protect our
world. He is a great example to others
because he has walked through thirty-nine
different nations on his quest to plant
trees, raise awareness, and protect the Earth. This is how he has
earned the name Earthwalker.
Paul left school when he was only fifteen. He became concerned
about the planet when he saw things like pollution, deforestation,
and how the natural landscape has already been ruined in many
countries. His adventure began in 19990 when he gave up his job in
Canada to walk to South America. Since then, Paul has visited many

Since life first appeared on the Earth four billion years
ago, there have been tremendous changes. Ice ages
have come and gone and volcanoes have erupted.
Earthquake have shattered ancient bet mountains and
changed the course of rivers. Some species have been
displaced by others which are more favoured by new
environments. Nowadays scientists are studying the
changes which are likely to take place in 50 years’time.
Here are some of them:
27. B_____________________________________
A rapidly increasing population is one of the causes
of social and environment problems.
The population growth brings the problem of
consumption. If we cannot feed 6 billion people
today, how will we satisfy the needs of 8 billion
people or more by 2030? Global food shortages will
become much more serious than today, leading to
poverty.
C__________________________________________
Renewable energy technologies are now ready to be
used and will meet the world’s energy demand by 2030.
We will find new energy sources like wind and solar
power that won’t pollute and will never run out. They
are also less expensive compared to other sources of
energy.

EARTH SONG
Michael Jackson
What about sunrise
What about rain
What about all the things
That you said we were to gain...
What about killing fields
Is there a time
What about all the things
That you said were yours and mine
Did you ever stop to notice
44. All the blood we've shed before
Did you ever stop to notice
This crying Earth, these weeping shores?
Chorus:
AaaaaaaaaahOooooooooh
AaaaaaaaaahOooooooooh
What have we done to the world
Look what we've done
What about about all the peace
That you pledge your only son...
What about flowering fields
Is there a time
What about all the dreams
That you said was yours and mine
Did you ever stop to notice
All the children dead from war
Did you ever stop to notice
This crying earth, these weeping shores?
Chorus
I used to dream
I used to glance beyond the stars
Now I don't know where we are
Although I know we've drifted far
Chorus
45. Hey, what about yesterday
(What about us)
What about the seas
(What about us)
The heavens are falling down
(What about us)
I can't even breathe
(What about us)
What about the bleeding Earth

(Oooh, oooh)
Burnt despite our pleas
(What about us)
What about the holy land
(What about it)
Torn apart by creed
(What about us)
What about the common man
(What about us)
Can't we set him free
(What about us)
What about children dying
(What about us)

(Oooh, oooh)
Someone tell me why
(What about us)

Chorus
There's A Place In Your Heart
HEAL THE WORLD
And I Know That It Is Love
And This Place Could Be Much Brighter Than Tomorrow
And If You Really Try
You'll Find There's No Need To Cry
In This Place You'll Feel
There's No Hurt Or Sorrow
There Are Ways To Get There
If You Care Enough For The Living
Make A Little Space
Make A Better Place...
Heal The World
Make It A Better Place
For You And For Me
And The Entire Human Race
There Are People Dying
If You Care Enough
For The Living
48. Make A Better Place
For You And For Me
If You Want To Know Why
There's A Love That
Cannot Lie
Love Is Strong
It Only Cares For
Joyful Giving
If We Try
We Shall See
In This Bliss
We Cannot Feel
Fear Or Dread
We Stop Existing And
Start Living
Then It Feels That Always
Love's Enough For
Us Growing
So Make A Better World
Make A Better World...
Heal The World
Make It A Better Place
For You And For Me
And The Entire Human Race
There Are People Dying
49. If You Care Enough
For The Living
Make A Better Place
For You And For Me
And The Dream We Were
Conceived In
Will Reveal A Joyful Face
And The World We
Once Believed In
Will Shine Again In Grace
Then Why Do We Keep
Strangling Life
Wound This Earth
Crucify Its Soul
Though It's Plain To See
This World Is Heavenly
Be God's Glow
We Could Fly So High
Let Our Spirits Never Die
In My Heart I Feel You Are All
My Brothers Create A World With No Fear
Together We'll Cry Happy Tears
See The Nations Turn Their Swords Into Plowshares
We Could Really Get There
If You Cared Enough
For The Living
