ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT
FOR THE PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION OF A SHOPPING
MALL
IN MARAWI CITY

Introduction
 Building a shopping mall in Marawi City is the first and one of a kind. For sure, it
will blossom bigger. With the mall culture we have nowadays, no wonder mall
has become big business, as they have large number of shops selling various
products and services.
 It will be advantageous because the shops are housed in a complex. Groceries,
clothes, shoes, reading material, food courts, cinemas and entertainment are
available in one place. Anyone can spend a whole day at the mall, shop, dine,
watch a movie or play games. They are great meeting places for friends to catch
up over coffee or a meal in the food court. Families who decide to visit a
shopping mall in the weekend or on a holiday for a family outing is because it is a
more convenient option especially because parking is provided.

Preparatory Works
 Background
 SM Company Inc. wishes to construct SM Marawi Mall in Basak Malutlut, Marawi City. This land
is a former rice fields and owned by different families but willing to lease their land for the
development of a mall.
 This will provide services such as banking, retail, restaurants and fast food centers. For sure, this
will make easier for people looking for relaxing and enjoyable ambience as they access those
services
 Intends to cater the people of Lanao del Sur as well as those that visit or pass through the town.
 Banggolo and Padian is already jammed and crowded
 Diversion is needed to lessen the concentration (increase in population and economic activity)
 Mall construction will give ways to road construction that will lessen traffic in the national road of
Marawi City.
Location
 Marawi City, is the capital city of the province of Lanao
del Sur on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines.
 The people of Marawi are called the Maranaos and
speak the Maranao language.
 They are named after Lake Lanao, which is called
Meranau in the language, upon whose shores Marawi
City lies.
 The city is also called the Summer Capital of the South
because of its higher elevation and cooler climate,
Marawi City Economy
 The economy of Marawi City is largely based on agriculture, trading and
exporting. Most industries in the city are agriculture-oriented. They include rice
and corn farming, hollow blocks manufacturing, goldsmithing, and saw milling.
Small and cottage-size enterprises are engaged in garment making, mat and
malong weaving, wood carving, brassware making, web development, and
blacksmithing.[5]
 Apart from that, Marawi City is home to NPC - Agus 1 Hydro Electric Power Plant
and the first of the six cascading Agus Hydro Power Plants.

ensuring proper measures for the management of construction waste
 No temporary bulk storage of fuels on site
 Construction materials shall be sourced, stored and used well
 Drainage system must be planned well.

 During Operation
 The developer will responsible for and finance road improvements in order to
maintain/create free flow of traffic
 Ensure that pollution of water does not occur and waste water be directed to right channels

  • 1. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT FOR THE PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION OF A SHOPPING MALL IN MARAWI CITY INTESAR T. ABA-CONDING
  • 2. Introduction  Building a shopping mall in Marawi City is the first and one of a kind. For sure, it will blossom bigger. With the mall culture we have nowadays, no wonder mall has become big business, as they have large number of shops selling various products and services.  It will be advantageous because the shops are housed in a complex. Groceries, clothes, shoes, reading material, food courts, cinemas and entertainment are available in one place. Anyone can spend a whole day at the mall, shop, dine, watch a movie or play games. They are great meeting places for friends to catch up over coffee or a meal in the food court. Families who decide to visit a shopping mall in the weekend or on a holiday for a family outing is because it is a more convenient option especially because parking is provided.

  • 4. Preparatory Works  Background  SM Company Inc. wishes to construct SM Marawi Mall in Basak Malutlut, Marawi City. This land is a former rice fields and owned by different families but willing to lease their land for the development of a mall.  This will provide services such as banking, retail, restaurants and fast food centers. For sure, this will make easier for people looking for relaxing and enjoyable ambience as they access those services  Intends to cater the people of Lanao del Sur as well as those that visit or pass through the town.  Banggolo and Padian is already jammed and crowded  Diversion is needed to lessen the concentration (increase in population and economic activity)  Mall construction will give ways to road construction that will lessen traffic in the national road of Marawi City.

Location  Marawi City, is the capital city of the province of Lanao del Sur on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines.  The people of Marawi are called the Maranaos and speak the Maranao language.  They are named after Lake Lanao, which is called Meranau in the language, upon whose shores Marawi City lies.  The city is also called the Summer Capital of the South because of its higher elevation and cooler climate,
  • 6. Marawi City Economy  The economy of Marawi City is largely based on agriculture, trading and exporting. Most industries in the city are agriculture-oriented. They include rice and corn farming, hollow blocks manufacturing, goldsmithing, and saw milling. Small and cottage-size enterprises are engaged in garment making, mat and malong weaving, wood carving, brassware making, web development, and blacksmithing.[5]  Apart from that, Marawi City is home to NPC - Agus 1 Hydro Electric Power Plant and the first of the six cascading Agus Hydro Power Plants.
