Efficient Resource Management through

Introduction
• All the stakeholders in the agriculture
production system need information about
different phases of production to marketing.
• Pluralistic information flows between
farmers and providers of agricultural
information often experience weak linkages.

• These have caused major “bottlenecks” in
national agricultural technology systems and
limiting their effectiveness in contributing to
agricultural development’ (Kiplang’at, 2003).
• Collecting and disseminating information is
often difficult and costly.

Key strengths of ICT
New range of additional media that can be part
of the communication
These new media have features that enable
sharing of information on needs and local
knowledge
Can increase efficiency in use of development
resources
Can result in less duplication of activities
Tend to reduce communication costs

 Rapid speed of communication – locally, nationally
and globally.
 Access to Information resources of the whole world,
beyond state and national boundaries (improved
reach).
 Instant access to the important resources –people
and literature. Extension journals, newsletters (less
time).
 Facilitates two-way communication –e-mails, Chat
Groups, discussion forums.
 Easy documentation as all the communication is in
digital form.

Key Weaknesses
Can lead to technological dependence
Capital cost of technologies, and cost of
ongoing access and support, can be high
Inherent need for capacity-building
Lack of accessible telecommunications
infrastructure in many rural and remote areas
