Carlos Alberto Farías Fernández reflects on his communication skills and how to improve as a leader. He identifies that he tends to dominate conversations and needs to improve active listening. He can also get distracted and should use more non-verbal cues like gestures. His stubbornness can discourage group participation. While his direct communication style achieves results, it is not equally attentive to all teammates. Factors like his extraversion and past leadership roles influence his communication. To improve, he aims to guide rather than impose conversations to seem more approachable and develop stronger communication skills as a leader.

2. Questions for reflection:
a. What positive behaviors could you identify in the way you communicate?
The behaviors I have when I communicate myself are; bringing the every conversation to a
familiar ground. I tend to be impositive in the ideas and topics because I like to own the
conversation. In terms of non-verbal communication I use but don’t mostly rely on facial
expressions. and hand gestures. I believe I posess the ability to actively listen my peers and
the synthetizing of ideas comes naturaly. I tend to be both empathetic yet objective.
b. What behaviors of yours do you feel need improving?
I would definetly go ahead and change my impositive style of conversation. Also I do get
distracted in my phone or other people that come and say hello interrupting a conversation.
I would love to use more my hands and facial gestures and I would definetly would like to
learn how to modulate my voice. I’d like to learn how to read the bodylanguage of people in
order to interact better and let them talk.
c. How do you think your way of communicating affects people and results?
In group situations I tend to be stubborn and that stuborness ends up difficulting the group
participation and probably it shys away a couple ideas thrown at the conversation. I do
believe my straight get to the point style helps achieve results earlier due to the drive I inject
to the conversation bringing cohesion to the team. Apart from the impositive si my way of
communication is equal for every teammate in time and attention span. Also when I
procrastinate I tend to slow the teams progress.
d. What factors do you think influence the way you communicate with others?
My personality a little bit extraverted, talkative, egocentric. I feel responsibility to speak when
the team or the audience doesn’t participate. Definetly there is an influence of my past
experiences such as playing sports and performing a leadership role and also the
relationship wit my family, being the youngest in my nuclear family.
e. What conclusions can you make based on these observations that will allow you to
improve your communication as a leader, both in the work environment and in your
personal environment?
It is very important to guide the conversation instead of impose it.
I want to perceive approachable and today I am not as approachable as I’d like.
The communication skills are intrinsic of a good leader.
