• 5G is the new, fifth generation technology standard for mobile telephone networks, providing
even faster broadband connectivity.
• Deployments began in 2019. It is the planned successor to the 4G networks.
• 5G was created based on the recommendations and specifications of the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU) called IMT-2020. (3G was developed on the basis of IMT-2000 and
4G on the basis of IMT-Advanced recommendations.).
• Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is an organization that has been translating the
recommendations and specifications into standards and technology, as it did with 3G and 4G (LTE).
• Despite the large number of new functions, structural differences and new technological
solutions, 5G technology is essentially an evolution of 4G. It will be deployed in many different
architectural models, which are expected to change over time as the market adapts

collect and process a large
amount of data.
• Connecting body-worn cameras
and cameras in police cars to
command centres to identify
what is happening at an incident
and to gain an overview of the
situation as it unfolds.
• Situational Awareness: mMTC
can provide penetration for
hundreds of thousands of
devices per square kilometre
allowing Command and
Control systems to monitor an
almost unlimited number of
different sensors.

Video Surveillance and
Analytics: In addition to
cameras hosted in and around
emergency services vehicles,
cameras can also operate on
remotely controlled drones or
unmanned vehicles for a
better awareness of urgent
situations occurring in areas
that human beings cannot
easily access.
Remote Control and Monitoring:
With the introduction of 5G NR,
ultra-reliable and low-latency
communications, new appli-
cations will pave the way to
assisted driving and fully
unmanned automated vehicles
and keep the network reliable
when multiple remote-control
applications coexist in the same
location.

reality (AR) content overlay, typically
mapping information to firemen
glasses (in combination with
drones); AR can also improve how
firefighters can see in smoke-filled
zero-visibility environment.

When:
• ~ 2020 first
standards
• ~ 2021 first release
equipment
• ~ 2025 commercial
deployments
Wait??
• NO!
• 4G MCX standards are complete & are being implemented
• When you needed a computer did you wait for the next
generation??
• Narrowband (TETRA, etc.) & 4G broadband will be the de-facto
standards for PPDR for decades
• MC-X standards will naturally feed forward into 5G together with
new applications as yet only imagined…
It may not be here tomorrow, but there’s little doubt that 5G is the long term future.

It is the planned successor to the 4G networks. • 5G was created based on the recommendations and specifications of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) called IMT-2020. (3G was developed on the basis of IMT-2000 and 4G on the basis of IMT-Advanced recommendations.). • Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is an organization that has been translating the recommendations and specifications into standards and technology, as it did with 3G and 4G (LTE). • Despite the large number of new functions, structural differences and new technological solutions, 5G technology is essentially an evolution of 4G. It will be deployed in many different architectural models, which are expected to change over time as the market adapts What is 5G?

When: • ~ 2020 first standards • ~ 2021 first release equipment • ~ 2025 commercial deployments Wait?? • NO! • 4G MCX standards are complete & are being implemented • When you needed a computer did you wait for the next generation?? • Narrowband (TETRA, etc.) & 4G broadband will be the de-facto standards for PPDR for decades • MC-X standards will naturally feed forward into 5G together with new applications as yet only imagined… It may not be here tomorrow, but there’s little doubt that 5G is the long term future.
