Edvard Grieg was one of several Scandinavian composers who were commissioned to write a
commemorative piece for the bicentennial celebration of the birth of the "Molière of the North," the
Norwegian writer Ludvig Baron Holberg (1684–1754). Grieg called his set of short piano pieces
From Holberg's Time and gave his first performance of the piano work in Bergen, Norway in

world ever since it was created in 1893. This portrait is of a man who is screaming as he is in a
potentially disastrous situation. Although he faces disaster, beauty can still be found in the life that
he is has lived or is currently living. On the other hand, Alice Walker also shares a story of her
disaster in "Beauty: When the Other Dancer Is the Self." Walker got her eye shout out by a BB gun
and it changed her life forever. Although at first she thought a life of experiencing beauty was
impossible, she realized how beautiful the idea of living truly is and how grateful she is to be alive.
As shown in "The Scream" and in Alice Walker's story, when disaster strikes, there is always hope to
find beauty in the world whether it is in the past, future, or present because of how beautiful life
itself can truly be.
First off, "The Scream" is a portrait of a man who seems to be really scared to the point where he is
screaming. He is placing his hands on the side of his face in a terrified manner. This man has no hair
or even facial features for that matter. It is hard to assume his age because of his lack of facial
features, but it seems that he might be of young age, at twenty years old or so. His face looks like
that of an alien, with nothing but a bald head and plain face, featuring just his eyes, nose and his

Appropriately titled "The Shining," it plays off of Munch's work created in 1893, although
containing a very different subject matter. Munch's piece captures raw emotion and immediately
demands attention. The use of contrasting lines in this work form a unique composition, each one
having a specific purpose. For example, the curvilinear lines in the sky mimic those of the main
figure, while the straight lines in the bridge compliment those of the figures in the background. The
harsh line formed by the bridge breaks up the image and allows the audience to make sense of the
forms. Furthermore, Munch uses color to delineate space and create a scene filled with despair. The
color scheme in this image is mainly blues and oranges – adding further contrast to the work by

As I created "The Shining" using micron pens and watercolor rather than a thick, opaque medium,
the overall composition is very different. Depicted in the scene is Wendy and Jack Torrance from
The Shining, one of my all time favorite movies. Similar to "The Scream," this piece contains a
contrast in color, although both the warm and cool tones are much more muted. The use of diluted
watercolor throughout the painting in contrast with black ink illustrates the eerie mood seen

The late Romantic Era (~1790–1910) was a time for experimentation. The individual composers,
starting with Beethoven, moved away from the technical form of the baroque and classical periods.

In 1908, Munch had a nervous breakdown, a culmination of his anxiety and fears going all the way
back to his childhood. During the years pervious to this he had experienced some of the most
extreme emotions humans can. At age 5, his mother died and at 14 , his favorite sister, Sophie dies

makes me feel the true emotion Edvard is feeling. At first, I see the dark dull colours in the gloomy
scenery but then I can look past that and see such a warm fiery red–orange sky. I love the details in
this panting from the people in the background to the organic strokes of the paintbrush exhibiting a

My composer's name is Edvard Grieg. He was born on June 15, 1843 and he died on September 4,
1907 at the age of 64. He was born in Bergen, Norway and died in Bergen, Norway. He was
homeschooled at Tanks School when he was young. He then went to the school of Leipzig
Conservatory when he got older. He later went to college at Oxford University. His mom started to
give him piano lessons when he was 6. He played the piano and the organ his whole life.
Edvard's mom was Gesine Hagerup and his dad was Alexander Grieg. He had three brothers named
John, Maren, and Ingeborg Benedicte. He also had one sister named Elisabeth. Later in his life he
married his cousin Nina Hagerup. His wife then had a daughter named Alexandra Grieg. Edvard's
mom played the piano and that was why he always had a passion for piano. On Edvard's funeral day
over 40,000 people came to his funeral in honor of him.
In Edvard's teens he almost died of a life threatening lung disease. The disease caused him to have
one lung the rest of his life. But in his 60's the disease came back and killed him. In 2016, Edvard
was nominated for the Grammy Award for the best classical instrument solo. Edvard would mainly
compose songs with other people like his friends. But sometimes he would compose his own songs.
He mainly would write a symphony and a piano sonata. But he did write three violin sonatas and

His works of art are both terrifying and mesmerizing. In the film Edvard Munch, director Peter
Watkins does an excellent job at showing the life of Munch as if it was Munch telling his life. The
film is a mixture of documentary and a drama about Munch's life, and how his torments were
reflected in his art.
The film has a very grey and cold tone throughout its run. It definitely helps set the mood of
Kristiania (Oslo), Norway where Munch grew up. The film's depiction of Munch was that of a very
shy, and reserved young man, in fact he hardly ever spoke. It also portrayed him as a sort of outcast
in his family, as his father was a doctor, and his other siblings were also aspiring to be doctors.
During this time, we can see that Munch's early studies of his family always showed the side of
people's faces. There was no eye contact. In the film it not only shows those paintings, but it also
