The Scream is the title of
several paintings by the
Norwegian Edvard Munch.
The most famous version
is in the National Gallery in
Oslo but there are two
other versions of the
painting that are in the
Munch Museum, also in
Oslo, and the fourth
version belongs to a
private collection.
The theme represented in El Grito is strange, it is a
figure that is crossing a bridge, where, as we can see
in the background, there are also other characters in
an attitude of walking. But this figure has seen
something that frightens him, that makes him raise
his hands to his head and open his mouth to express
his anger, pain, inability or whatever, hence the title
of the painting. The stage is a bridge from which you
can see a view of the city of Oslo that would appear
in the background of the work completely blurred.
Characteristics of the painting "The Scream
• Image distortion
• Intense colors that contrast with other duller
ones
• Wavy and straight lines (Search for contrast)
• Expression of the author's personal fear (in the
face of an increasingly complex and diffuse
society)
• Three vertical lines divide the work
• A diagonal crosses the box from the far left
• Horizontal line dividing the box
Edward Münch
• Expressive and creative use of
line and color
• Strong expressiveness of the
faces and the attitude of the
figures
• Forerunner of expressionism
• Illness, death and pain are
frequent motifs in his work (due
to his unhappy childhood)
