Educational Technology ToolboxValuable tools for educators
Tech ToolsAs I progress through my study of the field of education I have been prepared with different strategies and pedagogies, but what about incorporating technology into my classroom. This is an important element to focus on as students become more and more “tech” savvy on their own.As an educator it is important to use this natural interest in technology to drive student interest
Google the Tool PowerhouseGoogle is a tech tool powerhouse, their software programs are free to users and easy to use. Many educators have become aware of their tools. I have had opportunity to use some of them and observe others
Google EarthGoogle is a 3D computer simulated earth that enables observes to see the world in massive detail and scaleThe observer can go from earth, to hemisphere, to continent, to country, region, and on down to viewing a single home. This tool is an excellent starter and interest grabber for students
Google earthI have used Google earth to introduce a unit on geography for a 7th grade geography unitThis was an excellent tool for that use since Google earth allows you to change the angle of view to share areas of elevation such as Mt. Everest, the Grand Canyon, and other interesting features of earth.
Google DocsGoogle Docs is free and easy to use software set of office tools. These tools mimic those of Microsoft corp.’s own office suit. The advantage of Google Docs is that all documents that are created can be saved to the online server and accessed through any internet connected computer
Cooperative Learning and Google DocsOne of the key features of Google docs is its ability to allow you to share your document with other users and collaborate via real time on the same document from different computers. This enables students to work together on the same project on their own time and together at the same time
My use of Google DocsI have used Google docs in my own course work but I have also shared the features of this powerful tool with my students so that they could use it to complete a physics project. In the project students were not allowed to communicate in person so this Google docs feature enabled them to communicate and work collaboratively
Discovery Education (united streaming)The Discovery education website is a great tool for videos of all sorts.I used this tool to show episodes of the Discovery channel show mythbusters. The videos can be downloaded to avoid streaming errors and are always ready to go for viewing. The ability to show a video from a popular show on demand enables me to generate interest and to push engaged minds on to the science involved.
YouTubeThe birth of YouTube has been an interesting development for educators. Since anyone can post videos to YouTube many great educational videos are availableYouTube is easy to use, just search and choose from multiple hits. I have encouraged my students to use videos as “plus 5’s” for my class so it has become very valuable tool for me.
BYOJeopardyWolfescience.org provides free access to a great educational tool to build interactive jeopardy games.I have used these several times to review for a test and generate interest and to get students learning in different waysMy jeopardy games are stored on the website and can be found at www.wolfescience.org/byojepardy followed by a search of my user name: alexd309
SMART board and applicationsThe SMART board is an amazing tool that has exploded on the scene of schools. The giant touch screen is interactive and enables teachers to move away from the computer to control the computer. Hundreds of applications are available for the SMART board, however my work with the SMART board has been on a very surface level
SMART BoardI have used the SMART board to have student fill in blanks on pictures, to label diagrams, to complete problems, to choose jeopardy questions. As well drive PowerPoint slideshows and control students video choices for “plus 5’s”
ConclusionAs technology become more accessible for teachers and students we must continue and learn about these new tools. My current understanding and use of these tools puts me ahead of the game in many instances and will help me to help my students succeed in my classAnd that is what it is all about: Student Success
