Title: Coping with stress
Specific objectives
At the end of the session students will be able to
 recognize the physical and psychological signs that they are experiencing with stress.
 Will be able to select and utilize appropriate strategies for managing the stress that they
experience.
Stress is a universal phenomenon commonly experienced by most people. It is often defined as a state
of emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances.
Stress affects the whole person across all dimensions viz. physical, emotional, intellectual, social and
spiritual. It comprises of three components: a stressor, perception of the event and the response.
Stressor is the life change or extra demand which is the root of the problem.
How an individual views the stressor and relates himself or herself to it is referred to as the perception
of the event.
Response is the way the body, behavior and thinking patterns change.
Coping includes efforts to control, reduce or tolerate the threats caused due to stress. There are three
basic types of coping skills to deal with stress –physical, mental and social.
Physical/behavioural coping skills involve taking care of oneself and staying as healthy as possible.
These coping skills involve strategies such as physical activity, yoga, stretching, healthy diet, adequate
rest and sleep and relaxation exercises.
 Physical activities
 Yoga and stretching:
 Diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat dairy, lean meat, limited salt, sugar and
saturated fats intake acts as a stress reducing agent.
 Having adequate rest and sleep
 Relaxation techniques
Cognitive/mental coping skills involve using thoughts and the mind constructively to counteract
negative effects of stress. These coping skills involve strategies such as following problem solving
techniques, reappraising the situation, time management, being assertive and expressing emotions
effectively etc.
Personal/social coping skills involve having social support networks, taking care of current
relationships, exploring and developing personal interests.
